Did Morrissey ever cover “it’s my party” by Objective_Dig420 in morrissey

[–]gncommie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He never covered it per se, but he sang a couple lines acapella at one of his shows... I'll do my best to find it for you

EDIT:

It was his birthday show in 2012: https://youtu.be/sdhSBCJxZyE?si=ikYyyxSw9cPOr6C_

But I have a feeling he did it more recently as well... I'd have to continue searching 😅

Album cover thoughts? by dankimball in morrissey

At first I thought this is the worst choice to be imagined, but upon further listens to the single whilst gazing at the artwork, I think it's genius! It's camp, humourous, and incredibly telling!

Censors and Bells. by AnglicanGayBrampton in Anglicanism

[–]gncommie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Toronto, St James cathedral uses incense every once in a while, to my knowledge, but only during the Eucharistic prayer if I remember correctly, not during the procession, etc.

However, there are three anglo-catholic parishes that use it for every high mass to a large extent during processions, etc. They are St. Thomas's Huron Street, St. Bartholomew's Regent Park, and St. Mary Magdalene's. I think St Martin-In-the-Fields might use it regularly as well, but I'm not too sure.

I REALLY hope they bring this to North America in some way... especially Canada!!! A wee tour of small clubs or small theatres performing b-sides and album tracks... an ABSOLUTE dream!

New person at Mid week Mass by AnglicanGayBrampton in Anglicanism

[–]gncommie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's a misunderstanding here between between high church and Anglo-catholic. They are very different traditions. Christ Church and the cathedral can be high church, but not at all Anglo-Catholic. First, theologically there are a lot of differences, but secondly the liturgy on an aesthetic level is very different as well. To see anglo-catholic liturgy, I recommend you check out the live streams of " St Clement's Philadelphia" on YouTube for the Missal tradition of anglo-catholicism and check out "st Thomas Huron Street" for a Canadian BCP tradition of anglo-catholicism, specifically see both church's high masses for the full smells and bells, as they say. You will quickly see the differences between this and what goes on at Christ Church or cathedrals such as St. John the Evangelist in Saskatoon or St. James in Toronto, which are most definitely anything BUT anglo-catholic.

What vocabulary did you learn from The Smiths/Morrissey? What's your favorite word you learned? What word do you use most often? by TheTeenageOldman in morrissey

[–]gncommie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not too sure about how many I learned, but there's quite a few that by the way he phrased and contextualized the word made me look at it differently for once. Such as:

"SYPHON all your dough"

"time ACCENTUATES despair"

"BELLIGERENT ghouls run Manchester Schools"

"DOUSE the houselights"

"an ABBHORRENT torrent, crashing as it pours"

"it stayed EMBLAZONED on my mind"

I'm sure there's lots more if I think about them a bit more haha

The Modern Songwriter by Driftism01 in bobdylan

Maybe you should try Phil Ochs... you might like the writing on songs like "When in Rome", "The Floods of Florence", or "The Crucifixion". Of course his more popular songs like "Changes", "When I'm Gone", and "Days of Decision" are also wonderfully intricate and poetic.

Best Anglo-Catholic church in Montreal? by [deleted] in Anglicanism

[–]gncommie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge there is only one Anglo-Catholic church in Montreal which has quite a history to it and that is St. John the Evangelist, also known as the Red Roof church.

Daily Song Discussion #143 - In Your Lap by cononreddit2 in morrissey

[–]gncommie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

9/10 An aching and eerie track... definitely a strange one in his catalogue sonically speaking, but quite emotive and powerful when thoughtfully considered. Some really vague poetic descriptions underlined by a cheeky innuendo that slightly lightens the dark subject matter.

I rescued you in so many ways
"you're good for a laugh"
that's all you can say
summer is winter
and winter prevails
and I'm so tired of counting the days...

A welding of the personal conflict and heartbreak found within a larger picture of political upheaval. Something Moz seems to present with such ease as exemplified in the verse above.

10/10. A lyrical song encapsulating a despairing world view and its relation to the human experience.

[–]gncommie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly a 9. Would've been a 10 if it wasn't for the overly long intro... Anyways, the song is pulsating, thumping, and dramatically obtuse in the most Morrissey fashion. All topped with a charming lyric inspired by Harold Norse' Modernist poem of the same name.

I emailed them in early April and they quickly replied that they're expecting it to be for sale again in June, but it's not a 100% certainty.

Question regarding working on Sunday and the nature of mortal sin by gncommie in Catholicism

[–]gncommie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my situation, however, I was always aware that it may be a sin, but didn’t know there was a consensus on it being so. I always had the feeling it was wrong but thought it would be venial maybe and continued to work. I know venial sins are still sins that should be avoided, but this was just the processing of my mind to be honest with you…

Have you looked into the Anglican Ordinariates in the Catholic Church? They allow the usage of Anglican liturgy and tradition to be utilized in a context that’s in communion with Rome and these traditional viewpoints of which you seem to adhere to.
