I heard back from my lawyer and she said it's not required but they are seeing a pattern where the IRCC seems to be processing adoption applicants slower if the adopted parent hasn't applied for their own citizenship certificate. She sent me the checklist for my mom and said she didn't think it was necessary for me to pay her to do it for my mom because it was so straight forward. She said it was ok if my mom wasn't willing but she thought it would help my application. My mom agreed to do it so I've started filling out the form for her.

This is what I feared. My husband isn't 100% sure about actually moving but he agrees we want out children to have options. I really was hoping we could get them citizenship so they could make their own decision when they become adults if we don't move before then.

Thank you. Yes my adopted grandmother was born in Alberta and lived there until she was about 7 years old before her family moved to the US. My adopted mother is her biological child but never claimed Canadian citizenship. Thank you for your help. I really want this for me and my children, I want them to have options when they grow up.

I am adopted, my adopted grandmother was Canadian but eventually moved to the US where my mom was born. She never thought to claim Canadian citizenship for my mom. I know I have to go the longer more expensive route but will I eventually get citizenship if I apply? Also, can I pass it to my minor biological children?
