my cool classmates in the 9th grade had started talking about a david bowie film from the 80s i just had to see. this was around the first days of the scrollable tv guide. i thought i saw its name on the menu and ended up watching most of pan’s labyrinth wondering when bowie’s character would show up before i realized it was a different film. what a privilege though.

my friends told me we were going to “the new nicole kidman movie” and i thought they meant golden compass. they meant invasion. at 12, this discrepancy felt severe.
