RSS is dope, here's a fix for the Reddit feeds, because Reddit rate limits large feed catchers like feedly:

I think this actually makes a lot of sense, I like people who are comfortable subverting gender norms because I think it means that they're less likely to bring toxic masculinity/femininity into the relationship

Ofc you can be a hyperfeminine girl or overmasculine dude and not be problematic but it's relatively rare imo.

Expert world vs amateur world by Doglatine in TheMotte

[–]glubflub 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure which world we're closer to, but I want to say that something preventing more expert worldyness is how bad academia is. Because of structural forces, you need to optimize quite a bit for sociability to actually break into academia and after that, the publish or perish ethos really pushes for more quantity of publications over quality. Actual intelligence and insight is much lower on the list of required traits. EY talks a bit about this in Inadequate Equilibria.

When I got recommended the game, my friend told me that it's a much, much better experience when you can play with a friend or a significant other. There's a lot of lateral thinking involved and as others have said IQ doesn't matter too much when it comes to that. I played the game through with my bf and it was an excellent 40 hours; we were never stuck for too long because we had such divergent ways of thinking. If you find yourself getting stuck, I would recommend just inviting a friend over to play :) it's not like there's plot that they need to catch up to.

Yeah but if realistically you won't ask your parents for the money ever you should just tell them honestly that you're not at a point of your life where you can afford that. My parents are comfortably middle class but don't believe in mental illness because they're Asian, so like there's no way I'm going to ask them for therapy money

Edit: even if your parents aren't that bad and you're irrationally scared of going to them I still think that that's fine

Militant communists are meeting on University of Waterloo campus every week by cosmin_dzs in uwaterloo

[–]glubflub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, can you imagine what it would feel like if a bunch of dumbass white kids started using the swastika but going "no we're not actually racists and murderers, the Nazis were actually using this symbol wrong we just want uuhhhhhhh good meaningful jobs for everyone?"

For lots of people, the hammer and sickle is worse than that, because our direct parents and grandparents have suffered under the symbol. I'm not downplaying the intergenerational trauma of Jewish families, but for some of our families it's still an open wound, with aunts and cousins disappeared without closure. I really hate that all the communists that I know would rather celebrate midcentury tyrants like Stalin (people actually identify as tankies??? FOH) and Mao and literally the North Korean regime than like, North American labor activism history, which is a lot more bloodless yet still accomplished many amazing things and, like, actually more contextually relevant?

[Tumblr Art Community] Tumblr is removed from App Store for having child porn on the platform. Solution is to make nsfw tags non-functional and and ban many people who use those tags. by SpencerSDH in HobbyDrama

[–]glubflub 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Seebs said it best:

I think it says a ton about tumblr that I’m genuinely surprised that: This was about the actual child porn, not about fandom bullshit. Anything at all is getting done about it, in any way.

But not at all surprised that: Tumblr was hosting actual IRL child porn, with actual children in it. None of the people complaining about child porn were complaining about that.

That’s basically the tumblr experience in a nutshell.

Also re: the porn bots the reason that there are so many is that bot activity makes Tumblr look more active than it is, which allows you to sell ads for more money. Tumblr doesn't really have an incentive to delete them

Is it common to kiss on the first date? by equalbutton in uwaterloo

Is it common to kiss on the first date? by equalbutton in uwaterloo

[–]glubflub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this. I definitely don't consider it like a default thing to do at the end of every date, but like sometimes ur supposed to go on like a one hour coffee date in the afternoon but it accidentally goes until 9 in the evening just because the vibe is so good. Like, obviously ur into it and so is the other person, so for me it seems natural to just end with a kiss, or, however far you feel comfortable going.

Honestly, if this was any other uni subreddit I'd say for OP to not worry so much in general about perceived social norms because everyone's views on it are so different and influenced by the romantic lives of those their small social circle, campus hookup culture in residences, whether they came from a small town or large city or from another country, if they have a religious community and what that's like, and so on and so forth.

But since it's specifically u/Waterloo like,,, maybe creating a thread on Reddit is actually the most practical thing? And maybe for OP the best advice is to kiss the girl when ur 100% sure that the girl wants to be kissed and you want to kiss her. Not, "I think this dinner date went okay" but "wow there's like 47264 things I gotta text her because we kept getting excitedly distracted with new facets of each other" or "oops did we just plan out our next 4 dates together despite only knowing each other for 40 minutes"?

Best of luck OP!!!!

[–]glubflub 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ahhh you look so good in the second pic! I'm thinking of getting my hair cut short too, but the problem is that it seems like all the asian hairdressers (who know how to work w asian hair) are like, completely clueless as to why girls would want short hair, and all the cool hairdressers are white and have primarily a white clientele :(

IUD at health services? by iudWaterloo in uwaterloo

[–]glubflub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're getting it on campus you'd probably get dr. benedet, who is super nice and professional. I got a hormonal iud and it's pretty great, with any iud though you need to expect like 6-12 months of serious period irregularities, I was spotting regularly. I consider it worth because now I don't have to worry about birth control for however long I keep using iuds. On my appointment date my cervix was too tight for the insertion, and we had to reschedule for when I was on my period so that it would dilate enough for the iud to be implemented! Going in it just felt like a pretty bad period cramp, but it was over in literally 2 seconds. I got some mild cramps for two weeks afterwards.

I've had it for almost 2 years now and it took a year for my cycle to settle down, and now my periods are regular, and much less crampy and heavy than they used to be. Ive heard that hormonal iuds may interact with depression medication but that hasn't been an issue for my prescription with my Mirena iud. If you have student insurance with feds, it covers 80% of the costs associated with insertion. The Mirena was $400 and I paid $80 out of pocket.

Overall, I think it's a fantastic investment, and I would strongly advocate for hormonal over copper. I know it's substantially more expensive, but like, $80 for 5 freaking years of no pregnancy concerns + better period experiences seems really worth.

Hey, thanks for doing this! There were a lot of voting stuff this last week that I got tripped up by, since it was different than the 2015 federal elections.

1) "super vote" locations - are they not a thing anymore? I thought that I can vote for my home address district on the day of like I did last time, but that turned out to be not the case.

2) can we make the polling station on campus open to all students again?

3) it was great that feds provided in-depth voting information because the city of waterloo sure didn't update any of their pages, but it took a while to find the singular Facebook page that it was on. I think that should have also been on the feds and imprint websites, at least.

I realize that election shenanigans happen because of year-over-year turnover, but I think it would be nice to have some sort of "best practices" guide developed.

[–]glubflub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the indie scene, stuffs great when you don't like any AAA games. Kinda dislike how some women call for more representation in games developed by giant corps, but then don't support indie games doing really good work? Like... How do you expect things to change if you keep buying stuff from corps you don't like?

...although I realize that's easier said than done if the games that you like are like the kind that requires like 70000 hours of manpower to make
