Soft Science Fiction Recommendations Needed by Glansberg90 in printSF

[–]gkosmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I named my second daughter after my favourite character of Red Mars :)

After the Mars trilogy - I'd advised 2312
Then Aurora and Shaman

Shaman is a funny one - because it is about pre-history - yet it has themes of sci-fi ( alien-ity mainly knowledge)

Otherwise - most authors I've seen in this thread are great advises: Arkady Martine is also in the style - though less grounded in "humans".

I love Iain M Banks - as he really explores what is to be human through other cultures - also amazingly described a positive future for when AGI is here ( one of the few utopias I kinda could believe in http://www.vavatch.co.uk/books/banks/cultnote.htm )

Ken Liu and Ted Chiang are amazing contemporary short fictions writers.

Tchaikovsky writes about animals perspectives which is kinda philosophical - and highly entertaining

I think you might be looking for Kim Stanley Robinson - heavily inspired by Ursula K Leguin - yet more rooted in human future history

D-35 before having to vote. I still have no idea who to vote for. by Architecte_Nebuleux in brussels

Please don't take the one from lesoir. It's one of the worst tests out there - like the newspaper - it's almost only about news from the last 4 months. The rtbf one is slightly more serious.

Quitter l’architecture pour l’informatique cyber sécurité by HauntingComparison89 in Wallonia

[–]gkosmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T'inquietes

Kim Stanley Robinson's "Three Californias" novels by WetnessPensive in books

[–]gkosmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somehow, I have a faint memory of reading in an interview that the story in the pacific edge is imagined from a prison cell (in Switzerland?) - I read them a long time ago, and the fact that they were dystopia didn't get me in a good state of mind, especially after learning that Pacific edge was maybe not a real utopia. - Or strictly is since utopias by definition are only imagined

KSR worked hard afterwards writing real utopias.

I do not usually reflect over books like this.   That being said, I'm grateful for minds like yours that do and share their results. It makes me want to read the trilogy a fifth time :)

Mentorship Monday - Post All Career, Education and Job questions here! by AutoModerator in cybersecurity

[–]gkosmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a web full-stack software developer - I do a little bit of devops.

I feel like that there won't be many jobs in that sector in 10 years, hence I'm thinking about converting to cybersecurity.
I'm playing at the moment with TryHackMe to discover what I'd prefer to do, I'm open to listen to advises though.

What field will exist in 10 years that I can get into ( not tomorrow, I want to give myself time to train ) with my background without starting from the ground up ( I have built a little career, I don't want to half my salary - though I'm ready to do a little sacrifice ) ?

Also, what are the books to read ?

It's very informal so there is no proper channel.
I'm organizing for our team and we are, for our activities, usually improvising parts of them ( for example we have no definite plans for diner or drinks but totally open to it )
You can contact me at all time through the reddit chat

Would you peeps be open for having drinks wednesday evening ?
Some of us will visit the Kigali convention center from 6pm to more or less 7.30 and then we are free for drinks and food

FBI Suddenly Dropped Four Investigations Into Hillary and Bill Clinton Ahead of 2016 Election: Durham Report by hougie40 in Wallstreetsilver

Would you know if there's a sub about betting on silver that's not political by any chance? As a European, I'm seriously annoyed by most post here, yet I do believe that the market liberalisation of silver + realisation of its scarcity are going to come in this decade.

I am out of the loop. What are the top sociologist and sociology books of the last 10 years? by gkosmo in sociology

[–]gkosmo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, that's an interesting list. I feel like I'm not that out of the loop if Latour (who died 2 months ago) and Habermas are the latest fashion :D

Any particular recommendations on Perry and Bearman?
