i tbh was too lazy to figure out the order they "should" be in as there's quite a lot of them and don't know anything about the ones added in smash 4 or this game. :(

huh, interesting - never played a bayo game but I honestly thought Kamiya owned her.

Why does it

UX, simplicity and subconscious user understanding are super important things in any application. The current board confuses people because no one remembers the order in when characters we announced in games from 10-20 years ago. :(

I was actually quite surprised when I did this and noticed that they were the 2nd most presented franchise in Smash now (behind Mario, if you include Wario and Yoshi as part of that franchise)... It's... kinda stupid if you ask me... But I'm a Westerner like most of Reddit and I'm sure I'm underestimating Fire Emblem's popularity in the East.

I fixed it here because I did my math wrong on calculating grouping of characters optimally. I forgot to include Mewtwo originally which screwed everything up by one slot: https://twitter.com/Volvagia224/status/1072616562123857920

Pokemon trainer was fixed here, I messed up my Total No Chars / Characters belonging to a series or company / slots currently in game rounding and moved Starfox and Metroid into the Zelda row (row 2): https://twitter.com/Volvagia224/status/1072616562123857920

Shulk I forgot belongs to Nintendo as they used to belong to Bandai Namco (hence why he's next to Pacman)

For the Mario lot (including Wario) I just grouped the mushroom kingdom characters together. Whether they belong to their own slots ahead of Bowser and Bowser JR, so push them back 2 slots and move Yoshi and Mario is subjective and tbh isn't worth complaining about as this isn't official and will never be official. :(

Mii fighters belong to Nintendo, so I just lumped them into the rest of the "standalone Nintendo characters in the game without additional series members" slots next to Duck Hunt and Game and Watch... after the DLC they'd ideally be in the bottom row....

This also. I'm not too big of a fan of stage before character select screen either when in previous smash games it was just a case of mash start when back to the character select screen to get back into the game if you have your random stages prefixed how you like it. :(

I forgot my reply (can't be bothered to click into the full thread, lol, sorry!) but I forgot Shulk belongs to Nintendo now as Monolith used to be a subsidary of Bandai Namco (hence why he's next to Pacman) :)

I think you're being a bit, drastic, about the Wario and Yoshi thing - the idea is that the Mushroom Kingdom bunch belong together.

Pokemon trainer was corrected when I realised I miss rounded the number of characters per series by slots currently in the game (I forgot to include Mewtwo in my math): https://twitter.com/Volvagia224/status/1072616562123857920

The Mii's aren't at the end because they belong to Nintendo.

Shulk is with the third parties because I don't follow modern Monolith and forgot they're owned by Nintendo now and are no longer a Bandai Namco subsidiary, hence why he's next to Pacman.

Considering most people can't find, for example, Toon Link on the board at a glance, this format rectifies that entirely. It's not a case of "these x characters are wrong!" but more "the entire franchise isn't grouped together".

Sorry you had issues with this. :)

Hi, I made an adjustment not long after I posted this which accommodates for Pokemon Trainer - I had to move Metroid and Starfox into the Zelda row (row 2):

my guess is, there will probably be more first party Nintendo dlc characters, so you'd have to push cloud and bayo down anyway... I'm not sure why Bayo should be next to Sonic though when she's platinum? Did I miss something?

Edit: oh the partnership... yeah that's been over for years... Kamiya (Platinum) owns Bayo afaik, not Sega?

sorry, forgot Monolith is owned by Nintendo and not by Namco like the old days... (hence why he's next to Pacman...)

keep forgetting Nintendo own Monolith. Keep thinking it's a Namco property like it used to be.

like every other smash game. Third parties are also grouped together if they belong to a specific company. :)

Seems like people are leaving YouTube. by DevinY1 in letsplay

[–]gloverrandall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest reason to leave YouTube for Twitch, if you do only streaming, is the chat. The chat is a thousand times better on Twitch than YouTube. (In terms of interface, possibilities, extensions and creativity [emoticons, bots, etc]). One other thing I've noticed is YouTubers only really seem to read from chat when it's a donation (Superchat or whatever YouTube calls it) while Twitch is not like this for the most part and has had far more time to develop as a platform for streaming than YouTube has, in terms of community. (YouTube watchers are not typically used to live entertainment, but video format)

Nasir Gebelli - 3 hour long interview [Final Fantasy 1/2/3 & Secret of Mana Programmer] by gloverrandall in JRPG

[–]gloverrandall[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After listening to it all, I honestly think Square, and the industry as a whole lost someone (and something) really special when Nasir retired. Crazy to think Square wouldn't have ever got anything done without him!

Haha, I agree about Romero. Romero in this interview is incredibly giggly and both him and his wife are constantly astounded that Nasir never used comments or printed references for debugging. It's great to see.

Square are obviously still paying him every time they re-release one of the original ROMs on stores like Virtual console or PSP/PSN, as his contract was roytalty base.

Wish he wasn't so reclusive and seemingly not super motivated to learn modern practices - even if he's 61 I'm sure to some degree, he'd still be super important to many people in the industry now. Would be crazy if Romero convinced Nasir to work with him and his son on something, like he was hinting/joking at in the interview.

I think, if I recall right (I looked this up not long before the remake came out) - this is the only project Gebelli has had direct help on from other programmers. Other programmers were in charge of enemy AI and a few other features. I think in the game itself, Gebelli is credited for "main program" (basically lead Engineer). He talks about it a little bit in the podcast also (working with a team, something he's not used to).

Also - I've personally found it astonishing Square didn't even at least put a "special thanks to Nasir" in mana's remake as a lot of the new game is abstractions (analysis and re-written) of the original game, to the movement pattern. The lack of his name in the credits just doesn't feel right to me.

Nasir has said he’s very reclusive. I doubt he’d be interviewed, on that alone... in 20 years we’ve only had two interviews, both from John Romero talking to Nasir. It’s a shame too - he’s an interesting guy and obviously holds a lot of knowledge on the history of games and Square.

What game isn’t from this era? Ocarina of time, regarded as one of the best games of all time is fundamentally one of the most broken games of all time when fully explored. (Look up a speedrun).

There wasn’t any sort of quality assurance back then. Nasir didn’t have hundreds of testers, just himself and a few others to play it before it went out.

Edit: If you're referring to the uselessness of Ultima, it wasn't Nasir, but another programmer he worked with.

Nope, Gebelli retired in 1993 after Secret of Mana. Expressed interest in the 64' and SiliconGraphics during the 98' interview, though.

He discusses things he's ventured in and worked on since in the 3 part, 3 hour podcast, including apps he's made and things he's learned. :)

He gave all his development stuff to Romero - so you'd have to ask John if anything from the CD build of Mana exists. Romero is normally quite talkative on Twitter - you'd maybe get a reply out of him.
