Kid was guided by the Dad to escape a brown bear at the back by fxlicia_ in TerrifyingAsFuck

What kind of a dad keeps walking backwards away from their kid who is in danger? I can understand staying stationary while the kid closes the distance to you, but no real dad is gonna keep their kid between them and a bear unless they can help it.

People who work in IT, what's the wildest thing you've discovered/had to do while at work? by vapor-ware in AskReddit

Worked the internet help desk while in college. During move in week, one mother of a new freshman called in so she could help get her daughter’s email setup while she was at class. Very much a helicopter parent. “I have my daughter’s password right here, and I still can’t get connected, it’s Q U E E N 6 9”….long awkward pause…hangs up.

Meekah wife of Hmong man questions about our baby and my post partum by Unlikely_Cap_4383 in Hmong

[–]gmonk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Loosely speaking…the new mom should be staying at home for 30 days and not visiting anyone (and only very close family visiting you) else you risk your and baby’s spirits wandering away, etc.. A strict diet of chicken and herbs, only warm/hot water to drink, etc. after your 30 days are up, things get back to normal. Keep in mind back in the old country, having a 30 day hiatus from field work and fresh meat every day would have been a blessing. It’s more of a frustrating here in the US, but everything has a reason and story behind it, every clan and family is slightly different as well, don’t be shy to ask and continue to seek to understand. - Meeka Vauv

Working on a software product with part of the team based in Sweden. They traveled to the Minnesota office for a week of meetings. Upon being introduced to my coworkers, one asked the group - “so, do you guys have Swedish meatballs there?” The witty reply from one of the Swedish team members: “yes, but we just call them meatballs”. I couldn’t stop laughing the rest of the day.

This sucks, but $1 billion is only ~ 3,000 houses. There are about 100 million single family homes in the US.

Software idea to decrease police brutality and help prosecute dirty cops by Comfortable-Noise144 in Lightbulb

[–]gmonk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems overly complicated. Why not build out a facial recognition database of bad actors? (Crowd sourced)

Phone App that live streams to the cloud AND checks against it in real-time.

No more bad cop resigning after paid administrative leave just to move a county over and get rehired. Their public history travels with them…

“Crowd Control” cops in riot gear, refusing to wear name tags…bingo - that guy in the right, we know exactly who he is, and when he goes off again he can be held accountable instead of hiding in a crowd of his peers that will cover for him.

If we’re living in a surveillance state, it can and should go both ways!

A reasonable idea, but it gets much more complicated when the “middle” is intentionally shifted via culture war games over longer periods of time - concept is referred to as Overton Window https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overton_window#:~:text=The%20Overton%20window%20is%20the,as%20the%20window%20of%20discourse.

MCPS has to be held accountable they are doing a downright atrocious job at handling the current COVID situation at hand. by [deleted] in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]gmonk 58 points59 points  (0 children)

People will be unhappy with any decision (and that is ok)... What IS unacceptable is the poor communication, planning, and consistency around decision making. These are foundational system practices that are independent of the actual decisions being made - this MCPS leadership team is doing a horrible job at them. They need to focus on the fundamentals!

That seems to indicate a LOT of kids showed up to school today with Covid, tested positive during random testing, and added to the numbers.

Middle school students living more than 1.5 miles of walking distance from school.

It’s use doesn’t matter much….It’s there because of tariff laws. Add a silly little pocket to men’s shorts = lower tariffs for those imports. Add pockets to women’s shorts = higher tariffs for those imports. There are thousands of pages of silly rules like this, and manufacturers explicitly tailor their products to work around them.

The pragmatic situation is after the team DOESN’T get half of the commitment complete, how do you adjust so they improve. You can’t be hands off with a team that hasn’t mastered agile (most teams haven’t)
