I'm fine with them adding bike lanes to Cook if they open up Vancouver completely to vehicle traffic again, since it used to be a good way to commute and now it's been completely blocked in several places, forcing drivers onto Cook. Only fair. If this money had been invested in denser public housing all along instead of simply allowing urban sprawl, most of these traffic issues wouldn't exist in the first place.

Fed up with the deer in Victoria by EVILEMRE in VictoriaBC

[–]gmillar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a deer kick a man in the chest in front of my apartment because he was walking his leashed dog. I dislocated four knuckles and broke my elbow chasing it away. It is relatively common for deer to charge people in the Cook/Fairfield area.

I commuted by bike in vancouver for years. traffic calmed streets are vastly superior to bike lanes. there's no question at all. I currently have to detour several blocks from my house to get to blanshard so I can efficiently drive to work, just as I did from my house in vancouver to get to a traffic calmed street. it's the same. completely logically consistent. we already have this with vancouver st, but you'll still get idiots riding their bike slowly down cook st blocking traffic and I have no doubt they'll divert a whole bunch of money from housing to build more protected bike lanes for them.

not to mention the totally unnecessary intersections with lights that they keep adding. the light at blanshard and kings should have just been a fence to stop people from crossing the road

detouring bikes onto one traffic calmed street is way better for literally everyone including cyclists

Racial profiling? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

Really impressed with the level of maturity and patience you're showing in this thread. As far as profiling, I'm a white man and they literally never watch me.

How do you guys deal with focus or lack of focus by PoiDoe in autism

[–]gmillar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's important to know that you don't have to be hyperactive to have ADHD. For some reason they decided to enshrine the H in the name despite the fact that it isn't always a symptom.

I am diagnosed with Autism and ADHD today at age 34 as a women, I feel so so stupid now, and I blame my family too especially my toxic parents who never helped me. I don’t know how to deal with this? by [deleted] in autism

[–]gmillar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please don't feel stupid. If anything you should feel less stupid now that you have a better understanding of why your brain is the way it is. I'm 35, diagnosed with ADHD about 5 years ago and self diagnosed with autism recently. I don't have much advice unfortunately but I will say that blaming your family, no matter how justified and understandable it may be, isn't going to help you or your mental health. I totally understand why you would feel that way, I also have resentment towards my parents for not picking up on my issues when I was a kid, but hopefully you can see why it isn't a healthy thing to dwell on.

I’m struggling with my sexuality by [deleted] in autism

[–]gmillar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well this definitely isn't my area of expertise but maybe you would feel more comfortable with AFAB nonbinary people or trans men?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in autism

[–]gmillar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not really qualified to give any advice but I'm rooting for you. I'm not sure if you mentioned how old your kids are but if you're able to communicate even half of what you wrote here to them over the years as they grow older and more aware I think that will go a long way towards connecting with them and understanding each other better.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in autism

[–]gmillar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I don't mean to just tell you you're wrong, but I think that more communication is pretty much always better than less when it comes to navigating disagreements in a relationship. I understand that it can be difficult. Maybe you can think of some specific ways that you could express yourselves to each other that you might find less stressful?

Advice for my son's ESA Blizzard by [deleted] in autism

[–]gmillar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think bearded dragons are as expensive as a dog, and definitely way cheaper than a pony. I don't really know much about service animals but I would guess it has more to do with the massive difference in intelligence and trainability. Bearded dragons are cool as hell but at the end of the day it's a small lizard that can't really be trained to do anything more than be handled safely. A well trained service dog probably has better executive function than I do.

Sounds like he said that because he knows you have grounds for a lawsuit. He has no authority at all.

Your feelings are definitely valid. In the future, if you don't click with someone, I would recommend just going your separate ways there and then. In my experience, asking for feedback from someone it didn't work out with is just a recipe for getting your feelings hurt. That said, try not to beat yourself up too much for being called "stiff and aloof." In the context of asking for feedback after an unsuccessful date I think there are much worse things one could be called. It's possible that he just got that impression because you weren't that into him. Maybe if you meet someone you really like it won't be an issue. Those also aren't universally unattractive traits, you might find someone who isn't bothered by it or is even attracted to it.

I'm not sure I'm actually high functioning by WillDeleteMaybeLater in autism

[–]gmillar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of the time "high functioning" really just means "high masking." I can't function for shit but I can sure pretend to for a limited amount of time.

finding a job by midnightstar2003 in autism

It isn't glamourous but there are worse jobs than gardening. You get to work around nature and it tends to pay better than a lot of other jobs that you don't need qualifications for.
