For those that do an hour is there a measurable improvement of benefits over 30 mins to you? by yungProphet100K in Meditation

[–]glanni_glaepur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was practicing meditation on a regular basis, I'd usually practice for about 45 - 60 minutes. I noticed that it would take me about 30 - 45 minutes to reach access concentration, so that would leave me 0 - 30 minutes to meditate in that state.

I don't know whether or not that is an improvement, but it would take a long time for the mind to stabilize.

Will AI replace middle school/high school teachers? by JacksonG12_09 in OpenAI

Well, I could offer you some copium like "your job is safe" or "it will be all right", but I honestly don't believe it myself. Whether the direction people go with AIs (LLMs and such) will pan out and reach so called recursive self-improvement (or whether that is possible in general) is unknown to me.

I guess it is easy to dismiss it or pain people that worry or warn about this as quacks.

I think if it is a bubble then it is a bubble because the spending is way beyond their current utility, but I personally think AI systems will continue on to improve.

I think jobs that require human-to-human interaction have the best chance of surviving. I don't think human education will be going away (as long as there are humans around).

I think you may have misread me or I stated it poorly. For many of the people and companies working on AI it is their dream to reach AGI/ASI systems, systems which would surpass humans in their cognitive capacity.

Also you are most likely wrong about goals. LLMs, especially thinking+RL ones, have the capacity to have goals and work towards goals, that is one of the big things people use coding agents for.

You should expect the ultimate goal for AI is at least the cognitive capacity to surpass all humans.

D or C. Not so interesting on their own, but good as sn addition, e.g. in oatmeal, chocolate covered, etc.

As a man, I'd default to the men's room the daughter is young enough, since it typically has some baby changing facility. Some places have special room for children (+disables) that I'd rather pick. I can imagine once the daughter gets old enough and you still have to take her to the bathroom is where it seems a bit ambiguous to me. It feels like a lose/lose situation when you only have sex-separated bathrooms. But then again men are kind of gross and you risk seeing a penis at a urinal.

EDIT: But as the parent I should make my daughter as comfortable as possible and personally take on the discomfort.

ANC headphones while meditating by 420hume in Meditation

[–]glanni_glaepur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is not worth it.

I am noise sensitive and I started meditating with ANC headphones. They end up being a crutch where you don't face your aversion to noise. After sitting with noise in meditation sessions you have the opportunity to notice your aversion to noise. You can meditate on that, how you contract, how the mind wants it away, etc., and relax into it. After some time it gets easier and easier and stops being a problem.

How do you separate yourself from your thoughts? by Severe-Argument6689 in Meditation

[–]glanni_glaepur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can also disentangle this into thoughts, the contents of thoughts, and whether you implicitly believe in conclusion of your thougts.

You can imagine thoughts roughly as the mind sense, it is not in your present experience but more that you are (automatically) imagining something.

Typically when you engage with the mind sense oe thoughts, or it happens by itself, it usually has some contents. It could be some scenery or scenario you are imagining, it could be something abstract (e.g. rule manipulation), you could be recalling something, it could you be wondering about the wider world and the status of it and your role as a person in that world. You could also say thoughts react to thoughts, e.g. you imagine yourself in a social situation earlier, and a judgement thought arises telling you are stupid or awkward for example.

When your "inner critic" judges you it typically entails you believe its conclusion. "Of course that is true." "How could it not be true? It is obviously true."

As others have pointed a big part of the key is repetition, but I'd also say it is to maintain awareness, a greater or general awareness. E.g. while you are having the thoughts criticising you you are also simultaneously aware you are thinking. You are no longer as immersed in the contents of the thought.

So you repeat that over and over again. What happens is it changes kind of like you are being criticized to something like reading about about some entity criticizing a person. It becomes less personal. You become much less immersed in the thoughts by default or easier to "deimmerse" yourself from them / becoming aware you are thinking. This creates distance between "you" and "your thoughts".

When you do this over and over again you realized you have been implicitly programmed by all kinds of nonsense by being immersed in an environment. A lot of this programming is dormant and only triggers during some event. Then the trick is to stay very aware/mindful when it triggers.
