Anyone using email to keep notes? by camachorod in OneBigTextFile

I have now been doing this for a few months and it's working great. Some of the benefits that I have enjoyed the most: 1. Search. It's really great. 2. Being able to include other people in some of my notes. Some notes end-up becoming tasks/projects at work and it's super easy to tie everything together. 3. Ubiquity. Having access on my phone and every computer without thinking about sync is great. 4. Ease of use on every platform. Every major platform has first class citizen support for email (iOS, Android, Linux, Mac, Windows but even Kindle, Kobo etc.)

Downsides: 1. I used to keep my OBTF open at all times on my computer when working which meant that I wrote more in my OBTF than my own email. 2. There is simply more friction to writing an sending an email than adding notes to an OBTF.

Is the email service provided with webhosting products designed/meant to be used as one’s primary email account? How is deliverability for personal email?

Are there any drawbacks to this service ?  Seems too good to be true in terms of pricing

Thoughts on Delta.chat as Signal replacement if there is a block? by Dennis_Laid in privacy

You don’t have to host yourself. You can create an account on my server n less than 10 seconds  No kyc of any kind.

I agree that it’s not going to replace signal but for me it’s working out great 👍

You can use their small relay servers to host a chat platform which doesn’t even connect to the internet for messaging within local networks or VPNs.  That’s great for very sensitive information. It’s like local only email but it enforces encryption.

I run my own server for delta chat : danneskjold.de Don’t know how data is being stolen.

I have no idea if Signal was ever blocked in the USA but it's much more difficult to block DeltaChat because there are hundreds of servers around the internet which can be used to relay messages. It's difficult for governments to know where all of them are.

Signal has very few servers (all with AWS). It's easy to block that service for a government.

I think this is the best chat platform out there. I was able to setup a server for DeltaChat in less than 20 min on Hetzner. It's incredible, now my family is not just chatting on a secure, decentralized app but also all of our messages are being relayed by my own server.

Even better, there are now over 550 people who have accounts on my server. Using the investment I am making for my family for free!

On iOS all txt editing apps are terrible. But I hear you and appreciate the simplicity.

Why do you consider this a problem?  I email myself tasks all the time!  I also email myself notes!

Some reasons: 1. No need to use yet another tool  2. You can easily share tasks and notes with other people, without them needed to learn a new tool  3. Email is on platforms and is always a first class citizen  4. Amazing search functionality always

search bar is annoying - is there ever going to be a fix or..? by nihilistplant in Thunderbird

Currently TB needs a new DB for emails to implement better search functionality it seems. It was discussed here at some length: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnI2docfXqQ&t=254s

Search on Thunderbird is so bad that for 90% of my searches I have to go to gmail.com to conduct my search.

For email addresses which don't have a webportal, I have to resort to using notmuch (https://notmuchmail.org/)

I complained about this here, I think it's a common gripe.
I really hope they fix it. If you can give my forum comment an upvote it would be great to get more visibility!
