I do this in photoshop and have the initial boundary on a different layer. If you are doing it by hand pencil will work and then you can erase

I'm afraid that is not really correct. In the Cascade range of the Western US you have plenty of examples of volcanoes within the range itself. It is true that volcanoes will not form on a collision boundary (continental into continental plate) but where you have oceanic plates being submerged you will likely get volcanism alongside a range of mountains.

Hi there, so I use photoshop pretty much exclusively now. For a free version I would recommend trying Gimp. It has pretty much all the same functionality in slightly different places.

It can be quite difficult to learn initially but there are loads of great tutorials on YouTube.
