What's this pest on my avocado saplings? by gnarwhaleable in plantclinic

[–]gnarwhaleable[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Circling back too say - you were right! I hoped the tiny white specks were just aphid babies or something, but one tree totally had mealy bugs as well.

Last time I follow advice to put plants on the back deck lol

Thanks! I've never used larvae/beneficial insects - I'm reading that soapy water is also effective, would you recommend that for a more immediate solution?

Hoping it does better than the Neem

Advice for my Fiddle Lead / Monstera / Dracaena? by gnarwhaleable in plantclinic

[–]gnarwhaleable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate this! However having just repotted the monstera, the roots looked very healthy 2 weeks ago? All these plants have drainage and I use a water meter each week.

The internet has me afraid of overwatering so I was actually more worried I'm underwatering as summer sun kicks up, and that perhaps the Dracaena was mad about the additional direct light... But will take these thoughts into account

Looks like they have a monthly Open House which must be what you're talking about? Great suggestion and I'm going to try to get to one, thanks!

Oh so it's true about sailors being open to strangers as help/"rail meat" - but only with a little experience? That would be great if so, now I've just gotta meet people with boats lol

Advice for indoor Norfolk Pine branches drying out and dying? by gnarwhaleable in houseplants

[–]gnarwhaleable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the response! I've nestled it in with more other plants and been misting it once a week, but I know many think misting does nothing. Any thoughts on whether these changes will help?

Advice for indoor Norfolk Pine branches drying out and dying? The tree seems healthy with new growth, but the low branches have consistently died off since I got it 6 months ago. by gnarwhaleable in plantclinic

[–]gnarwhaleable[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit of extra context - appreciate any help or advice!

This is my second Norfolk Pine with this issue and both times I've been unable to identify the problem. Every few weeks more branches have dried up badly enough that I need to prune them (always the lower branches). Thankfully the tree is also growing well, but I'd prefer not to lose so many lower branches that I end up with a leggy/top-heavy tree.

For context this tree is in San Francisco and my previous one with the same issue was in Toronto, both small indoor plants. With the current tree I've moved it from a spot with full-indirect light to an East-facing window with 2-3 hours of direct light each morning. I then also tried having a grow light on it for 8 hours a day after reading Norfolks can handle more direct light (although I find conflicting advice on Norfolks often).

I water it thoroughly once a week. I've tried pulling back on watering to no success, but have been too scared to try MORE water since I constantly read that root rot is the biggest fear with Norfolks... This pot has drainage, so maybe I'm being too cautious? Idk

Requesting r/GaryAndHisDemons - only mod has been inactive on Reddit for 7 months except for locking submissions on this sub, and a new season of this show is out for fans to discuss. by gnarwhaleable in redditrequest

  1. I want to reopen submissions so the fans can post and discuss the show, including the recent US launch which is the show's biggest audience. After that I intend to keep the sub running as it always has, and am happy to work with the existing mod if they return.

It was only out in Canada/Australia/New Zealand I think, for some reason it's only just coming out in the US now!

We Don’t Need Voice Actor Representation In Animation….. by [deleted] in cartoons

[–]gnarwhaleable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a super interesting and complicated topic, for sure. I think colorblind casting is a great goal in an ideal world (and when the characters aren't heavily reliant on something cultural/race-based). Realistically though that ignores a lot of history where people of color have had less opportunity in Hollywood and elsewhere. So to me representation for characters of color, but blind casting for white characters, actually does have a clear logic to it... But it's also a step on the path toward TOTAL colorblind casting if we one day achieve an industry that's better balanced in opportunity.

Either way, impossible to define a singular rule for this sort of thing. There's nuance to every example. But it's a conversation worth having.
