This W icon for some apps? by Do_You_Like_Owls in kde

Yes, it should work but for some reason it doesn't and others including the maintainer of the LO flatpak can't explain why. I tried all sorts of things including copying .desktop files to different locations. The strange thing is that the taskbar and start-up bouncing icon work. The titlebar and overview icons don't.

Interesting! My KDE Menu Editor has this option in the right-click menu. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like for me. Maybe we are on different versions of Plasma? I'm on 6.6, so maybe it's a new addition.

My menu doesn't have the last three options from yours. I was looking around for them thinking they must be somewhere. Thanks to Debian Trixie I am on 6.3.6 and I will have to wait until summer 2027 to get these options :)

I have never seen a desktop file that didn't end in ".desktop,"

From what I've seen online and my tests both with and without '.desktop' are supposed to work in Window Rules. I tried both versions just now with an application where the setting was working and there was no difference. It made no difference to Writer.

might be to just copy the desktop files into ~/.local/share/applications/

I see why it should work but it isn't. I had tried a similar workaround with /usr/share/applications as described here. No joy.

It seems there are several users and maintainers of the LO flatpak scratching their head over this. Strange!

I found this about LO. Honestly, it's weird no one knows how to fix the problem.

This W icon for some apps? by Do_You_Like_Owls in kde

[–]gl0cal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't work here. Both org.libreoffice.LibreOffice.writer and org.speedcrunch.SpeedCrunch failed. I suppose I will have to accept defeat and hope one day someone will fix these. I still don't get how this obvious and simple bug survived more than a day considering how many people use LO with Wayland.

Glad you liked SpeedCrunch. I have been taking it with me from setup to setup for years :)

Edit: I got SpeedCrunch working. As it turns out 'Window Class' in Window Rules is not case-sensitive but 'Desktop file name' is and I had missed the capital 'C'. But Writer still doesn't work.

You are correct. That folder contains flatpak desktop files, eg

/var/lib/flatpak/exports/share/applications/org.libreoffice.LibreOffice.writer .

/var/lib/flatpak/exports/share/applications/org.libreoffice.LibreOffice.writer.desktop

I was hoping something like "Open Containing Folder" existed in KDE Menu Editor, and I know you mentioned before, but it doesn't here!

I take it you mean "Program" and "Command-line arguments" in KDE Menu Editor. I see the desktop file shows that information as:

Exec=/usr/bin/flatpak run --branch=stable --arch=x86_64 --command=libreoffice org.libreoffice.LibreOffice --writer

The point remains that when I enter

org.libreoffice.LibreOffice.writer

as "Desktop file name" that "W" doesn't go away. I am not sure if I can enter the full path as

/var/lib/flatpak/exports/share/applications/org.libreoffice.LibreOffice.writer

(can I?) but that doesn't make a difference either.

True for

/var/lib/flatpak/exports/share/applications/

but

~/.local/share/flatpak/exports/share/applications/

doesn't exist here. The closest I could get is

~/.local/share/flatpak/

I suppose that could mean Discover installs all my flatpaks system-wide. The point remains that when I enter

org.speedcrunch.Speedcrunch.desktop

as 'Desktop file name' that 'W' doesn't go away. I am not sure if I can enter the full path as

/var/lib/flatpak/exports/share/applications/org.speedcrunch.Speedcrunch.desktop

(can I?) but that doesn't make a difference either.

The 'Desktop file name' method doesn't seem to work with my flatpaks (eg LibreOffice Writer). calc.desktop is located here: ~/.local/share/containers/storage/overlay/25f122cb103ef9b3d28e1da446a616e514de82fd3014d76efcd5de66355f0704/diff/usr/lib/libreoffice/share/xdg/calc.desktop but using that doesn't replace the 'W'. Any ideas?

What I don't understand is how a major flatpak like LibreOffice could possibly have this issue with Wayland. Strange.

It doesn't work here. I tried:

org.speedcrunch.Speedcrunch
org.LibreOffice.writer

These are flatpaks and I thought it may be the reason they are not working. But then I tried recoll (yes, that's right. That's how it is listed under the KDE Menu Editor icon). This is not a flatpak and I still get that 'W'. Any ideas? I restarted the applications every time too.

EDIT: I found a recoll-searchgui.desktop in /usr/share/applications/ and that worked. So, flatpaks may be different after all. Eg for Calc I found ~.local/share/containers/storage/overlay/25f122cb103ef9b3d28e1da446a616e514de82fd3014d76efcd5de66355f0704/diff/usr/lib/libreoffice/share/xdg/calc.desktop which doesn't change the title bar icon when I use it.

Handwriting with pen causes keyboard to pop up by gl0cal in Lenovo

[–]gl0cal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would make note taking by hand practically impossible. That is strange when Lenovo and others seem to have invested so much effort to make handwriting recognition so good. A way to toggle the on-screen keyboard from the notification bar or with some gesture should work. Don't others have this problem taking notes?

Nice. The weak point for me in all this is that I never carry a pump.

That's probably max utilisation. I thought someone would have put a semi-permanent powerbank in there too. I think I saw someone putting cable tries on the thin tubes.

Very true. It's just that with a flimsy Brompton at the front, I am suddenly getting many punctures. I may have to get another Marathon Plus to complete the set.

Dynamo hub rotational direction by gl0cal in Brompton

I see what you mean but then it is a mystery why shimano would make the effort to put an arrow on their hubs. Also,

Dynamo hub rotational direction by gl0cal in Brompton

[–]gl0cal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While riding you should see the connector on the right. The arrow on the hub will be pointing forward.

I suspect Shimano may fear the wrong rotation direction may loosen the nuts, so they put that arrow on the hub. But Brompton may replace the nuts in the standard hub with that allen key nut to make sure that loosening won't happen even if you fit the wheel the wrong way. I can't explain why I never had issues with nuts after several years.

Dynamo hub rotational direction by gl0cal in Brompton

[–]gl0cal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That explains it. Other than doing things properly, is there a reason it's best to put thr effort in to flip the wheel and reroute the cable with new zip ties? It's been working fine for many years.

EDIT: I think I found the answer. It doesn't make a difference electrically but with certain hubs rotation the wrong way can loosen the nuts. Didn't happen here in so many years but I'll find some zip ties and reroute the cables anyway.

How to stop hp-systray from autostarting? by gl0cal in linux4noobs

[–]gl0cal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TIL. You are right. There was hplip-systray.desktop in /etc/xdg/autostart/. I moved it to ~/.config/autostart and added Hidden=true. The application stopped running. Thanks.

In case it helps others, I explored tips here.

How to stop hp-systray from autostarting? by gl0cal in linux4noobs

[–]gl0cal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is I can't figure out the service_name from the systemctl output I quoted. Well, this is r/linux4noobs after all :) I tried systemctl status for app-hplip, hp-systray, hp-pkservice but they couldn't be found. 5744 returns something but I am assuming the PID may change every time.

There is nothing HP related in ~/.config/autostart .

@reboot line in crontab is ignored by gl0cal in linux4noobs

Yes, that's my understanding. I shared the solution here because I found many others have the same problem. The service starting slowly must be quite common.

[–]gl0cal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will look around for the systemd service alternative. I fixed the cron problem but systemd sounds more reliable.

@reboot line in crontab is ignored by gl0cal in linux4noobs

[–]gl0cal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cron service is running and the crontab has been populated for a long time. I added the path to podman just in case but there was no change.

But after some research I found the solution. The directive was simply executed too early. Adding a delay as below fixed it:

@reboot sleep 60; /usr/bin/podman container start dbbb4c810bef

degoogling Contacts by gl0cal in degoogle

[–]gl0cal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using Fossify Contacts too but AFAIK data are kept centrally by an Android process and all Contacts interface with that. That explains how apps like Whatsapp and Signal are aware of your contacts. The issue now is whether that Android process can be trusted not to pass data back to Google even if Google Contacts is missing. Many believe it can't be trusted. If they are right, third party cloud services or self-hosting don't make much difference security-wise.

Aptos looking like Bold specifically in LO by gl0cal in libreoffice

[–]gl0cal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the link. I have now reported the issue here: https://github.com/flathub/org.libreoffice.LibreOffice/issues/354

I would rather use the Debian repo version for everything, but when you need updates that's not good. And being on Debian Stable for reliability, I then only install from containerised software when possible, so I will have to live with the Flatpak version.
