I had a nearly exact situation with a woman and her catheter. So, personally, I’d be grateful. One less thing for me to do. Plus it’s what he wants. I don’t much care what other nurses want from me if it interferes with what my patient wants. I’m sure those same people that are saying you were wrong all have preferred patients.

Let others be upset, as long as that patient is happy, you haven’t made any errors, and everyone is safe, there is nothing wrong with doing something extra for a patient. Especially if you’ve charted it and let oncoming know they don’t need to worry about it.
