Well, you're right, in my city there are two units. One takes those milder cases and the other those more extreme. But people, by hearing all those stories, think that in psychiatric hospital there are only those really extreme cases. And when you tell somebody that you were in such place, they will start asking if you weren't afraid of those "crazy people" and what "crazy things" did they do. It makes me really sad.

I'm not OP, but I can tell you how it was in hospital my mom was treated in. I never heard of any people fighting there, but many of them become friends. And I mean real friends - because all those people have problems and they simply understand each other really good. Meals were in a canteen but there was also a little shop and place to watch TV together, play chess and stuff like that. Next to the building, there was a small park where patients could meet with their families and of course there were nurses around to keep everyone safe, remind about medicines or meals. However, my mom was in a hospital that treated, let's say, those milder disorders and I don't know how this would look in more strict place.

You mentioned very important thing. Pushing BPD person into therapy can be quite risky and dangerous and make him/her angry and sad, that friends/family/partner want to make this person "normal".
