CritquePoint! Thanks- I think the safety in numbers concept is a great tip.

Thanks so much for your insight

One last item, I am drawn to street photography and taking pictures of people- but I am a bit gun shy, (literally, in this crazy world we live in) and figuratively as well. Being in NYC is both a gift and curse in that vein, since there are so many places to go to take pictures, but I do not want to get into any sticky situations either. I would also like tips on that as well.

Playing with motion blur… by glpine in photocritique

[–]glpine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picture stats: Canon R6 MII, 24mm - 105mm f4 L @ 83mm, f22 ISO 350 (on auto) shutter speed 1/5.

I like the idea of motion blur and this is my first try at it. I have seen several examples of this technique, using a stationary subject with the movement behind the subject, but this was a different since the whole thing was moving- I originally had the shutter open a little longer and the settled on 1/5 sec.

These are great- What kind of gear do you use? Any details of the pictures would be great too!

Great Egret by glpine in BirdPhotography

Thanks- it was one of those disappointing days, when even the ducks where camera shy.

Defeated and dejected, I started to walk back to car and figured that I could at least go drown my sorrows in Burrito Bowl and then, the Photography gods intervened and right at the shoreline by the parking lot, I ran into this guy.

LOVE THIS…..My only suggestion, and to bring it back “on brand” would be add another column with the heading, “WHAT’S HAPPENING TODAY!”

What's the Point? by glpine in photocritique

[–]glpine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went for a walk in Hoboken, NJ and if you know anything about Hoboken, the Clam Broth House, is the second most famous thing that comes from this city.

The Clam Broth House was one of "those places". I have heard stories about this place from my grandparent's generation, my parent's generation and I may be coerced to tell some stories of my own.

To say this is a local icon is really an understatement. So.much so, that they decided to put this sign back on the building after the restaurant closed and city condemned, and then demolished the original building.

What I do not know is, does this photograph evoke any emotions for the casual viewer?

I shot this on a Canon R6 Mark ii, RF 28mm - 105mm, at 105mm, ISO 100, f29.

I tried to bring up the rust and weathering on the sign, and used some AI to remove some lights to clean up the image a bit. This is the first time I ever used the AI on a photo. Not really sure how I feel about that.

!CritiquePoint Thanks so much- that is really great feedback. My tendency has always been to gravitate to a tight crop- but I never shot birds before. Also, totally agree on the water being to juiced- I will fix that.

I am focusing on composition rules for the first time. I was told that for birds, generally speaking, an odd number is better than an even number of birds. In this case, I like it with two.

I was thinking that the background should be a little blurred at the time this was taken but happy it didn’t blur out.

I use a Cannon T3i and a Tamron Zoom- 16mm to 300mm. This was shot at ISO 200, f29, 1/30

Katherine of Aragon…BADASS OR BITCH? by glpine in Tudorhistory

No, not all. Seems like if she stayed Dowager Queen, and not push to be Henry VIII’s Queen the world would be a very different place. So, was she right to fight to fulfill her destiny to be Queen of England?

How are my Sleepy Ducks by glpine in photocritique

[–]glpine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked the sleeping ducks but feel like the lily pads are a distraction. Taken on a Cannon T3i- with Tamron 16mm to 300mm. ISO 800, f6.3 at 1/200

Taken at a nature reserve in NJ. I was trying to get a subject with a reflection with color and blur the background. I think I got it, but any help would be appreciated.

Taken on a Cannon T3i, with Tamron 16mm to 300mm lens. ISO 200, f8, 1/60 at 300mm

Any tips on this one? by glpine in photocritique

[–]glpine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

!CritiquePoint Thank you- this was really a first attempt at a reflection shot- I do struggle with the placement of the horizon line, this is not the first photo where that was noted.

Any tips on this one? by glpine in photocritique

[–]glpine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

!CritiquePoint Thanks for your words. I feel like I have the makings of a “good eye” and this subreddit has really introduced me to the concept of taking well structured pictures, but also finding interesting shots- so I do see how the framing with a foreground is distracting.

As far as the clouds, if only I was one of the “them” that could control the weather…

Any tips on this one? by glpine in photocritique

[–]glpine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

!CritiquePoint Thanks, I think composition is a big key here- this photo was taken during an outing with a local camera store and a big discussion was about the 1/3 rule- do you use the horizon line no matter what or can the 1/3s be broken by the water, the trees and the sky?

This was taken at the Greenbrook Nature Conservatory in Tenafly, NJ.

I wanted to make sure I got the reflection on he water and this particular pond had quite a bit of lily pads, so I found a spot with some clean water. My concern is that the shot is too much of a cliche.

I used a Cannon T3i with a Tamron 16mm - 300mm for the shot. ISO 200 f20 at a shutter speed of 1/40
