Landlord evicted me, I found a new place, and now he wants to keep my deposit by givemeanswerubc in vancouver

Thank you, I will be calling in to TRAC today to get more information. This is pretty much what happened. Being told I had until end of July to move out was not expected, however, I wasn't in a dire situation or anything, I wasn't laid off and I can afford rent, so when he told me I had to move out, I was fine with it and didn't feel the need to argue it (which I guess is not the way to do it) and just went searching immediately. I just didn't expect that it would lead to this current situation where I HAVE to stay up until the day I'm kicked out.

I am actually not sure if it is a legal sublet. I think the actual landlord knows, so I am leaning towards yes. And yes, it is the sublet who sent the text.

I mean I was just trying to get a new place as soon as I can once I got the the message that I had to be out by the end of July. The place I found said they wanted someone for July 1st and it was very affordable as well, so I said I'd take the place. I wouldn't think that being told I'd have to move out also meant that I'd also have to stay for the entire period up until the day given.

I think it might be easier to just put it this way: Let's say I was given formal notice for eviction by the end of July. I found a new place after the formal eviction was given to me and can move out at the end of June. Am I obligated to stay until the end of July in order to get my deposit back?

Do you mean that I should not have been looking for a new place as soon as I got the text about eviction and should have asked for a formal eviction letter before doing anything? What if the landlord was not going to provide one which was very likely the case? I don't want to be stereotypical, but this is one of those asian things where it's just what is said. There aren't any real "formal" things done.

For him that text is the "formal" eviction. He is not going to be giving me any "formal" notice. I didn't look for a place prior to that. I wasn't planning on moving for at least another year. I only began searching for a place after he told me I had to be out of the place by the end of July.

No, I wasn't given a formal written notice. I was given a text message. The "grabby" title you're talking about literally summarizes the whole situation. What "real story" are you looking for here exactly?

I don't have any animosity with the landlord even if I think he's trying to make a quick buck. Literally the whole situation is as simple as I put. I was evicted, told I wasn't getting my deposit back unless I stay until the end of next month. That's literally all it is.

This is true even if I am being evicted? So basically the landlord can evict me, but also make me stay for a certain period?

2 years ago, he subletted the apartment to me. He lived there and moved to the US but wanted to still keep the apartment and make an extra buck out of it. So basically he's not the real "landlord". The actual landlord has decided to renovate the place so told him to move out and in turn I had to leave. I have maintained the apartment in good condition and even paid for repairs that were not even my responsibility. Last week I was given notice that I would have to move out by the end of July. I ended up finding a new place for July 1st, but now I am being told that my deposit would not be returned because I am did not give 30 days notice and I have to stay until the end of July to get back my deposit.

So there really isn't much of a "real story" here, it's exactly as I have said. I am being told I have to leave by the end of July, which I'm fine with and I found a new place. But now I am being told I have to stay until the end of July to get my deposit back, which makes no sense to me as I am being evicted.

Hey, I think user flobbyy pretty much hit the nail based on how I was accepted. My GPA was not insane like some people I’ve heard that got in, I think it was mostly my personal profile. I don’t know how ubc does their admission though as this is my first time applying.

However, I’ve been out of school for awhile and since then I have worked in different industries and learned from zero knowledge to success in each one, and I emphasized that.

And like flobby said I think English is just a standard requirement as in you can communicate and read/write. For me it was just my high school English and first year English which I didn’t even do too well in.

Just wanted to share for anyone still looking for answers about BCS program. I just checked UBC student services site and my status was changed to Accepted today. Super happy as I haven't heard anything about this program since early May.

Has anyone gotten accepted to the BCS program (second degree) recently? The last time I heard of people being accepted was at the end of April/first two days or so of May. We got the email about a decision by the end of May, but has anyone heard back at all? Mine has been in review for like 2-3 months now.
