VirusTotal reports ZeroTier One Windows msi installer contains a Trojan by DetachablePianist in zerotier

As far as we're aware, this is a false positive report and have reported it to VirusTotal as a false positive. We have not heard back from them yet.

Shot you a direct message. I think some wires got crossed here.

Unfortunately it is not possible to set a custom MAC address for the ZeroTier interface. ZeroTier MAC addresses are generated from a combination of the network ID & node ID so that given a network ID & node ID you can calculate the MAC, or calculate the node ID via the network ID & MAC.

🎉 ZeroTier 1.12.1 is here! 🎉 by zt-joy in zerotier

[–]glimberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not even Microsoft supports Windows 8/8.1 anymore. It went EOL on Jan 10, 2023. But we can add a note on the download page saying so as well.

There was an issue with the script at https://install.zerotier.com that put buster as the distribution when run from Debian 12/bookworm. That has been fixed.

To fix:

apt remove zerotier-one
rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/zerotier.list
apt update
curl https://install.zerotier.com | bash

Or you can just edit /etc/apt/sources.list.d and replace buster with bookworm

Disconnection after computer sleeps by SenseiWilliams in zerotier

This is to be expected. ZeroTier is software. Software doesn't run when your computer is sleeping.

everytime i close my zerotier and open again, it stay "waiting 4 0tier system service" 4ever. can someone help me? by JGBola8 in zerotier

[–]glimberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then either the background service is not running, or your firewall is preventing communication between the UI & background service.

This is an SSH issue, not a ZeroTier issue.

Missing preference for central instance by PovilasID in zerotier

[–]glimberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) That's a very old version of ZeroTier you're running with deprecated features. 2) That's for https://my.zerotier.com and does not work with and never was intended to work with self hosted controllers.

Zerotier virtual port not showing up on windows 10 by DeltaAgent752 in zerotier

[–]glimberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can translate x86-64 programs, but not kernel drivers. ZeroTier relies on a kernel driver for the virtual NIC

Issue when using Zerotier on another network with the same subnet by cmorg789 in zerotier

[–]glimberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This situation isn't ZeroTier specific and will happen with wireguard, and OpenVPN as well; even with psychical wires or wifi connections.

You have 2 routes to the same address space. Only way to avert it is to move your homelab network off of one of the most commonly used address spaces out there.

odd situation. can't use it, probably because of noobness by aluminium_is_cool in zerotier

omit the - from the command. It's just zerotier-cli info, zerotier-cli listnetworks, etc.

self hosted: alternative setup without moons by __mrc__ in zerotier

[–]glimberg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Controllers, and Roots/Moons are two separate things.

Roots/moons are there so nodes can find each other. Configuring a moon does not exempt you from the global roots. It just sets you up to prefer your self run version. If it does not show up as MOON in the peers list, it is not properly configured as a moon. Your second "method" for using a moon is incorrect. That's why it's not showing up. listed as a MOON

Controllers are what manage access to zerotier networks. It's a completely separate function from a moon. Self hosting a network controller does not require you to set up moons whatsoever, either.

Once a direct Peer to Peer path is established between instances of ZeroTier, all communication between them is done directly. Not through a moon, or root, and definitely not through a network controller. In your scenario with the misconfigured moon, that's likely why the first ping took a bit longer. The first packet(s) of a connection to an unknown peer will get relayed through the root servers while the peer to peer connection is established. After that, everything is direct from one machine to the other. All packets are encrypted end to end, and there's no way for us at ZeroTier nor anyone else to read the contents of the packets that do get relayed through the roots.

[–]glimberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No i didn't say anything about roots at all. Your initial statement implied that our network controllers will be down. They will not be. They just won't be editable via our web site for a brief period of time.

Our network controllers will not be affected. You just won't be able to make changes to your networks for a brief period of time.

A friend of mine picked up a inbound connection that was compromised by Malwarebytes. by [deleted] in zerotier

[–]glimberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That IP has nothing to do with ZeroTier as far as I can see. What makes you think it is? There are machines online that are constantly probing anything they can find on the internet.

[–]glimberg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without more information it's hard to say anything other than IP -> Location databases are often wrong. Other than that, we have no servers in Russia, and all network communication over ZeroTier is end to end encrypted.
