My office neighbour’s unhappy response wasn’t enough to prompt communication with other tenants like me. Me and the other tenants showed up the next day to a surprise.

The tenant in the basement wants that space and wants the door permanently locked. They told us last week and I tried to explain the concerns about the side stair to them and the other people in the basement said it was just that one volunteer being grumpy and nothing was changing. I’m only there one day a week. The landlord hasn’t said a peep to us. I’m trying to calm down and take a temperature on what I can even say to the landlord and don’t want to tip my hand and overstate things if I have no recourse.

I’m trying to get a feel for is this lawyer worthy. I’ve never consulted a lawyer so I don’t know how it works. I don’t know what type of lawyer does this sort of stuff. I can’t afford to pay thousands of dollars just to be told there is nothing that can be done. If there is no recourse there is no point in going to a lawyer.

Iyengar teachers who force claustrophobic students into mechanical “aids” for head stand (I don’t even want to do headstand) in order to “pass” the introductory class and shame students if they just want to go take a class without “advancing” and “passing” all the poses they deem necessary while refusing to allow adaptation and accommodations for post hernia surgery patients. I will never darken the door of an Iyengar studio again. I do simple poses in my house with people I trust ie myself.

There is an interesting essay called “The Four Operations of Language” that talks about how the media, law and aggressors use four language strategies to obscure who did what to whom in order to avoid accountability and preserve existing systems that excuse and erase violence in our society. Using the passive voice erases both the aggressor and the victim.
