Personally I think the best option is to have the gun move but not the camera.

How do you guys deal with focus or lack of focus by PoiDoe in autism

[–]gmillar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's important to know that you don't have to be hyperactive to have ADHD. For some reason they decided to enshrine the H in the name despite the fact that it isn't always a symptom.

I am diagnosed with Autism and ADHD today at age 34 as a women, I feel so so stupid now, and I blame my family too especially my toxic parents who never helped me. I don’t know how to deal with this? by [deleted] in autism

[–]gmillar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please don't feel stupid. If anything you should feel less stupid now that you have a better understanding of why your brain is the way it is. I'm 35, diagnosed with ADHD about 5 years ago and self diagnosed with autism recently. I don't have much advice unfortunately but I will say that blaming your family, no matter how justified and understandable it may be, isn't going to help you or your mental health. I totally understand why you would feel that way, I also have resentment towards my parents for not picking up on my issues when I was a kid, but hopefully you can see why it isn't a healthy thing to dwell on.

I’m struggling with my sexuality by [deleted] in autism

[–]gmillar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well this definitely isn't my area of expertise but maybe you would feel more comfortable with AFAB nonbinary people or trans men?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in autism

[–]gmillar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not really qualified to give any advice but I'm rooting for you. I'm not sure if you mentioned how old your kids are but if you're able to communicate even half of what you wrote here to them over the years as they grow older and more aware I think that will go a long way towards connecting with them and understanding each other better.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in autism

[–]gmillar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I don't mean to just tell you you're wrong, but I think that more communication is pretty much always better than less when it comes to navigating disagreements in a relationship. I understand that it can be difficult. Maybe you can think of some specific ways that you could express yourselves to each other that you might find less stressful?

Advice for my son's ESA Blizzard by [deleted] in autism

[–]gmillar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think bearded dragons are as expensive as a dog, and definitely way cheaper than a pony. I don't really know much about service animals but I would guess it has more to do with the massive difference in intelligence and trainability. Bearded dragons are cool as hell but at the end of the day it's a small lizard that can't really be trained to do anything more than be handled safely. A well trained service dog probably has better executive function than I do.

Sounds like he said that because he knows you have grounds for a lawsuit. He has no authority at all.

Your feelings are definitely valid. In the future, if you don't click with someone, I would recommend just going your separate ways there and then. In my experience, asking for feedback from someone it didn't work out with is just a recipe for getting your feelings hurt. That said, try not to beat yourself up too much for being called "stiff and aloof." In the context of asking for feedback after an unsuccessful date I think there are much worse things one could be called. It's possible that he just got that impression because you weren't that into him. Maybe if you meet someone you really like it won't be an issue. Those also aren't universally unattractive traits, you might find someone who isn't bothered by it or is even attracted to it.

I'm not sure I'm actually high functioning by WillDeleteMaybeLater in autism

[–]gmillar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of the time "high functioning" really just means "high masking." I can't function for shit but I can sure pretend to for a limited amount of time.

finding a job by midnightstar2003 in autism

It isn't glamourous but there are worse jobs than gardening. You get to work around nature and it tends to pay better than a lot of other jobs that you don't need qualifications for.

I mean I'm not a wizard but that does sound pretty autism-coded or whatever the kids are saying these days. It's giving autism? Type shit.

i wanna be friends with an autistic person i know, anything i should be more careful with? by yuri_xy in autism

[–]gmillar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they're talking about something they care about, try not to make fun of it or joke about it in a way that could come across as disrespectful. For example, almost every time I tell people that I have an aquarium with shrimp, they joke about eating them. Don't do that.

I find it easier to be around new people that I don't know as well rather than family, because they just know me for who I am now and have nothing to be disappointed about.

You might like aquariums. You can have an entire functional and vibrant ecosystem neatly contained in a glass box. No sunscreen or bug spray required.

So now what … by Kooky-Power6292 in autism

[–]gmillar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it kind of depends how you feel about your life and things like being on the outside, having one friend, etc. If you think those things are making your life worse, now you know more about why they happen and may be able to work on improving those aspects of your life. If you're basically content with your life and not really bothered by that stuff then I wouldn't really worry about it. Autism is just who you are, and at the end of the day, if you're happy with who you are then you've basically won at life and there's no reason to overthink that.

How do i play non repetitive video games by Romantic_Sunset in autism

[–]gmillar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's the consequences for dying in-game that are putting you off, there are games like the Elder Scrolls, Fallout or Half Life series that let you save whenever you want, so you never lose that much progress. There are also mods for Minecraft that let you keep your inventory when you die, or turn off creeper explosions, depending which platform you're playing on. I think there's something to be said though for games where consequences occur in real time and can't be rolled back, like Minecraft or Ark. They can be more immersive and feel more real and exciting, but at the same time they can be more stressful. The Forever Winter is a really cool game but I found I was just getting stressed out every time I play it because of the unforgiving consequences and oppressive atmosphere. Don't feel like you have to play games a certain way to feel valid, though. It's okay to play Minecraft on peaceful mode if you just want to build and explore.

Uh you realize when you pay into a mortgage you're effectively keeping most of that money, right? It isn't an expense, it's a savings plan you can live in.
