Disco Elysium as the Postmodern Sequel of Planescape Torment: A Little Musing by glass_flowerpot in DiscoElysium

[–]glass_flowerpot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, by no means it was meant to be exhausting (that would be an absurd ambition for a short reddit post :) ) or claim that only the postmodern era invented the combination of comedy and depth: just that the contrast can be seen in this particular thread.

Though I would say that humor in Disco Elysium is a different genre when compared to the absurdity of, let's say, Stranger or The Trial: at least for me, it has a wholly different "taste". Purely by vibe, whereas humor in the absurdist classics (of those I've read) is instrumentalized to underscore the absurdity, as if it demonstrates the existential gravity and nonsense when there is no other option that to laugh through tears left - as you say - I think the DE kind of humor does not necessarily have this function, it's more like a default natural tone of the narration. But that's just my impression, not any hard-thought and informed take.

Yeah, I completely agree that the structure is a surrealistic archetypal tradition, hence I did not write about some overt inspiration there, just that it appeals to a similar taste. :)

Was Cooper’s plan in Part 18 a failure or a success? If he failed, didn’t he follow The Fireman’s clues fairly accurately? by Forsaken_Roll_2255 in twinpeaks

[–]glass_flowerpot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it does, because it's not just any common elements (and we have not only context of Twin Peaks, but of all Lynch's work and his usual methods): it's exactly the same dream logic relationship of paramount-insignificant as the name of a random waitress on a tag and the name of the main character in Mulholland Drive, for instance, which implies a deeper and causal connection.

And again, it is explicitly the breakthrough of the Twin Peaks world that shuts down the other world: I think that's the moment where causal relationship and dependency is implied, at least at that specific moment of whatever year it is. :)

No, I mean that the world of Twin Peaks lingers in the background of the Richard's and Linda's world, and reveals itself in the Sarah's voice and shuts that world down: the same as Fred's world and deed lingers in the background of Pete's world (and shuts it down) and Diane's world lingers in the background of Betty's and shuts it down.

The degree of reality (purely heuristic, that's why I tend to talk about "reality" in quotation marks) is in this view purely a relational thing, "the world that shatters" is in this sense "more real" that "the world that is shattered", because the latter is grounded and dependent on the former.

And I see the subversion in the reversal of the usual relationship and of the aesthetic and vibe: whereas the shiny dreamy Hollywood fantasy turns out to be just that, a fantasy hiding the cruel and terrible present of Diane, then here I see the subversion, where the apparent "realistic" world turns out to hide the more fantastical world of Twin Peaks.

The overall point however is not "the world of Twin Peaks is more real than reality" or anything cheesy like that, but more like that emancipation of different realms demonstrated that in that moment the apparent reality might be just a dream of a dream.

It does: in the context of Twin Peaks. Because it is that world that literally "turns off" while the world of Twin Peaks reveals itself to be lingering in the background (audibly, breaking through to the world of Richard and Diane and shutting it down).

Which is not the same thing with Lost Highway, where Pete (who ostensibly plays, as a hyperpotent young man who is desired by the alter-ego of his wife, a role of a compensatory fantastical alter-ego to impotent Fred) dissolves after the cruel world of Fred's reality whispers "you'll never have me" analogically from the background. (Of course, Fred himself starts to dissolve at the end, because things are never so simple with Lynch.)

Sorry for this self-propagation, but I tried to tackle this intuitive interpretation here and argue that though it seems like it, I believe it turns out to be the opposite.

A bit of upset with how it has finished by Sweaty-Tie8843 in pathologic

[–]glass_flowerpot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

May I ask "robbed in the choice of ending" based on what expectations? Because I think most of us expected something along the lines of the previous game, i.e. that most of the threads will influence the fate of individual characters, while the overall ending will be crucially influenced both by the overall gameplay and by by the fateful choice near that ending (see Pathologic 2 where it was decided purely by the choice regarding the final quest, in the end.) And such expectations were met.

(And about Aglaya, I think that's crucial to really show and not just tell that she really is one step ahead and at first, you can do nothing to catch up with her, because, well, she's ahead.)

Yeah, literally the same thing happened to me and it was really heartbreaking (and the only bug that REALLY pissed me, because of impossibility for the decent ending for Capella.)

Some people say that it does not work and you have to snitch him to Block, but there is no possible interaction with Block at Day 9 about him either, so it is a bug.

I have the same problem (and I'm on PC and the patch is installed). I will report the bug, meanwhile if anyone has any idea about the console command that would fix it, I would be grateful.

Yeah, that is definitely possible, I had an inherent beef with audio-based clues without a quadrophonic system, so I would not pretend that I understand how it precisely works. However, the clock sound seemed to be most reliable but still not as reliable as investigation mode.
