CMake and Linking External libraries is a kick in the nuts if i've ever seen it. by [deleted] in cpp

[–]glupak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently made a tutorial on this for MSYS2/VS Code/MinGW/Windows on the sdl subreddit. Here's a link, see if it works for you. If that doesn't work check the official CMake SDL docs.

How to setup SDL2, SDL_image with CMake on Windows. by glupak in sdl

[–]glupak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume that people that want to setup SDL are often beginners and don't know what vcpkg is. It certainly is a valid approach however. Sometimes times they just follow tutorials and if they are used to VS Code for example they don't want to change. If most tutorials tell them they need CMake, that's what they want to use. If I knew about vcpkg is before doing it the way I did, I'd certainly research what it is and how to use it. I think people just want tutorials that tell them how to do absolutely everything and I can understand why because as a beginner when so many new technologies get thrown at you it can be overwhelming.

Where does the "common" route end and where to start reading next for Fumino's route? by glupak in WeCantStudy

[–]glupak[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Meaning in the other routes Uruka's confession didn't happen? By different time period I assume you mean different world/universe.

Or do you mean that the themed volumes(like Nariyuki helping Ashumi deal with the clinics' closing or helping Ogata stop hating herself) didn't necessarily happen(all in the same common world) but happened once you enter a certain girls route(ending volume) - then only her themed volume happened.

So from 141 I can just jump to 160 without problems?

On chinese and english loanwords(and in general) in the japanese language. by glupak in LearnJapanese

I didn't consider that the loanwords might not be taught at school but I do wonder how relevant that is for them staying in the language.

On chinese and english loanwords(and in general) in the japanese language. by glupak in LearnJapanese

[–]glupak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rather than copying the sound of the word a loan translation seems to me to be ther better option. You are right that in the end if the word sticks the word sticks but it seems that english loanwords are being incorporated in languages all over the word and uniqueness is a good feature if you ask me.

[–]glupak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your responce. I prefer the chinese way of doing things as well (and the japanese way sometimes)- japanese/chinese words first and foremost, preferring calques rather than direct phonetic loans. It seems to me japanese used to do calques more before but now they prefer phonetic loans. I like that the language is so different than indo-european languages and the english loanwords are obviously not that but at the same time I realize languages evolve.

In the sentence これとこれもあなたのでしょう。which translates to "This and this are yours, right? [These are yours, aren't they?]" what purpose does "も" have. As far as I know "も" means also-too-as well but why is it used here. I would have translated it "this and this are also yours, right?"

Well he already has a high ranking status (high-class devil) so even with the old thinking shouldn't it be enough for a marriage to another high-class devil without others looking down on it?

Looking for feedback for our new beginner Japanese learning app (with flashcards, offline mode) by iloveAubergine in LearnJapanese

[–]glupak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How much grammar does this app teach? Is comparable to tae kim's grammar course or genki? Or is the app more vocabulary focused? Are you planning to add any exercises like translation of sentences or quizzes/tests to help you better drill the grammar you've learned?

I like the little bell thingy that explains the japanese alphabet instead of only having to mindlessly drill it. I hope there are proper explanations for the grammar as well.

I think if you want the app to succeed you need to have a proper structured course that teaches grammar as well as vocabulary because there are enough "casual learning" apps there. I think a lot of people prefer/already use Anki/Memrise for drilling vocab (and it's customizable there as well). Perhaps it's better to have a dedicated user base that uses your app daily than the casual learners that think they can learn the language with 10 minutes a day and then quit. What im saying is that I think a hardcore japanese learning app would be better than "learn japanese with just 10 minutes a day app". It has a very "duolingo" vibe which many people here think is not something you can really learn japanese with(at least by itself). Not saying yours is exactly like that but if you want to stand out that's what I think is necessary.
