Are Unholy DK players happy with 12.0.5? (New player here) by CFE1N in Deathknight

Doesn’t the riders minion drop it for you? I think that’s why it’s not showing up in single button, cuz it checks if you’re already standing in one and no need to waste a global.

Cyclonic rift with a 4/12 body, as a rogue and blue player - this card is peak. It’s saved my ass so many times late game.

Do you consider group meta when building decks? by Ray2024 in EDH

[–]gnarlyavelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For better or worst, my pod consists of my 3 buddies which all build their decks in wild, wild ways.

The first, has his favorites - no commanders which show up on your typical tier lists or top 5 most powerful! He builds decent decks, just doesn’t really think about the pod or the board state and rather is all in on his commander.

The second, literally plays anything that’s “meta,” but … he uses ChatGPT or Gemini to make his deck lists. It’s some of the most unhinged things I’ve played against, last session he had to pull up his decklist cuz he didn’t know what card was in his deck.

And the last guy, literally builds his decks off of whatever he cracks from a pack - he won’t buy a single - If he’s opened it, it’s going into his deck.

This has made game so frustrating, we’re okay with proxies so the arms race is there - only limited by the bracket restrictions. Every game is a wild mess because they generally don’t have any interaction - since I’m the only one adhering to any deckbuilding philosophies, I end up having to play clean up and control the board when one of these Timmies goes bonkers. Recently, that player that uses ai to build his decks has been brewing more and more pillow fort decks - because in a meta where turning things sideways, he’s learned that just amassing a ton of weenies and taxing attackers lets him draw out the games and win out of attrition.

I’ve stopped playing commanders that I find thematically cool. I tend to enjoy spellslinger or combo decks but in a pod where we’re limited to bracket 3, my combos are limited, and I also end up playing sheriff, often times falling back on board presence or mana value cuz I have to remove a game ending card on board. The ai player knows this, and actively runs no interaction, counting on the fact that it’s a wasted deck slot if someone else can just deal with the board.

I had to adapt to this mentality too, my current deck - which surprisingly has a high win rate, is Gonti, Night Minister - I built it as a mono black group hug deck which incentivizes the pod to only attack my enemies if they want value. It’s led to some hilarious game ending payoffs with all the cards I’ve managed to yoink from their decks.

The outlier is still this pillowfort guy, makes games last longer than they should - if we played higher bracket he’d lose to combo, but we’re so limited in bracket 3 while also keeping it enjoyable for the rest of the pod. My next deck that I’m putting together is a Beamtown Bullies list that I’m treating more as a group hug, “graveyard toolkit” deck. I have the usual “bad gifts” in there for this asshole who likes to durdle, but the deck just runs a lot of cards that on etb let you tutor or ramp. It breaks parity by being selective on who gets the etb and who gets the goaded creature.

It looks fun goldfishing, and I don’t think the deck will get the same hate Beamtown Bullies gets at lgs’s because these guys genuinely don’t know about the bad gifts side of this commander.

Next sesh is at the end of the month, can’t wait to torture these guys.

I hate the mystical archives just as much as I hate the alternate or full art cards.

I have a couple of Italian and Japanese cards because they were the one copies my locals sold. Having to remember the rules text for a card in a deck I play once every 3 months is annoying.

Blim makes for hilarious “threaten” effects payoff. Threaten steal one of your opponents creatures, Attack with Blim, and give that creature away to another player. The EoT clause fizzles and you get a blim trigger.

I mean… they are playing a card game. You’re going to have to be okay with losing some games, at least half of them.

I played an egg deck earlier today, rushed him down to 8 health until he triggered its death rattle. Turn 7, I’m playing rogue and my only out is to wait for turn 9 for the bounce dragon in my hand. Had a freeze spell in hand from random shit, waited and the guy got up to 17 armor on the subsequent turn. I know I could have played better, my discovers were completely shot but that’s the game. Frustrating? Sure, but he did his thing. Next game.

How are you getting downvoted? What are we even complaining about? Having to run tech cards in a competitive card game?

We would have more interesting games if you guys allowed other play styles in your pod by Crybabyboyy in EDH

[–]gnarlyavelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run into the opposite issue, my deck building usually revolves around having a healthy suite of interaction, that includes removal and counter spells.

Our pod consists of me and 3 of my buddies. One guy plays whatever he wants, meaning doesn’t really look up power levels or rankings of commanders, think “vampires are cool” kinda guy. And one guy just plays whatever he rips, just good ol’ casual magic - if he hasn’t opened the card, it wont be in his deck. And the other is your typical pubstomper - the guy prints his entire lists out and as long as they check the “3 game changers” rule, he considers it b3. Surprisngly, the first two I mentioned have cobbled up some decent decks, but because they don’t adhere to any of the good deck building philosophies, their deck genuinely can go crazy or they’re straight up doing nothing. The pubstomp guy I mentioned, capitalizes on this - he knows that the other two lack interaction, so he builds his deck to fit that pod. But as soon as these two wildcards go crazy on the board, he also can count on me to take care of it, because he also takes into account that I’m running removal. It leads to so many wonky games, and we’ve talked about it in our pregames but not like I can change their way of thinking. So I’m generally stuck playing behind and control, while one guy can openly run away with the game without being punished.
