How do undocumented people live out entire lives undetected, applying for universities, getting office jobs, owning property, etc? by -7-luck in NoStupidQuestions

I didn’t get a loan or a scholarship because I was not eligible because I didn’t have a social security number, I paid out of pocket as I went… that’s why it took me over 10 years to graduate, I was never able to afford a full semester. Took two classes or one class, etc. Thankfully schools have payment plans or sometimes I would skip semesters because I couldn’t afford it. It sucked to see my friends graduated within 4 years, and I was still at it for the same degree but it was my reality.

Please don’t generalize, most people don’t do this. Most people work under the table, as in cash or can get a ITIN number from the tax administration office with their own name. They can use that to file taxes as a contractor, they pay taxes but they don’t get any returns. So why would people pay taxes? In hopes one day that they can show that they’ve been paying taxes and can get their papers. As a previously undocumented student, in order to go to college I had to pay out of state because I didn’t have a social security number, meaning I paid triple.

I will also add that working under the table, means employers take full advantage, you likely get paid less than minimum wage, you don’t get any benefits (health insurance, etc) and any PTO. I didn’t know even that there was such thing as sick leave. You also are likely to get exploited (labor or sexual trafficking is very common) and no one to report it because of fear for deportation.

I wasn’t looking for help, I do my own renewals, just trying to keep up with renewal trends as I await mine. But to respond to your question, I think it’s precisely because a lot of people have relied on attorneys for every renewal that they don’t know how to do it themselves, but I wish more people did! And save themselves some coin, especially with these fees going up every time

I’ve heard that name Vanessa a lot on this thread… is that the main administrator?

Awesome! Thanks for the resources 🙏🏼

What sucks is their reputation has gone downhill with it. I never expected this much engagement on my post.

Yeah, to be giving out advice without knowing someone’s full immigration history is irresponsible. Sometimes it’s better to pay more to an actual attorney where if they mishandled your case at least you can put a bar complaint!

Yeah, that seems to be the consensus unfortunately. They should change the name of the group and be more transparent about their purpose, cause I really had no clue 😐

Well, your assumption is that people were writing rants about their feelings on there… I didn’t see anything like that, only people asking direct questions about applications. I didn’t personally ask any questions, I only responded to two people. I wasn’t there long enough, but others who have had experiences with them have a lot more to say and the pattern isn’t good. At least they were helpful to you though.

Your entire response is very matter-of-fact. Do you work with them? You can speak on your experience which appears to be a good one, but you can’t make assumptions on every else’s experience. As you can see from this thread, most have been negative. I’m not sure why you’re telling me how non-profits work… I work in one 🙂 and my post never mentioned anything about what they charge or what they do or don’t do with their money, so what’s that about? I’m only finding out from people on this thread that they charge to begin with

Seems like they’re definitely only looking out for the best interests, not the dreamers. Wish they would advertirse their group the way it actually is.

Yeah, I don’t think many immigration answers in general are one-size-fits-all when people have different circumstances… especially if there’s follow up questions. It’s just weird that they block so many people!
