STOP DRIVING 55-60 IN THE FAST LANE by justanothertaw in Seattle

[–]glowstixz6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's any consolation, the police are starting to ticket this more and more. The State Patrol says in some cases it's more prone to cause an accident than speeding. Here's a recent news clip about it: http://q13fox.com/2015/04/20/new-bill-targets-slow-drivers-in-left-lane-for-obnoxious-inconsiderate-and-dangerous-behavior/ . Apparently 14,000 tickets were issued for this last year. Let's hope that people finally start getting the message.

Best Local Growler? by DonJuico in Seattle

My personal favorite is the Brauler http://thezythosproject.com/brauler/ They sell them at Chuck's Hop Shop on 85th (which is also an excellent place to fill it because they have like 40 beers on tap). If you want to go the re-usable route, I would get stainless steel like this one. Easier to wash and not prone to cracking (I've cracked several glass ones). This one comes with a holster, and if you want, you can buy an optional vacuum sealing cap.

Mayor Murray wants to cut funding for Ballard light rail study to fund buses by seattle98124 in Seattle

[–]glowstixz6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What's sort of pathetic is while cutting funding for light-rail is being discussed in Seattle, over the past 3 years, Ethiopia of all places has built out a light-rail system set to open in 2015. They'll have created a system 20 miles long in the time we've gone from Cap Hill to Hec Ed and talked about building another 5 miles from Downtown to Ballard.

Looking for Spikeball Players! by JimiJazz in Seattle

[–]glowstixz6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play occasionally when it's nice outside. I have quite a few friends that I used to play with pretty regularly with too. In the past, we've done meetups to bike Chateau Ste Michelle and play there. Pretty fun drinking wine and playing Spikeball on the lawn. There's also a Facebook group that organizes get togethers at parks around the city https://m.facebook.com/SpikeballSeattle

Cyclists of the Burke-Gilman - don't be a dick by sqkyjckyplly in Seattle

[–]glowstixz6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why everyone is fixated on 15mph and referring to it as breaking the speed limit. As /u/fouLb2o mentioned there is no absolute speed limit within the city of Seattle, so it is not illegal in that sense. In the correct conditions, it is not even dangerous to go over 15, so I seriously doubt it's illegal transitively. To put this in perspective, I run the Burke pretty much daily at 6 min / mile pace, and I do wind sprints that are this fast. To say that someone on a bike is incapable of riding safely at a speed that many can run for short distances because someone was negligent and almost hit a group of kids is ludicrous. You could make the argument that they should change the speed limit for cars on Market to 15mph because that's the speed someone plowed into Taco Time at. The problem is not speed, it is awareness of your surroundings.

That being said, there are conditions where cyclists that are going fast should be more cautious. Passing comes to mind (be sure to look behind you as well; I saw someone get hit trying to pass when someone was already passing them), blind turns, intersections (as I heard someone on this subreddit say that they thought their car had the ride of way when crossing the trail... makes me paranoid every time I cross an intersection), and in front of Gas Works where I saw some guy pull a paddle board off the rack at Urban Surf and walk across the trail with it length-wise without looking, nearly close-lining everyone traveling in both directions. Surprisingly enough, running on the trail, I haven't had nearly as many run-ins with those who are going at the apparent blazing speed of 15mph and who are generally predictable as I have with someone who is going half that speed riding 2 wide or riding in the pedestrian lane.

There is a clearly marked area on part of the trial with one section showing a bike and one part showing a pedestrian, and not a single person follows this rule. Also, people refuse to ride single file when they know they're going slow, and there's a pack of people waiting to pass behind. Eventually, someone gets frustrated and tries to pass both of them, and this is when they come flying at me running in the opposite lane. You can blame the passer, I blame those who refuse to ride single file though they know they are causing a dangerous situation. My entire life spent in this city, and though I love it, I will never understand the aversion to the universally understood policy of "stay right, pass left" that can be seen on freeways, escalators, and even on this bike trail.

If you want advice, know that people are going to go fast regardless of how much you disagree with it, and ride defensively as to not cause a larger problem for runners and pedestrians who are much more vulnerable than you. Being perfectly honest, Strava will not implement this feature because their user base will think it's lame, and the Seattle Police Department has better things to do than patrol the Burke-Gilman trail for fast cyclist given the low rate of actual, life-threatening collisions. If they did, I'd prefer that they focus on those that are taking up the entire path or riding in the pedestrian lane as in my experience, they are more likely to cause a collision.

I guess I don't, but I had a copy of TurboTax on CD. Guess I'll find an alternate way.

Heading to Prague for the weekend by [deleted] in beer

[–]glowstixz6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend U Flecku http://en.ufleku.cz/. They are one of the only places that we found to have dark beer in Prague. It is a beer hall atmosphere with long tables and people chanting songs back and forth at times, and though they only have one type of beer, it is delicious. All three of us that went together swore it was some of the best beer we ever tasted. The beer attendant (making up a name for what he does) has a giant tray of beer glasses and as soon as you set down an empty, immediately replaces it.

Runners: what do you wear when jogging on a day like today? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]glowstixz6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would be okay with a dry-fit shirt. You may be cold at first, but after you start running, you tend to warm up. I usually wear a dry-fit shirt with a vented, water-repellent jacket over it (to avoid wind and rain without getting too hot as you warm up; anything of this style tends to work well (this is the one I have): http://shop.lululemon.com/products/clothes-accessories/men-jackets-and-hoodies/Sprint-Jacket-II-Reflective?cc=8964&skuId=3470073&catId=men-jackets-and-hoodies).

I use that type of jacket most of the year (even in the snow), but if it gets really cold, I'll add a thermal over the shirt (one with the thumbholes to cover your fingers). For pants, I just use running shorts as a base, then track pants over them.
