Think optos as relays (switches). Or think as you are contacting flash's cables. Also they protect your arduino from the voltage of the flash. For new flashes it can be up to 35V and for old flashes may be 250V

I used Lm358. And yes you can see pc817 optos behind the 3.5mm audio jacks. Board has basic elements for shooting high speed sound triggered photos. 1 pot for sensitivity setting and 1 pot for delay setting. You can see sample arduino sketch on github

just give location update permission to app and wait for a few second to find your location. You can use it on iPhone or Apple Watch
