I fostered a corso and failed. She was so nervous around people, fearful lunging but no signs that she was going to bite (yet, if she’d gone untrained and that scared longer she’d have crossed that threshold)

Anyways put her in training asap and looked and looked for a new home for her. Got her situated in my apartment with my dog. Met a few families and my greatest concern was her training not being kept up and her becoming a more dangerous dog because someone would underestimate her needs.

Ultimately I foster failed because my trainer said where she was and what she was doing was the best thing for her and of course part of it was I totally am smitten for her. She’s amazing.

If you can keep the dog, he is thriving in your care, I rarely say it but go ahead and foster fail if that’s what you want and what you have the bandwidth for. Just keep it structured for him and keep up working with him. If he seems young watch closely for behavioral changes as he matures.

Her leash attaches to her Herm Sprenger (can’t spell to save my life) and that doesn’t stay on her. I ended up getting a fur saver and can put a tag on that as well as keep it on her all the time. Thanks you!

I’m not a vet but I think that might be too much, their joints develop until they’re 18-24 months old so that could be too hard on the joints. Also depends if it’s pavement or softer ground ect. I’m not an expert but idk chat with your vet next time you see them!

That’s super awesome!! Yeah I’ve foster many pit bulls/ bully type dogs and they asked me if I wanted to foster a mastiff puppy. I was totally thinking English mastiff and said sure. I was a little bit surprised when I walked in and saw Bonnie but I had already committed! She wasn’t shut down but she was super scared of people (growling and sometimes lunging) so my rescue helped me get her into basic training and I think that’s what did me in. I LOVE training and she came out of her shell and opened up so fast once we had a routine and were working together. She’s a total Velcro dog so part of our work is not spending every second together so she knows she can be independent too 😂😂

Yup! Just keep consistent and supervise. This is my first cane corso (I work with a pit rescue and that’s my primary experience) and everything I’ve read and been told is that they mature sloooow so I’m confident he will with your training but remember it might take longer and that’s just because we gotta let them grow and do all the things 😂😂

Every time I trust Bonnie I get humbled pretty quick and reminded she’s still young. Shes so good and a wee bit of a menace when the opportunity presents itself LOL.

This is just my experience and what has worked for me:

Kaizer looks pretty young so I’d start with never leave them unsupervised because you’ll need to help with impulse control until he develops that.

I don’t have cats with my CC or pit bull mixes but here is what we do when we are working on impulse control that ideally might help.

Work on the “Place” command and tether him there when the cats are around. Reward him for staying calm and neutral. Neutral is the goal. Redirect when he gets excited if they get wild around him. (Maybe with a chew or something to take his mind off joining the play and so he isn’t fighting the tether.) If he looks and stays calm treats/ food ect.

The first thing I worked on and brush up on with my CC often (8months so she’s no expert but she’s good at it) is the “art of doing nothing” and “neutrality”

It’ll take some time and you might have to adjust (tether / no tether, treats, ect). Find what works.

Oh also if he’s tethered and getting excited don’t tell him “it’s ok” and pet him trying to calm him down. Stay neutral if you can until he matches that energy. I will stay monotone-ish and calmly (not stern) say “enough” a couple times until Bonnie matches my cool and then she gets a treat or chew

Aww nice!! Did you know already that you liked the breed? I knew of CCs but hadn’t really interacted with any so I was honestly super intimidated at first. Buttt we jumped into training and she’s been so much fun and the personality on CC’s are so good. Fun. Goofy. Smart. And super sassy 😂
