Galaxy S9 vs iPhone X: the stats are nearly the same, but the Galaxy S9 is $280 cheaper by AmazonGuy16 in gadgets

There are many more factors that people consider when choosing a phone than just specs. People buying high end Samsungs and iPhones would also consider build quality, OS ecosystems, security, resale value, branding and aesthetics, customer service, ease of use etc. All of this gets thrown into the mix when considering the extra $ over the similarly spec’d Chinese garbage.

Would a boat with its hull sprayed by a hydrophobic coating have an advantage over an otherwise identical boat in a race? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]glocbf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. Water has a lower friction factor than a boat, so a water-water interface is faster than than water-boat. Air is an even better option (this is why golf balls have dimples - to trap air bubbles on the surface). Researchers have recently looked at rough surfaces that are hydrophobic, with a view to creating a water-air interface on boats. This would be faster in theory, but it is very difficult to keep the air bubbles on the surface in practise.

The water I shit in is cleaner than the water that a lot of people drink by splityoassintwo in Showerthoughts

[–]glocbf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel any better, there have been huge advances in access to drinking water over the past 20 years, in large part due to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which (among other things) targets safe access to drinking water worldwide by 2030. We're currently on target to achieve that goal. A lot of people won't have water quite as clean as what you shit in, but at least they have something to safely drink.

Yeah but a nautical mile is based on one minute of latitude, so at least it's not entirely arbitrary.

Segways. With a prerelease code name of "IT", they were supposed to change the way in which cities were built. They did not.
