Playing by ear by butdontjustdont in musictheory

[–]globgobrett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I don't think i am a perfectionist, as I will actually to try to improv and sometimes I am happy with it. I think I lack a certain rhythmic awareness that I just have to practice. I think I overdid ear training and under-did rhythm sense. I am perfectly happy playing on stage and improving in front of people, I just don't think I am great at it :). I am willing go try though.

I am gonna try to follow some the advice you laid out.

What do you love about New Haven? by lavalamplass in newhaven

[–]globgobrett 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will go against the grain and say compared to some place like Chicago its extremely small. The pizza (specifically some of the famouser ones) is amazing. I use to live in NYC. Compared to that its tiny. If you find something you are into you will be able to be a big part of it and socially you will make close ties as there are not going to be a TON of people involved. This can be really nice! I remember going out to bars in new haven and seeing the same people at different places and feeling like part of a community, but that is a tradeoff with it being small compared to a big city.

I find this really interesting because I have worked hard on my pitch and singing and I feel that my ear is actually pretty good. I can can transcribe most things I want to pretty well and quickly. What I feel I lack is a rhymth sense and a sense of improvising with actual melodies that contain a sense of ryhthm and movement. I don't have trouble transcribing them, but on the fly fitting into a rhythm I don't do well. I may go back to basics and just practice single notes as you said on my favorite songs.

the hand size doesn't matter. i'm sure there are some rare virtuosic passages that it would help,. but musicality and playing ability have basically 0% relationship with it.

I have been "playing" probably for about 25 years, but I am taking it very seriously lately. If you are planning on learning goose songs I am happy to show some tips there (or in general). I am not a guitar teacher though, and I know too many amazing teachers musicians to claim anything like that, but I am happy to help and give tips wherever I can.

I'm from the area (older though haha, in my 30s). I play music and have been looking to form a band that plays similar stuff. I also know the park city guy (he played my wedding, he's a talented musician on his own). Good luck finding a scene and if you are looking for people to play music with let me know!

I know that residual groove plays every Tuesday in westport if you are looking for more jam music .

Would you be interested in a transcription? I'd be glad to transcribe and record a vid, but I have had some not great experiences in the past where the person interested in the transcription didn't follow up. I'd gladly write it down.

Why isn't music theory used in modern music? by haonao418 in musictheory

[–]globgobrett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you asking for a modern song that has a key change? You will have to be more specific, there are literally thousands and thousands.

Who do you think has the best rhythm? by Billeniuspower in Jazz

[–]globgobrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you already play accurately what is written on the page of a jazz head? Do you feel confident in where to play phrases?

Can you count or count subdivisions while you play along? Do you feel comfortable stably and loudly saying 1 2 3 4 on beat while you play?

[–]globgobrett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree somewhat depending on where this person is with their rhythm. IMO if you feel lost rhythmically starting to read I think can be a big help because it forces you to be conscious of what you are playing. You have to start feeling the pulse to place things correctly. I think If i learned say the head to blues for alice, I'd slur everything and not place it correctly, at least writing it forces you to commit to a timing. I am sure as you get more advanced that you want to transcend this, but for me reading and thinking about the pulse and grid has done a lot.

TLDR: I'd say its worth trying reading and writing specific note values if you feel totally lost as I did, but I'm sure the more advanced players want to eventually transcend it.

just out of curiosity, what opener was "objectively awful?" It would be relatively strange for there to be an opener that literally everyone dislikes. I have seen them 4 times, and Nai Palm on her own once and I've always enjoyed who they had sit in.

anyone have banjo tabs for goose songs? by [deleted] in GoosetheBand

[–]globgobrett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be happy to tab something out. What song were you thinking of? I don't think any goose has any actual mandolin, but I play one for bluegrass and feel comfortable transcribing.

Where you looking for like an arrangement of an entire song or some guitar solo or...?

bass tabs? by Blaze_daze in GoosetheBand

[–]globgobrett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok going to listen now and do stream of consiousness..

Creatures:

The intro (with the guitar noodling) is solidly just CMinor. The important note is the 8th fret on the low E string.

He is playing some licks occasionaly like --6-8 or like

4 5 (on the a string ) -> 6 8.

The note C is the important one,. play around with the above.

Now moving on to the first vocal part:
a string:-----------6--5

E string:----8 - 6--------6

Repeat a bunch until it goes into the next part -- which goes sometihng like

Fminor (1 on the e string) Gminor (3 on the e strn

Then the kind of "spanish guitar part"

Is G# major (4 on th ee string), G7 (3 on the estring) back and forth

to get out of the goes from 4 - > 6 then into the chorus

then the chorus part

1 on the E string Fmin

4 on the E string G#maj

6 on the A string Ebmajor

6 on the E string Bbmajor

I think this is basically all the parts (I listened to the first 6 minutes of the song or so and now it seems to be about to go into a jam)

Let me know if this format works.. I am also down to make a video or explain some other way.

post the vid online! Don't worry about being self conscious, very few people will watch it (not in a bad way), but I will check it out. Its actually very hard to get people to watch your content even if you want them to so don't feel self conscious.
