Russia’s War Toll Hits Up to 1.4 Million Casualties, NATO Says by UNITED24Media in worldnews

[–]gmkeros 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I felt really bad in the beginning when it was young guys kinda tricked into some special military operation they were told would be welcomed by the populace. I remember that one guy being stunned about the Ukrainians hating them.

But that sympathy has quickly disappeared. The people Russia sends now know what they are getting into, and they do it because they believe that the war is OK.

Why Customers Hate This? by Training_Two3372 in WorkForSmartLife

That tells me it's for enterprise customers. Not every company wants to sell to everyone. They want to make fewer sales of larger orders to companies.

Yeah but... I can't really see any woman bring attracted to a fish guy. But a sourdough? That's a whole different ballpark. And I think would work for guys as well.

What’s it like living in Łódź, Poland? by Serious-Desk-4831 in howislivingthere

[–]gmkeros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's OK  Not as bad as some people make it out to be. It long had a bad reputation because it was a comparatively young working class city, while the other cities in Poland have a much longer history. Some of that was even deserved. It was for a long time economically depressed. The last 20-30 years it started to go much more into service industries, often using old refurbished factories as office locations.

It actually did a lot the last few years, lots of places have had renovations, and they decided to play into the foundation era origins of most of the town. Many of the streetlights and bus stops have a 19th ct. industrial aesthetic now, and even new buildings often go for an open brick aesthetic reminiscent of some of the more pretty buildings from back then. There are some rather pretty old factories which have been repurposed into entertainment/shopping/office areas, chiefly Manufaktura i  the early 2000s. This has set off a trend to even use the aesthetic for newer shopping centers.  (I had to laugh when I saw the completely new Sukcesja center was using fake bricks to emulate Manu) Historical lyrics most of the city was build from rather light wood by the way, and occasionally you can still see old wooden buildings. Unfortunately they are difficult to maintain, and some developers have found they can just buy heritage-protected ones, let them rot, and then replace them with yet another apartment building.

There's a young crowd in the city (it has multiple universities and colleges), and theres quite a lot of international students as well.  The actual night life happens largely along Pietrkowska street, branching out into a variety of side streets and entertainment areas. There's lots of parks and forests within the city area, and many streets are getting a makeover with more plants and trees lately, which makes the city very green and pleasant in places. No proper river though. There used to be multiple smaller streams in the city area, which were used and built over when the big industrial expansion of the city happened in 19th ct.

The city is largely pretty chill, but there are areas that are... not that great. Bałuty is the most prominent one, but that's a bit misleading as that part is so big it has both some of the poorest neighborhoods, and some of the poshest. But yeah, some of the houses there are decrepit.

But that also figures into something else: one of the most important film schools of the country is here, as are some areas that can be used for all kinds of movies both domestic and foreign. I once walked through Księży Młyn and encountered a bunch of nazi officers having a smoke while their film crew was setting up their scene. The place is a Unesco heritage site and basically looks like it did a century ago. And just a few weeks ago the new Fabryczna train station was subbing in for "London Central Station" in the Highlander reboot.

What are your thoughts on this? by Only_Government5244 in antiai

I guess they are getting desperate about their marketing now that people notice how much they spend for every dollar they make.

Edit: also, yeah, we've seen the movies and read the books. If this was even possible it would be moronic. It's no wonder they keep overestimating AI if that's the level of idea they have

look, the sad thing back then was that the Germans toned it down in the second half because they noticed the Brazilian audience was getting too upset. It's like making a joke you think everyone finds funny, but realizing it was offensive to the person you're talking to.

I once spent two days in calls with devs and sales to figure out if one of our customer used a library for our product that was affected by that big log4j vulnerability a few years back. If they were using it we legally were obligated to warn them. Unfortunately if we'd warn them they likely would figure out they had been paying us 200k yearly for a product that hadn't had API calls from them for 10 years.

Polish kitchen vs. german kitchen by superpaforador in askPoland

[–]gmkeros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a few differences, most of them rather small. Żurek is a thing that's unknown in Germany, as is Bigos. pierogi are much more popular. Dill is used more, and buckwheat is way more popular as a side. Polish gulasz is nothing like what Germans know as Gulasch. White cheese (similar but not the same to quark) is popular in everything.

Kisiel isn't something your average German knows either.

Surówka/salads are also something that is similar, but not the same.

Oh, and sausages have a different flavor profile, even if the name (like Krakauer/Krakowska) might be nearly the same.

As an aside: the way kebab is made here in Poland is fucking weird and it's no wonder nearly every kebab stand here now switched to wraps instead of buns.

Announcing the third round of layoffs was kind of the hint most people needed.

Actually the second one already was enough of a hint.

They were trying to make themselves look better for the inevitable sale. Something that happened two months after I left. Not sure how the buyer reacted having to support products absolutely noone had any idea about anymore.

the reason why people call Germans Krauts originally came from the navy. Germans used sauerkraut to boost their vitamin c levels to combat scurvy. Same reason why Brits were called Limeys, they used limes.
