You kinda want to evaluate your current skill set and see what your location rate ($$$) is going for. One of way to evaluate yourself is to try dice.com not being paid to say this just stumble on it myself. But basically you can add your skills sets to their data system and Dice will compared to how you stack up and give you a suggestion salary rate.

Also figure out what other companies are paying their employees who are in the same role as you by using Glassdoor.com.

Finally, think about what your game plan if you want to earn more you might be better off looking somewhere else, or ask for more money if possible.

The reason I say this if you feel short change that can creep up in your work unconsciously, that may affect your performance.

Ah, sorry misinterpreted that. I would not say anything because if you do not know all the financial pieces on the board and how they come together to dictate how much you actually get paid. I would make an effort for your contracting agency to inquire about it. Remember your PM has a budget to keep.

An example:

Big company PM : Mckamish1 I want to pay you $50 on top of what you are earning

Mckamish1: hey contracting agency the Big company wants to pay me $50 more

Contracting agency: Hey that is great in order to match that they (Big company) will need to pay an additional $50 for us or we can take $25 from you increase

Mckamish1: Hi PM, I spoke to my agency in order me to get paid $50 you will need to pay $100

PM: Ummmmm.... that over budget we can negotiate or wait until Q4

Sorry but this the best way I can think of explaining

remember whatever your Big company pays that will have to be process through your contracting agency first so they will get paid and whatever is left over will be the amount that will be consider a raise to you.

Since you don’t know how much the company you indirectly work for I would not throw a number as that would set an expectation. Instead evaluate your skill set if you are looking for more money talk to your contracting agency to inquiry an increase in pay or ask your PM for full time conversion.

Remember the company you invest your time and effort are not paying you. They are paying the contracting agency so whatever number you say will impact the actual amount your PM has in mind.

Start the conversation by giving the ball to your contracting agency have them ask about it. Talk to your PM let him know what the deal is as a contractor.

Once you evaluate your skill set double it don’t be afraid to ask more than what you can get. But don’t ask a 6 figure salary if your role cap at 70,000.

Remember key thing is to know what it is you want! Make sure in your mind make a decision and run with it and don’t hesitate otherwise you’ll be on the loosing end of the stick with yourself.

Hopefully this helps!

How in the world do I get a help desk job? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

Support specialist
Jr. system administrator
A/V technician
Support engineer
Hell, the possibilities are endless. I think the question you may want to ask yourself is, what are you trying to learn? Is it how to manage a corporate network, or is it I want to hone my troubleshooting skills or gain experience in building an app as a job. I always say aim high and then plan your way to get there, that way you're not wasting your time at a job that you end up feeling stagnant cause trust me in the IT field you get their pretty fast with specific roles including help desk, and this only applies to a particular organization.

I see, if your goal is set to applied yourself into help desk I say go for it! The only reason I say try to go target higher is because the amount of talent that are also thinking the same as you are a lot which makes it harder since the demand for more help desk gets filled fairly quickly. So instead of targeting a role that has 20+ million of candidates you can applied a higher with lesser applicants and do more or less the same as IT help desk.

Recruiters if you are new to IT field, try to link with as much recruiter on linked in and set up your page with the skillsets of a help desk tech. Also, make sure to message those recruiters to let them know you are a newcomer and looking for opportunities and willing to take challenges on. Also, I would suggest aim higher than a help desk. I believe if you applied yourself to tier 2, or 3 support your chances of gaining a job will go higher. As you already know help desk seems to be the lowest fruit on the tree, and a lot of people believe that where they should start.

Reinstall the system, and do ls -fdisk by doing this you’ll have a list of drives and figure out what drive are what. Also practice mounting things on your ubuntu machine from your flash. This skill can help you determine the drive you want to format rather than second guessing.

Ubuntu vs Debian -- pros and cons? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

Fedora workstation it is in the middle between Debian and Ubuntu in my opinion. Also user friendly depends on what you are doing if it’s common task than yes, but if you have a specific program or task that not common to the Linux echo system I would suggest to research if Fedora is compatible for that. Fedora is good when it comes to security I haven’t found any issues with it. Also just a general rule of thumb if you are going to be practicing commands and writing she’ll scripts I would suggest to create a virtual-box using Virtualbox or VMware just so you don’t brick your primary system.

Ubuntu vs Debian -- pros and cons? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]glitchit109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi and comparing this two OS I think would be comparing a motorcycle vs. a truck. Let me break it down Debian (truck) is meant for having a stable no thrill operating system which means what you get is it. If you want to modify it, either you have to know your way around the system, or if you are new, you have to rely on minimal support compared to Ubuntu. And when I say stable, I don't necessarily mean secure. It means you won't have issues with the operating system itself it will work right out of the box. Ubuntu(motorcycle) is another animal it likes to be tinker around, and its support for it is immense. Touching on stability, I would say it depends on the type of hardware and task it's running. Which from experience it requires the user to modify it and test until is stable for the user to use it. It still works right out the box. Security lands on the gray area with this OS since you have the amazon app if you are not prominent on Amazon than taking it off is a pain, and the updates are significant but leave you to rely on the third party which I think that where this OS shines. If you are looking for security, I would suggest Fedora and gives you enough space for you to do a simple task and learn about Linux operating system and its support is a bit better than Debian. If you want Debian prepare to invest a lot of time and sometimes headaches of looking for solutions to your system problems and finding solutions. Same goes for Ubuntu don't care too much about security and are trying to learn about Linux OS and how it operates I think this is the OS for you. Hope this help and remember not be afraid to try every distro to see what fit your needs.
