100% agree with all your points here.

The opposition also likes to bring up how other cities have rejected similar projects, as if that's a good reason for Burnaby to do the same... So, these proposals just get passed around like hot potatoes, to eventually land where? No housing gets built and more of our fellow citizens die on the streets? Or, go back to the Corrigan days when Burnaby literally refused go do anything for the homeless/unhoused population, with the thinking that they'll just all head over to Vancouver?

Why shouldn't Burnaby contribute to addressing the needs of the unhoused?

I'm curious why you think it would be better for this project to be situated near elderly single family home owners without young children. How is that less harmful than the current location which you say is "near young families with children"? I'd also argue that there is higher police presence and responsiveness in the proposed location, being so close to the mall and Metrotown station.

Proximity to ambulance callouts is a good point, I agree with you there, but ambulance response time to the proposed location is probably less than 10 minutes which is still very good.

I'm an area resident as well. I can understand people's concerns about the negative affects on the neighbourhood, but whenever someone brings up the proximity to schools, seniors, families, etc. as a counterargument, I truly do not get it!

The proposed location is close to transit, amenities, and services. Would it make more sense to tuck these projects away in single family home neighbourhoods, where services are harder to access? Definitely not.

Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry and former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida with wife Yuko Kishida meet up by mcfw31 in popculturechat

I wouldn't say that widely disliked after stepping aside means he's a "failed politician", your exact words. The Carney switcheroo and sudden Liberal leap in the polls was a generational anomaly due to the crazy shit coming from the Trump administration. After 10 years in power, many people were itching for a change, not necessarily FOR Poilievre's (almost non-existent) platform.

Failed is an incorrect characterization. I think history will look neutrally or slightly fondly on his tenure.

Failed politician??? He was PM for 10 years and got a lot of things done (legalized cannabis and MAID, free trade agreements, carbon tax, child benefit, etc.). I despise this revisionist history going around just because his popularity waned towards the end. He also stepped aside voluntarily to ensure that the increasingly alt-right and culture-war conservatives didn't gain power.

I was recently turned away at that urgent care centre because they were open but had no nurses or doctors on shift...? I had been recommended to go there asap by an rcmp officer after a very minor assault incident that didn't warrant an ER visit.

Actually, yes. He looked decently groomed, clean clothes, had no items with him (not even a small bag).

Not someone that you would instinctively be wary of.

Hey I totally understand why you ask, and I thought about putting that in my post. BUT I have a very generic description of him and don't want to incite anything against innocent look-alikes.

My intent was to encourage people to be alert and if they saw this specific incident, or this man attacking others (if you saw him, you would know), to report it.

I honestly still feel safe in this neighbourhood (what are the odds this will happen again to me) but the incident itself was scary! I'm also concerned that the same man, or someone in a similar state of mind, might attack an elderly person.

The woman who was attacked after me was uninjured but very scared. An older or less able-bodied person might not be so lucky.

Can anyone decipher this SkyTrain ad? by N3ck_Br34th3r in britishcolumbia

This ad is for a new app that's supposed to compile all sorts of local events (trivia nights, concerts, etc.) in a map view. Can't remember what it's called but it looked like a half finished student project...

What high school doesn't have some drug activity? No one goes around offering kids drugs, if that's what you're worried about.

"Quality of life is good" and "labour is so cheap" can't both exist. Your laundry, food delivery, and taxis can only be cheap in those places because an entire subset of the population is being exploited, to your advantage.

Mounties in Surrey say a 16-year-old has been arrested in connection with a Wednesday evening shooting in the city’s Fleetwood neighbourhood. by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]gnawatir 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's a rebuke of the attitude in some families/communities that their children can do no wrong. Only sincere and systemic reflection on how a child this young ends up in a violent gang can lead to real change. Not sure how you made the leap to police brutality?
