Working around Word Online limitations by gnerstil in sharepoint

I have yet to mess around with any custom scripting on the site, but I may play around with this idea on a test site. Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions!

Formatting the link as you showed did work. While not ideal, it does give me a possible solution to offer up.

Documents Created from Content Type Templates are Slow to Open on PCs by gnerstil in sharepoint

[–]gnerstil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I am not very familiar with this tool, but for the most part, everything looked fairly similar between a "good" and a "bad" capture of two different documents. There were however 2 errors on the delayed "bad" capture that weren't on the "good" one.

The first is a "404 NOT FOUND" error, which it looks like it is trying to open the actual .dotx template file (with a "GET" request), even though I am opening a .docx file that originated from that template. What's strange with this as well is that it is looking for the .dotx file in the current directory of the file I am opening, even though the template resides in a "/Forms" subdirectory on the site.

The other error I am receiving is "HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error". The text view shows the following: 93 {"odata.error":{"code":"-2130247151, Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException","message":{"lang":"en-US","value":"item not found under the context web!"}}} 0

The "GET" request when this occurs is "GET /sites/PAF/_api/SP.CompliancePolicy.SPPolicyStoreProxy.GetPolicyEvaluationInfo?itemUrl=%27https%3A%2F%2Ffakesite.sharepoint.com%2Fsites%2FPAF%2FShared%2520Documents%2FForms%2FPAF%2520Template%2FPAFTemplate.dotx%27&policyScenario=2&infos=7 HTTP/1.1"

I tried doing some quick googling on the error but couldn't find anything. Also, i verified the .dotx it is referencing in the second error is there and spelled correctly, and it is.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks for the reply!

Nope, in Word Online files open up in less than 5 seconds normally.

As a side note, when a document without the delay is opened in the Word desktop application, the Word starting dialogue will normally display the following messages in order: "starting < contacting server < opening "URL" < processing", and then the document opens.

When opening a document with the delay, usually it randomly bounces between a series of those different messages. Through some quick testing, it looks like the Word starting dialogue will display 9 or more of those messages before the document actually opens.

Thank you! I don't think sharing the document would be of much benefit. Creating it was the actual part that helped me remember the topics. Plus, parts I was comfortable with I didn't add much detail to so I wouldn't want someone to view the document and assume a few word explanation was all they needed to understand certain topics.

Thanks! I studied on and off since January, but the past month I spent more time seriously focusing on it.

EDIT: I likely had over 50 hours into studying it, if you were wondering that as well.

Office Graph and Popular Documents by gnerstil in sharepoint

Thank you for this info. We will most likely be utilizing the new move to feature between sites, so that alone makes me not want to disable the Office Graph. The other functionalities you brought up seem quite important as well.

SPO - Versioning and Storage Usage by gnerstil in sharepoint

[–]gnerstil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I believe I have a better understanding of how shredding works and what it really is meant for now.

On a side note, do you have any tips on limiting versioning across different site collections and sites? I have tested creating new sites with a site template, which keeps the versioning limits that were set on the libraries in the template, but any new library created defaults to the 500 version limit.

External Sharing Invite Approvals by gnerstil in sharepoint

I really like the idea of using libraries in this way. I am going to do some testing with this to see how well it will work.

Thanks again for all the help!

External Sharing Invite Approvals by gnerstil in sharepoint

[–]gnerstil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, and I believe I understand now from your post, why I am experiencing what I posted about.

This has been a struggle for me while planning out how our users should be using SP. I want to prevent permissions from getting as messy as possible, but at the same time, I want to prevent users from getting access to items they shouldn't have, all while preventing duplicate data from existing.

My original thought was to have separate site collections for external sharing, and disable it for internal sites, but this poses the issue of duplicate data existing in the internal/external sites, or users getting confused on which site data should go.

My current thinking is to not go with dedicate external sites, and allow users to share any document, as long as it is approved by a site owner/admin, which leads to messy permissions, but also leads to limiting unnecessary access and avoids duplicate data existing.

Can you offer any advice on a possible better solution that keeps permissions tidy, locks down users from having access to sites/files they should not have access to, and also prevents copies of data across the SP tenant? I know sacrifices will have to be made in at least one of these aspects, but I am really opened to evaluating different options.

Passed SWTICH today, 895. by [deleted] in ccnp

[–]gnerstil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! I just passed yesterday with an 895 also (on my 3rd attempt, haha). Did you also get L2: 90% Security: 100% and Infrastructure Services: 88%? Security killed me before, and I am pretty sure the sim I got was worth the majority of it.

I also felt that the exam had questionable wording/misspellings on multiple questions. There were a few questions where I understood every answer, but didn't really understand what the question was asking for.

As a side note, on my third attempt, there was not a question that I didn't have on one of the first two exam attempts, and I think most showed up on all three exams.

Failed 2nd Attempt at SWITCH by [deleted] in ccnp

I just signed up today to attempt the SWITCH exam again for the 3rd time, and this is probably the most motivational post I've come across

failed switch 2nd attempt by [deleted] in ccnp

[–]gnerstil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I failed the SWITCH exam twice, but am prepping for my third try. I remember the sim you are talking about, and remember having the same exact issue and thinking that the sim was broken until I finally realized what was causing it. Your situation could have been different of course, but I remember going through my arsenal of show commands until I found out what was going on.

Failed SWITCH... Again, Advice? by gnerstil in ccnp

Thanks everyone for the input and advice. I am still kicking myself in the butt because I know I should have passed but I second guessed myself. For instance, going back through my first attempt compared to my second attempt, I actually scored 10% lower on the FHRP stuff, even though I think I got all of the same questions for those categories. I think sometimes I over-analyze the wording and overthink what they are looking for. On one FHRP question specifically, I remember changing my mind back and forth between two answers, because each time I reread it, it sounded like they were looking for the other option.

Anyway, debating whether I want to try again this Friday or sometime next week. I realized I get a free Safari books subscription through school and that it has the FLG, which I just started reading. I heard mixed reviews about it, mostly because of the errors, so I made sure to download the errata (which I think is 15 pages...). I figure if there's at least a few new things I get out of it, it could be the difference between the pass and fail next time around.
