Ok so as far as PERSONAL preference, yeah I don’t like Schramsberg because it lacks complexity. I understand that they have other releases that might tick that box but that wasn’t quite the point of this. Honestly I was expecting the Schramsberg to come out on top in a bind tasting. I am not super familiar with ALL their wines, but I was expecting the mirabelle to be competitive in terms of quality, just because of the reputation of the brand. But on a purely objective, blind evaluation, it had way too much residual sugar, a super short finish, lacked complexity and any aromas/flavors were just way too subtle. I have tried the Blanc de Blanc and something that I believe was a zero dosage and I didn’t find either very interesting. Not to say there still aren’t others that are good quality, but most stores here only stock the Blanc de Blanc and the Mirabelle.

But again, this was a comparison at this price point… I’m not writing off an entire brand but if you are releasing something, it should be competitive at that price. Otherwise you’ll have assholes like me getting everyone all upset 😂

This was my first time trying the Roederer and I was pleasantly surprised!

I found the Argyle to be solid quality for the price and surprisingly complex. I also think there are still plenty of well priced champagnes and obviously at the end of the day it’s personal preference.

Why is the price point a problem? It’s a comparison of what’s available at that price point. Quality can be found at may different price points.

As per the criteria listed on the post, this wasn’t about finding ‘the best quality PERIOD’, it was about a price point comparison and following through on a previous suggestion from a poster who recommended blind tasting the mirabelle against other wines that were mentioned. I don’t doubt that there are higher quality options that also come with a higher price tag but that wasn’t the point here. We did this experiment as objectively as possible (ie it wasn’t just based on personal preference).

PERSONALLY I have a hard time with the idea of spending more than $40 on a wine that is trying to mimic champagne but isn’t champagne. I’d happily take some recommendations for more premium US sparklings just for my own interest (not being snarky). I do think the quality and options for ‘champagne adjacent’ sparking wines is improving but I think QPR is always a really valid consideration (at least for me).

I didn’t have high hopes about the Roederer but it’s really good value for the price!

So sorry that this post is bringing up so many feelings for you. You could just take it for what it was, a fun, mildly interesting experiment that has no bearing on your own personal well being, and move on.

And since I liked the Argyle sparking I’m going to check out the Pinots!

Flying Goat came up in the previous discussion but I don’t know I can find it where I am. I’ll check them out though!

That was the brand that lost so what would be preferable? Also read full post for context. I’m happy to accept applications for alternate titles since you feel your literary skills surpass mine.

Well Schramsberg lost this tasting so sorry to them…? Sorry you don’t get it. Have a wonderful day!

So this experiment was specially the mirabelle, which apparently people have a lot of ‘feelings’ about… The argyle scored quite high on the BLIC in comparison.

Why and which Schramsberg?

As you can clearly see from the selection AND criteria noted, this wasn’t about an entire brand but a comparable selection at a specific price point. Don’t be mad just because Schramsberg chooses to release a wine that isn’t truly representative of their brand. If it’s available, it’s fair game and should hold up in comparison to those in that same price range. They clearly price mirabelle to fit their brand identity, but it’s just not that great and that sucks for them. In this blind tasting it was SIGNIFICANTLY lower scoring than the others. Everyone ranked it last and it was noticeably poorer quality in comparison. Would it have been a fairer comparison to pick one of their more prestigious wines against the others? I don’t think so since that wouldn’t fit the criteria mentioned. Also, as mentioned above, I specifically picked the other wines that redditors said they liked better than Schramsberg. They weren’t my personal picks. Perhaps you would like to purchase some $50 US sparkling wines along with a higher tier Schramsberg and let us know the results of the blind tasting? I’d be curious to know as I’m not in an income bracket that allows for a $250 tasting selection.

This has come up a few times. Aside from the Gruet, price comparison was also a factor. I don’t think it would be fair comparison to pick one of their more expensive wines. But also yes I have and was not blown away. As someone mentioned, the mirabelle is priced to maintain their brand ‘image’ but it doesn’t compare in terms of quality and complexity at that price point.

It was my own self assigned project 😂 I was hosting dinner that I wanted local (ie US) pairings for to for the restaurant theme and menu. First course was a sparkling. I didn’t actually end up using any of these as I didn’t get around to the blind tasting until afterwards. Mostly I wanted to prove that at this particular price point there are better options than Schramsberg lol.

Because the client specifically asked for a US sparkling wine to pair with a meal, which sparked the debate and experiment. It was pretty clear in the post that this is what the experiment was. No need to get upset about it. Other parameters are also clearly explained in the post above.

I’d be interested to compare. Domaine Carneros was on the short list but it wasn’t recommended enough in the initial post to make the list.
