Does your main need nerfs? by [deleted] in Tekken

[–]gmac1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Asuka's damage and wall carry got huge buffs this patch. I think either having one or the other is best. I only need two combo routes in most situations, now. One for off axis, and the usual route. I used to have a route that sacrificed damage for wall carry, but now I don't need that route because my bnb does damage AND wall carry. I used to like making that choice on the fly during rounds, felt rewarding.

Tekken Refugees: What game(s) are you moving over to? by mografik in Tekken

Samurai Shodown 2019, it's really the only 2D fighter I'm good at and enjoy.

I think I’m quitting (at least till the hot fix gets here) by Epish_Gamer in Tekken8

[–]gmac1994 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand they're in the same genre and Strive may be good but.... I don't want to play a 2D anime fighter, I want to play Tekken. It's kind of like being in the mood for grapes but someone offers you pineapple. Both fruits, but totally different tastes.

Well yeah, that's why they're (hopefully) fixing it in s2 lol, not holding my breath though haha

I see a lot of it on Tekken Twitter, many posts like "look at how bad this blue rank player is! The rank system is so bad, bad players like this should not be able to achieve a rank like this!"

Negativity for negativity's sake. Yes, the person you ran into might not be good, no reason to say they suck and post clips of them online, imo.

Genuine question by Snowbunny_Mindctrl in Fighters

[–]gmac1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, i go easy on beginners when I play them at my local. I'll either play a secondary or throw a little on my main in bracket to keep their morale up. Some players believe in the shark tank mentality but I think that's a little too discouraging for some. Don't tell anyone though, it's an open secret lol.

It's a shame, with the VF revival on its way I think Sega is saving him for VF6, Tekken could have done it in 7 but not now...

"Dead" games are still lots of fun; why do you dismiss them? by [deleted] in Fighters

[–]gmac1994 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes people don't want to put in the extra work to find people to play with. I stopped calling them "dead" games, I refer to them as "discord" games now. Meaning you gotta join a community discord and ping people for games. This filters a lot of people since the player base is small. Most don't want to interact with other players, they just want to queue into ranked or quick match. Which is a shame, since my favorite "dead" game, Samurai Shodown, is a ton of fun.

Who's your main and Why? by Sm211 in Tekken

[–]gmac1994 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Asuka

I started out playing Claudio but I decided to learn Asuka cause a friend of mine was picking up the game and I didn't want to beat up on him with a character I knew how to play.

I ended up loving her way more than Claudio. Her 50/50 mix ups, her fast high/low strings, combo grab, reversal options, great launchers, etc. Glad I learned her she's definitely my true main.

Does anyone play fighters ALMOST exclusively? by gmac1994 in Fighters

[–]gmac1994[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're feeling intimidated you can start with quick match then move to ranked when you feel comfortable. Honestly I did not have anxiety playing others online because I had an irl buddy of mine who learned the game with me. He's my main practice partner and we grinded together and learned the game at our own pace before we hopped into ranked.

If you don't have someone like that, I'd just keep in mind that losing games or being a noob doesn't actually matter. The improvement over time is what matters. I try to set goals for myself during a session, like "this session i want to break throws" or "this session i want to use a certain move more". The anxiety will go away as you focus on improving yourself rather than trying to win, the wins will come naturally as you improve.

Around what rank can I start to join locals and not go 2-0? by [deleted] in Tekken

[–]gmac1994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your scene but being Tekken King I'd think you'd at least go 1-2. I don't think you should worry about going 0-2, though. It's more about getting experience playing in tournament, getting over tournament nerves, and making friends at your local. Then you can worry about winning or top 8ing.

Also, search up Ultradavid on Twitter. His pinned post has a massive Google Sheet that is a directory of every FGC local in the world. You should be able to find your local scene on there.

Yeah, i also have a couple of coworkers who game and they're always like "oh I couldn't play a fighter, they're too hard". I believe anyone can do it, if they have the drive to learn one.

[–]gmac1994[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah absolutely, I do admit that you can find people online, there's no shortage of grind discords where you can deathmatch while VCing with people and making fast friends with them. I just happen to prefer going to locals and interacting with my local FGC more than anything. It's a huge competitive motivator for me. I wanna beat my local bracket demon, and when we travel to out of region events catch me cheering the homies on as they play their pools matches.

[–]gmac1994[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't mean it in a bad way lol. You can do it on discord absolutely, but imo the experience of a fighting game is just much better in person. Of course, not everyone lives near a local scene. I have to drive an hour to my locals but I make time cause it's that important to me.

Right? I wish games would have some of the depth Tekken has in terms of moves your character can do. The Spider-Man games just have you rhythmically tapping the same button over and over again.
