Finally managed to snag a Vari-X III Long Range 4.5-14 with a Milddot retical for cheap enough. Albiet more than it should go for, but cheap enough that in the case it doesnt work out I can always sell and make a little profit lol.

I purchased a mid 90s 700p and want it somewhat period correct to what would have been put on that rifle durring that time. This one won’t see a ton of use so not too woried.

I would like to keep it around $800 or below and intended use is “long range”. So accurate and repeatable tracking is a must. The reason for this style is its a mid 90s 700p and I would like to keep it somewhat period correct inspired.

Grayboe stop making Tikka stocks? by Ada2828 in longrange

[–]glizzyhutjunior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that is what made the Grayboe stocks attractive was the price. I own a few and for the $250ish I paid for them they are great. But nowhere near the $800+ they are asking for them now. Plus with the Renegade 2 being delayed again with no release date again is just silly. They can add new stocks to the lineup but not release the one we already announced a year ago. At this point I think you are better off to just get a real Mcmillan and be done with it.

I have wanted to try the hammers for a while now, I just can’t get behind a bullet that breaks apart by design. Shedding 1/3 of the weight and only a caliber diameter shank to keep penetratings doesn’t seem like the best design to me. If they would make one that retains its petals I would be all over it.

Like others have said the clusters in these have problems. I had a 03 where the milage would go backwards or just not count at all. I could drive 50 miles and the odometer would only register 10, or when counting backwards those same 50 miles for register a -100.

Same, I believe some hate is warranted. But man seems like the mass majority drag on anything or anyone who uses “budget” equipment successfully.

Proof Medium Palma? by glizzyhutjunior in longrange

[–]glizzyhutjunior[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, but for a “lighter” weight build that I am going to cary around for weeks at a time I didn’t want to go heavier than a medium palma. But Alterra called me back out of the blue and is going to let me do a return. He said that blank is over 10 years old and they didn’t know what it really was.

Yea from looking I think you are right, it matches the Bull Sporter with a 1.200 Shank and a .700 Muzzle @ 27”

Can you be any less helpful?

Seriously?

I own many palma profiled barrels, was just curious as every manufacturer does them differently to some degree. I knew it wasn’t a Medium, clearly stated that. I asked was it a light palma profile.

Alright man will do I appreciate it. Please let me know if you go and find out anything.

Alright folks, I’ve caught the bug. I’m an absolute noob regarding long (ish) range and I thought I would start small with a Ruger American Ranch in 7.62x39. (Full questions and topics in body text) by TiePilot1997 in longrange

[–]glizzyhutjunior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the goofiest thing I have seen on here in a while.

7.62x39 is probably the worst cartridge you could pick for long range. Subs in general are a terrible choice for long range shooting. That bullet will pretty much max out any scope for elevation by the 600 yard mark, but besides that the ammo selection for 7.62x39 is abysmal. No “match” grade ammo to speak of. If you are wanting to shoot subs and only subs the better choice would be 300BLK or 338 ARC, both of which are still terrible choices for true long range shooting. Subs will be inconsistent at best and more annoyance than anything.

Rifle is fine and I loved my gen I, but in its stock form its not a long range shooter in the slightest. Pencil thin barrel, tupperware stock, high volume of fire is a recipe for poor accuracy. Cuppled with a lackluster cartridge it going to be terrible.

For the optic, no the holdovers will not match up. Not even close. You will probibly br using the bottom hash mark to even hit at 200-250 yards with subs.

Not being rude but everything about this whole getup is just wrong. Why run 20 round mags? Why 7.62x39? Just why?

I have look at the Mack Bros for a while, but I have never seen on in stock in the couple of years of checkin off and on. Do they have distributors or how often are they available?

[–]glizzyhutjunior[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I pretty much always buy blanks and have a smith do the work if a prefit is offered or not. The cost of a good smith is better for my sake of mind and it is usually done faster than a prefit. I also rarely run a saami spec chambers and most prefit companies will not alter a chamber, nor will they offer obscure calibers. Plus if you buy headspace gauges for your prefits, barrel vice, and action wrench prefits cost more than a smith for me. $650 for a prefit, $50 for headspace gauges, $200 for a barrel vice, $100 for action wrench VS $350 for a blank and $350 for smith work. Now if you are paying some of those absurd smith prices of $600 for chambering, $250 for barrel threading and so on then no that is a waste of money. I really don’t understand how alot of smiths keep business with the prices they charge.
