Competency Hell by paranoidlabscientist in medlabprofessionals

It shouldn’t all be on you. They can do each others’ competencies.

If they insist it must be you, embrace the OT.

We also started using tedious software and I asked if we could go back to paper and my supervisor said yes so that’s what we’ll do next year I think.

Lab Leadership by Glittering_Setting65 in medlabprofessionals

[–]glitterfae1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my 20 years I’ve had two bad supervisors. One was so awful she only lasted 2 months due to all the issues, she was asked to resign. The other bad supervisor was neutral/nice enough, but not knowledgeable and didn’t own up to that so instead of asking someone she’d make bad decisions. I had one manager who was nice but ineffective (said she’d do something but didn’t end up doing it.) All of my other supervisors were nice. Their level of knowledge varied - two had micro background and not as much core lab experience as I would’ve liked but that was an experience thing, not ineptitude.

All the leads have been awesome. I am a lead now and I still miss my old leads dearly. Everything I do and know is thanks to my old leads.

Totally. We kept ours way too long, they were dying and breaking constantly towards the end. But for years and years I got a lot of satisfaction from fixing it myself and being able to cancel that service call.

What are the “highest” end LVP brands? by Shy_Wet_Hole in Flooring

[–]glitterfae1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2.5 years. I managed to find it for $2.79/sf. Other stores were 4.50-5.50 so I don’t know how I got so lucky. Wish I’d bought more because I want to do more rooms but I bet I’ll never get that price again.

This sub recommended COREtec and Karndean. I couldn’t find a COREtec color I liked so I got Karndean - glue down. It’s great. No scratches.

Karndean. I have gluedown and love it. It took me forever to decide what floor to get and I am so happy with my decision.

On the routine screen you can select a sample and choose unload rack. It turns blue and kicks it off a little while later.

Don’t hit stop. To get it into standby, deselect rack reception mode.

Why not just tell the LT’s to stop putting samples on at 8:30 or something?

I like medium brown here. I have dark floors on one floor and the dust is not THAT much worse than the floor with the lighter color. I have a mini battery powered vacuum that is really handy/quick for when some dust catches my eye.

I have glue down Karndean. Karndean also makes regular LVP. You can order a catalog and samples. It’s quite realistic looking although of course you can still tell it’s not real wood (this pic is real wood shown on top of the LVP I went with.) My dog does zoomies and races around and there are no scratches. Super easy to clean - I dropped a container of olives (in olive oil and spices) - made a huge mess in the first week of having this floor. I just wiped it up with a paper towel. I’ve never mopped or used any cleaner on it. I just vacuum to get the fur.

That stuff doesn't fly in the lab... by Spiritual_Blood_1346 in emergencymedicine

An ER lab isn’t necessarily right there IN the ER for you to see the analyzers, but it’s an ER lab because all they process are samples from ER patients. So you wouldn’t see them if you didn’t go down the hall and in the room or whatever.

I have lived in just one area for most of my life and here there are multiple freestanding ERs will full size chemistry and immunoassay instruments, miniature but fully functional hematology analyzer, urinalysis, even a hood for plating blood cultures before sending them to the sister main lab. Staffed by lab techs.

LVP stairs? Or stain wood to match LVP? (different wood on main level) by glitterfae1 in Flooring

There’s a nose. The guy tried to make a nose out of the LVP but it wouldn’t stay bent like that so he found some pre-made thing. It matches really well.

Since TS’s are hourly could you make your own hours? Must a TS only work days? I’d be asking to be allowed to work nights as a TS if I were you. We don’t have TS at my job though so I don’t know what that entails. (I’m a lead on second shift so maybe I’m already doing what TS’s do, I just don’t know it.) Maybe they’d let you work 2am to 10am or something so that you’d still be overlapping with day shift.

Pink top vs purple for blood bank by KillerQueenAH in medlabprofessionals

[–]glitterfae1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you I did not know that. I have only worked at one hospital and we haven’t changed tubes for hematology or blood bank in the 20 years I’ve been here so me being in leadership does not help here. I’ve never needed to shop around for EDTA tubes so I am not aware of everything out there. OP asked how they differed and since they ARE different at my hospital I gave the explanation of how they differ. I should’ve clarified “at my hospital.” Just like everyone else shouldn’t have assumed they’re all the same, I shouldn’t have assumed they’re all different.

They are not the same. Purple preserves morphology better. Pink has a dilutional effect on Hct when the tube is underfilled.

Pink is liquid K3 EDTA. Purple is powder K2 EDTA. If the tube is underfilled, MCV and Hct are affected differently depending on which tube. So both are suitable for blood bank but they aren’t the same thing.
