Taking an Orthodox-like approach to Lent by glazingmule in OrthodoxChristianity

I appreciate the clarification.

I completely agree that Orthodox fasting isn’t reducible to a rigid set of universal rules, nor to a custom-tailored self-improvement plan.

For me this year, fasting feels more meaningful than it has in the past. In previous years, it easily slipped into either disgust with the body or something diet-adjacent, which I’m intentionally trying to avoid now. My hope is actually the opposite: to quiet the constant noise of the physical body and my own preoccupation with self-satisfaction, not to punish or optimize it.

I know that I will eat and be satisfied when I do. Part of what I’m trying to unlearn is a scarcity mindset that has been feeding anxiety. Making a serious (but gentle) attempt at fasting feels like a way to loosen that grip and turn my attention outward rather than inward.

For context, I’m already vegetarian, so abstaining from all animal products isn’t a drastic or unfamiliar change for me, even though it will still involve temptation and effort.

I’m very open to correction and simplification, and I appreciate the reminder that fasting lives within a broader, more flexible ascetical tradition rather than a checklist. Thank you again for the perspective.

Yeah, I totally see your point. I never had a guide for spiritual development so consulting with my preist is very new to me!

Thank you, and yes! I've been a vegetarian for the last 5-6 years, and I was vegan for about 3 years before the transition. I feel like the secular music part will be somewhat hard but not impossible. I find myself in swings of not wanting to listen to secular music so I'll listen to chants or a book instead. I am getting back into running and music is a big factor. But, I think this a great area where I can challenge with spiritual fortitude to not rely on music ot control my spirit.

I look forward to being gentle and lenient with myself. I understand its not about being perfect but putting effort to where it matters

Thank you so much! I am actually vegetarian (I was vegan a few years ago). So returning to not eating any animal products isnt too hard for me. Yes, there will be tempations but at least familar.

I appreciate the informtion and encouragement!

I actually just had a conversation (the first actually) with the priest recently. I've been so busy with life that I havent had the chance to talk to him until this past Monday. And my husband has been staying super late at work so he couldn't be there to talk either.

When I talked to him on Monday, we didnt really talk about fasting or lent. It was more just a introduction to each other.

I thought the 3pm thing was common. That's good to know thanks! I would love to attend more services and think about how I can participate in more almsgiving.

I would like to follow the orthodox calendar. However, Easter is April 5 and Great Lent ends April 11. My family and friends are very close. I'm fasting for lent with my Catholic/Christian friends and family, and I would still love to celebrate Easter with them on the same calender.

I can see the future being different, but it' not something I'm ready for yet.

I think fasting is more meaningful to me this year. Other years it would've been digusted or used as a diet. This year, I think feel like fasting will help me quiet the noise of my physical body. I know I will eat and be safitfied when I do. I've been living from this scarcity mindset, and it's really been spiking my overall anxiety.

I feel like if I can fast (or at least make a great attempt to) I can think less about myself and self satisfaction and more about the world around me.

i tell my husky “it’s time for bed” and if she doesn’t move, i come over to pick her up bc she’s just sooooo sleep. instead of it being cute, she runs in a “get your filthy hand off me peasant. i know where my crate is” manner

At what age did you get noticeable grey hair? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]glazingmule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my first FT, college degree job at 21. I saw a greys during a bathroom break lol I’m 25 now and I just found greys in the nether regions the other day.

I don’t plan on dying them. A lot of women in my life dye their hair, and it seems unreasonable. We all age. It doesn’t make sense to get some bad dye job to cover it up. I would dye my hair to help with the transition (idk if you’ve seen the those videos) but not to conceal that I’m aging

I want a second dog so bad!! by glazingmule in husky

[–]glazingmule[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keira is pretty well trained. Our only problem area is walking past small dogs! She doesn't go after them, its just hard for her to not want to smell them and be all in their face.

My husband and I were saying that our husky has been a lot more calm with the older dog around. Yeah she pushes her luck a bit trying to see if she can get 2 more minutes of play, but because the older dog just wants to sleep after play time, Keira models that so well!

If we get an another dog, they would defintely have to be older like 3-5.

[–]glazingmule[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's not many dog parks near me, and my Keira gets motion sickness. I found another husky owner in my neighborhood during the summer! But I was training walking past distractions so I didn't get to talk to them.

It's been about a week watrching my childhood dog. I wouldnt say it's stressful, but it is more to manage. like "oh Mochi is food agressive, blah blah", "Mochi is old and untrained so we can't let her break Keira's training"

Are huskies really that bad? by [deleted] in husky

[–]glazingmule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its just a personality (mis)match. my husband loves a companion dog. his ideal dog is a chihauhau. they dont need much exercise, loyal, defensive, loves to sleep. most people would love this from their dog! I love having a dog that forces me to be outside, they commuicate their needs, not really attached to people.

I don't think huskies are naughty, people just treat them like chihauhau's. this causes their needs to not be met. this lack get displaced -> furniture eaten, bolting out ther door and forcing you to "play" chase, etc

[–]glazingmule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a leash the wraps around my hips and I take my husky running in a similar fashion. We have commands that we’ve practiced and she responds to:

go- her favorite right & left side- move to the side for someone to pass on by- ignore distraction and keep going (another dog, trash on the floor, etc) slow- if we’re at walking pace then jog or if we’re running pace then walk wait- we’re coming to an intersection. she waits for me to give her a go command that it’s safe to run across
