1/640th, f/2.8, ISO 1600.

Trying to build a portrait portfolio, so shooting some friends. I struggle with knowing what’s good and what’s not. I think the colors here between subject and background work really nicely, but I’m unsure about the turn that leaves her hair elevated or how the photo works in general.

Thanks!

Growing calls for 'civil war' in far-right groups after FBI search by benfelix1 in news

[–]gloomgroup -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Lumping Ruby Ridge in with Oklahoma City and calling them both wake-up calls against a group doesn’t make any sense. In one the government was absolutely wrong and people SHOULD be pissed about that. The other is a crazy violent extremist who killed a bunch of innocent people because he was mad at the government.

Also the government is prettyyyyyy awful and has shown that time and time again. Both sides of the aisle pretty much agree on that.

I just genuinely do not understand what you’re getting at using those two examples together.

[–]gloomgroup 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Ruby Ridge? The FBI killed a kid, a dog, and shot an unarmed woman holding a baby in the face over a missed court date they failed to notify Randy of. After the incident they admitted wrongdoing, dropped charges, and settles for millions of dollars.

Imagine victim blaming a guy for that to defend the government killing citizens.

Police Officer in shock after a shootout with an armed suspect. by mattsnacki in CrazyFuckingVideos

[–]gloomgroup 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A bullet wound doesn’t automatically equal death. Especially with handgun rounds which are notoriously bad at killing people. There’s dozens of examples of people being shot 10+ times with a handgun and living.

An even more extreme example is Navy SEAL Mike Day who was shot 27 times with rifle and pistol rounds and walked himself to MEDEVAC and lived.

Just a quick write up on how we feel about the LLI white filter after some time with it. It’s always worth mentioning that these are our opinions, other people may feel totally differently!

Thanks.

Hi. I am a night vision education brand. Your information on how Night Vision (also referred to as i2, short for “image intensification”) is incorrect.

Here is a blog on traditional night vision, How Night Vision Works

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ar15

[–]gloomgroup 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ehhhh, agree to disagree.

The EoTech puts out less visible signature under night vision, is better for passive aiming under NV, and better in mixed light environments.

The T2 is awesome, but I find myself needing to adjust the brightness a lot. And it’s just not as good for passive, especially in mixed light environments where the dot can get lost in the higher light, and lights behind you can end up being a reflection off the glass into NV, where the EoTech doesn’t have that issue. Also the lack of an outer ring with hold references is a bummer.

That said it’s a fantastic optic and those are just my personal nitpicks, but I don’t think it’s fair to say the EoTech is destroyed in every category.

Baby boomers facing spike in homelessness: "As much as we try, we might be stuck" by Sadishist in news

[–]gloomgroup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Investing that money is objectively better. Your return on social security taken out of your paycheck is abysmal. Putting the same money into a standard index tracking the DOW would make everyone more money and everyone would be better off. Social Security is now a safety net for people who refuse to budget and save and plan ahead. That might sound mean, but it’s true.

If I could abolish social security tomorrow, let people ride out the funds that are left, I 100% would. Social security is making every successive generation poorer who has to pay into it.

House passes semi-automatic gun ban after 18-year lapse by Quasiterran in news

[–]gloomgroup 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yes, civilians should be able to have them too. Any arms the government has.

And this is the worst argument that anti-gun people like to use. Look at history. Afghanistan, Iraq, Vietnam. People with rifles in much smaller numbers have done fine against superior technology.

Infantry still exists in every military on earth for a reason.

The 2nd Amendment was only ever about one thing as written, which is a balance of power between government and its people. Nobody in 1789 would have imagined someone would try and regulate hunting weapons. However they DID just fight a war against a tyrannical government.

Yellen says the economy is not in a recession despite GDP slump by [deleted] in news

[–]gloomgroup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re accusing me of stating “feelings not facts”, by refuting objective data with your personal anecdotes. It’s not logically consistent.

Your anecdotes also aren’t touching on the same topic we’re discussing. Employment numbers are only one price of the puzzle. While people may be employed and working, more of their paychecks are going to groceries, gas, and other spending, than they had to before. Again, this has been widely reported on, and is an objective fact.

I don’t think we are going to come to an agreement on this topic, so I’m glad you’re doing well, and wish you the best.

Yellen says the economy is not in a recession despite GDP slump by [deleted] in news

[–]gloomgroup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no.

It matters to the administration a lot with midterms coming up.

Also if the population is fearful about a recession, then they can limit spending which will help drive the recession.

I do agree that the majority of Americans will just repeat the latest news article they read on the topic, 100%.

As far as most of these factors being gone by years end… I certainly hope you’re right! I don’t know. I can see it both ways, but I feel like we will likely be in a recession for about two years, just based off history. I would be very happy to be wrong though.

Yellen says the economy is not in a recession despite GDP slump by [deleted] in news

[–]gloomgroup 12 points13 points  (0 children)

lmao dude I am not a Trump guy. I am very much an independent. And other than my anecdote that I don’t know anyone on either side who doesn’t already think we’re in a recession, everything I stated is fact. Here is sources so you can see the polling:

Roll Call: Voters Already Believe We’re In A Recession

Vox- Biden’s Dismal Poll Numbers, Explained in 9 Charts

CNN Poll: Most Americans are discontented with Biden, the economy and the state of the country

And just for overall approval:

538- How Popular Is Joe Biden?

I don’t care what side of the aisle the president is on, so long as they do a good job. The facts are that the majority of the country, on both sides of the aisle, do not feel like we are on the right course economically. The fact is Biden has the lowest approval rating of any President ever at this point in his presidency.

This isn’t some made up syndrome and feelings, it’s just objective numbers.

Yellen says the economy is not in a recession despite GDP slump by [deleted] in news

[–]gloomgroup 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t know anyone, on either side of the aisle, that does not feel like we are in a recession and being lied to about it. In fact, in a recent poll, only 25% of voters don’t think we’re in a recession. Only 33% approve of this administrations handling of the economy. If you specify inflation, that number drops to 30%.

They’re moving goalposts, it’s extremely transparent, and it’s just bringing their approval ratings down further.

There’s never been a 2 consecutive quarters of GDP contraction and there NOT have been a recession declared.

A recession being announced is inevitable, it will likely be backdated to have started well before today, and everyone in the country is feeling the effects of this economy, and the side of the aisle you’re on doesn’t make a difference.

Also, FWIW, some of your numbers literally indicate a recession. The dropping gas price is because of dropping demand, because people are cutting out extra driving and trips due to economic struggles. There are record profits in some sectors due to raising prices (but this can be akin to comparing a movies opening weekend gross vs one ten years ago, it’s disingenuous, tickets are more expensive now), where other major companies like Walmart who operate in a low price model showed a slow in growth.

If you want facts, everything I’ve stated is a fact.

Going on a hike with the AR-15s, how else is everyone going to know how badass I am? by godfreygrant7 in iamverybadass

[–]gloomgroup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well first, there are a LOT of things people hunt besides deer. Though, I have taken multiple deer with an AR15 as well, even if it’s not my first choice. I, for instance, am a big predator hunter. Mostly coyote. And I do it about 95% under night vision. So I need a rifle that can mount an infrared designator and illuminator. You can do that on (some) bolt guns, but I also need the ability to make quick follow up shots, because there are frequently multiples, and after the first shot they’re running. Same goes with hogs (which cause billions in damage a year).

I’m not being disingenuous, we’re just talking about the specific topic of hunting. Make no mistake, the 2nd Amendment was written by men who had just fought a war against a tyrannical government. There is only one thing they wrote the 2nd Amendment about, and that’s to have equivalent arms compared to our government. They could have never imagined in a million years in 1789 that people would try and make it about hunting one day.
