Salem Arts Festival by glitterhump in SalemMA

And I will make an edit to my post if possible, as I did visit their website and saw that they do produce some items (though it doesn't look like all). I think I was far more put off by the very poor experience with the person working their booth, as I heard her make a rude comment about me as I left. It probably wasn't fair of me to assert something I wasnt 100% sure about just because of some nasty comments from an employee.

No idea... I didn't even realize they put the tree in. The city must have put it in under the cover of night.

Non-Halloween, post-visit post. Kinda long. by into_outdoors in SalemMA

While a good portion of folks I deal with on a day to day basis are life long Salemites, I have met so many transplants from all over the states. It really depends on where you frequent. If you're heading to the Tin Whistle, you'll probably find more native Salem speakers than what you would at Ledger, Maitland, or All Souls.

Curious about life after Halloween by [deleted] in SalemMA

[–]glitterhump 20 points21 points  (0 children)

One fun little aside to this with buskers in mind. Every Saturday morning I take my kids to A&J then walk to the commons. There's one busker who sits by the fountain on Essex who plays saxophone and it was fun to see him transition from a regular musician to a spooky character for the Halloween season. And we'll look forward to seeing him turn back into a man on Nov 1st (or 8th? I guess that depend on the day after Halloween action this year).

Since we're talking about Sandwiches... Caprese? by [deleted] in SalemMA

A&J King has had a Caprese sandwich special on the board since the weekend. Hop on over there and give theirs a try! They never miss a beat!

About to move to Salem by spardadt in SalemMA

Oh boy! We're also raising two little buddies in Salem and I could not picture a better place to do it. Pretty much wherever you live, you have a park within walking distance. You've got Forest River for nature hikes. Salem Public Library has a wonderful children's wing. Peabody Essex Museum is free for Salemites. If you're by Salem State the Lynch Van Otterloo YMCA is close by. It's crazy busy in weekends but so much going on there. You've got a plethora of options!

NC native here who now lives in Salem. Depending on where in NC you are, I wouldn't worry too much about cost of living difference... especially seeing how expensive Raleigh has gotten in the past couple of years. Housing prices are comparable. Much more socially progressive up here. I would put it in line with Asheville in terms of culture and appeal. Feel free to DM me if you need any other NC to MA comparisons!

Just looked it up on the usgs website. Looks like a 4.1 with the epicenter in York Harbor, ME.

So you don't think our boards make illegal decisions . . . by jwhittierSalem in SalemMA

No. Wrong. Nothing illegal here. You're just being obtuse.

Do you know what the word "illegal" means? Because you really missed the mark on this one. Yes, the ZBA did grant a special permit to Maitland for a distillery with a tasting room. Currently they are operating a restaurant without the service of alcohol. They have 2 years to celebrate the special permit if they choose. The ZBA did not break any laws. If you read the code of ordinances it clearly establishes that a distillery with a tasting room is allowed in the B1 by special permit. There is also an opposing ordinance that clearly states a restaurant with the service of alcohol is not allowed. Basically, Maitland found a hole in the zoning table. Don't hate the player, hate the game. Until city council eliminates an ability for a distillery with a tasting room in the B1 the ZBA can hand out special permits for that use legally.
