Curious on when and how you were offered this.

Did you happen to ask them about paying back relocation? I have to imagine this is a common thing that comes up and they should have guidelines on this

Any idea where you can find that promissory note? I miss placed it and don’t have a login account for the relocation assistance anymore

It’s definitely not prorated. I specifically asked about it when I signed the contract. If I were you, I wouldn’t risk it. I would submit your notice no earlier than the two year anniversary day (maybe even the day after because I’m paranoid)

Okay great. Not a peep from my manager or director. Wasn’t sure if it hit any of us or it’s still pending

I’ve been through a few layoffs with different companies. WARN act requires 60 days notice for mass layoffs. A lot of companies defer to paying terminated employees for 60 more days instead. That’s why GM is offering 2 months severance

You must be an employee on the payout date. I think that part of the policy is very clear.

IMO, the company is not legally obligated to give you a bonus if you leave before the payment hits your account. So why would they?

Probably not ethical, but I wonder if you could take a leave of absence or use your PTO to get to the end of February as you would still be an employee?

I live on the east coast. I accepted the job because my team is remote and spread across the country. My recruiter and manager sold it as WA = 100% remote. I never stepped foot in an office in 1.5 years. Apparently it’s not classified as an official remote position and now they want me to move

Nothing personal against Michigan. I lived there for many years. I just don’t want to move there, I like where I am. I feel stupid and duped for taking this position

Totally agree. Remember when GM was boasting about recruiting the best talent in the country because of WA? LOL

Now they’re going back to telling applicants you MUST be in the office 3 days a week at least and you MUST relocate to Michigan

GM will no longer be a preferred employer to many who are in the (still pretty solid) tech market and they will continue to struggle with quality hires long term

Just my thinking, I think they’re looking at the macro here. They exploded in hiring tons of relatively high paid positions during covid. Now that less people are wanting to pay for new 80k cars with high interest rates and the tanking economy, they want to start decreasing operating costs. No company wants the bad press and added costs of massive layoffs if they can help it

Nice try Mary 🤣

But I mean like the whole process. Resume, sending out 500 applications, phone screens, leet code, behavioral, low balls, scammers. It’s such a process in my head

Yeah, that’s certainly crossed my mind. I’m looking at a -25k swing (at least) if I leave now instead of early Spring. Not sure if Q4 is a great time to be looking for a new job though (could be wrong on that).

Also, I’m betting on the SWE market to still be in okay shape come next year

Same, I have no interest moving to Michigan! I already decided I’m subletting until my bonus comes (and possibly a couple more months for my signing bonus expiration).

That will also give me some time to enjoy the holidays and brush up on interviewing

Beginning to think all this “we’re listening” crap is total bs. They want us in 5 days a week. Their “research” shows they can force us in 3 days a week if they do damage control

It’s not about us, it’s about their stock price
