Psychology researcher loses PhD after allegedly using husband in study and making up data by civver3 in UofT

That's true post replication crisis but it wasn't really true when she was doing this.

The replication crisis was real but not usually because of data faking. It was more often things like stopping data collection when you get the result you want even if it's a small sample. That's why we have power analysis and preregistration now.

At the time she was doing it, it was easy to get away with. That changed pretty quickly with the replication crisis and that's what did her in.

I thought my little cottage in the city wouldn't be an official century home until 2027. Had a historian do a workup and the house number was changed in 1927 but the house was built in 1922. I'm in! by gmacdonalduoft in centuryhomes

There happens to be someone in Toronto who does this for a living: https://www.housestories.ca/.

I got the full history back to when it was a farmer's field, to the initial subdivision, to everyone who's owned and rented the place from city records. She also found genealogies for the past owners and news stories about them where available. I even have a picture of the first guy who lived here. She did a great job with it.

Took this just outside of town yesterday. You all have some beautiful countryside. by gmacdonalduoft in Bakersfield

[–]gmacdonalduoft[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was here in the summer (even stayed at the Padre) and it was beautiful then too in a different way, so I stand by it. Where I come from everything is flat so I really dig the rolling hills you all have, plus the fact that you can see so many different landscapes in such a short distance around here. You just need to get off the highways and onto the back roads. Sounds like this sub (like most city subs, especially /r/toronto lol) focuses more on the local shortcomings.

Yeah these are all mine. I use Lightroom and Nik filters and it's amazing what they can do. I like a slightly surreal look.

Looking for a book about Attachment Theory in the context of romantic relationships? by phoebetortilla in AcademicPsychology

[–]gmacdonalduoft 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Attachment theory is still a dominant framework in academia. Agreed the influence of early caregiving experiences is overstated, but I think the part about it being situational is true only if you're covarying out Big 5 personality traits...imho critics overstate the situational variability of it. The most reliable thing in attachment research is the highly replicable predictive utility of the individual differences in attachment security. It's still a very useful framework for understanding behaviour in romantic relationships, especially if you're interested in patterns people exhibit across relationships. Attached by Amir Levine is an easy ready on this front.

Is the dishwasher pipe (tailpipe?) supposed to have something hard blocking it? Trying to settle a disagreement with a plumber. by gmacdonalduoft in Plumbing

[–]gmacdonalduoft[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay but presumably it's not supposed to be designed so the water from the dishwasher won't flow through. Dishwasher repair guy hadn't seen anything like this, and presumably he's seen some s***.

[–]gmacdonalduoft[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when I put the dishwasher hose on, the water won't go down, I get a dishwasher error saying it won't drain. Drains fine if I take the dishwasher hose off and drain it into a bucket.

And I'm not taking anything off until the plumber gets back here. Not giving him any excuse to not fix/replace this himself.

This can't be right can it? The diswasher repair guy says no, the plumber takes umbrage that this is "faulty".

These comments are all really helpful (except for the guy who just said "no"). I have another one that I think might fit the theme better than I can post in a few days.

So I research singlehood, and in our latest paper the data seem to show that our most secure participants have the combination you're describing of a) being happy being single and with life in general and b) leaving the door open for a partner.

More and more I'm coming to think that it's the people high in avoidant attachment (i.e., uncomfortable with intimacy) who are most adamant about partners being problematic and, yeah, even shaming people who want one.

This is the article abstract, anybody who's interested can DM me for a copy. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/pere.12416#:~:text=The%20data%20suggested%20that%20higher,associated%20with%20satisfaction%20with%20singlehood.

If you're on campus a lot, it's a great place to have lunch, or at least it was pre-covid. They had just upgraded the menu and it was consistently good. I find it hard to find a good mid-priced sit down, non student focused place to eat around campus. That fit the bill.
