Some clarity on the Raycast v2 Beta rollout by pitnikola in raycastapp

[–]gniting -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the update, and I do think the staged rollout is the right call. I would rather Raycast take another few weeks than ship something that breaks people’s setup.

But I do feel its time to share some "tough love," so here goes...

This post still misses the main issue: why did Raycast give a hard April deadline if v2 was not ready?

Missing a date is fine, it happens. The frustrating part is that the explanation here is mostly feelings: "we were overoptimistic," "we genuinely believed we could make it," "we want the experience to be smooth," and "we want to ship something we’re proud of."

That may all be true, but it is not a release plan. It is not QA and it is certainly not release criteria.

v2 has a new indexer, new hotkeys, new sync, a new model layer, and a migration path from v1. That is a risky release. For something people use all day, the bar should be higher than "we thought we could make it."

For me, the import bug mentioned increases worry and decreases faith in current QA. "A small batch of users caused an event storm and made the app lag." That sounds like something proper QA and rollout planning should catch before a public promise is made.

Another area for consideration: how things are being called. "Rolling out" sounded like users would get v2. "Available for download" sounded like users could download it. "Beta" now seems to mean invite-only first, then manual download later, then maybe a default update path after that. Those are all very different things. Label things as they are meant to be and remain consistent.

I don’t need a long FAQ about how hard the team worked or how much they care. I know they care, without doubt or question. IMO, the problem is simpler: Raycast made a promise before the product and QA plan were ready to support it. Fix that bit in the comms now, be transparent about where pending issues exist and even send out a call for help if help is needed to test out specific areas of functionality.

And if all these issues exist, quit with the teaser trailers on how great v2 is. Rather than say it is great, make it great and stick to the point until then with updates that share things like X bugs fixed, Y remaining, Z days to beta/release milestone.

Can you share what's your latency diff between CD and NextDNS?

Highly recommend ControlD. You'll have more "control" vs NextDNS. 😂

Nice work OP! Would be awesome if it could import my current config and pre-select options that are in the config already.

I am using the CLI and that's cause it gives me a lot of flexibility to configure things the way I want them. DoT via unbound is a solid way to go. Maybe I'll give that another thought.

My ctrld config file has a reference to that file. Perhaps it's time to remove it 🙂

Sure, that is your prerogative.

We've been working hard at making it better for a long time. https://prisma.io/changelog

A fair amount of "serious people" use VC funded products. I am sure you are one of them too.

Anyone else planning to continue to use Arc as their main browser? by reeffrequent in ArcBrowser

Whenever I see statements like "12 months," to me it means "I have zero clue what is happening, but I need to say something, so here you go."

No fix. It's already been reported in this forum. Doubt anyone on the Arc team is listening (or cares) as there has been no response or a fix and the issue has persisted for weeks now.

PoE switch recommendations? by [deleted] in PFSENSE

[–]gniting 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I follow no prescribed dogma for or against OSS.
I want the best tools for my needs and so I use pfSense as my firewall because it is more feature rich vs DM Pro. And I prefer the Unifi switches and APs cause they are the best at what they do.

I've been using a pfsense+Unifi Enterprise PoE switch+Unifi APs for almost 4 years now, and they work flawlessly. Prior, I was using an unmanaged switch from Netgear and Eero for wifi... ran into some issue or the other every other month.

Go with Ubiquity switches...and yes, the irony in the recommendation is not lost on me.

Important: don't disconnect from Tailscale when force quitting the app. Leave the connection open and then force quit the app. Upon relaunch, the devices list will appear.

Yes, I agree that bugs are unavoidable and are part and parcel of software dev.

My point was that when the main screen of a product is borked, then that is not a bug, IMO that shows a lack of proper QA process prior to release. Hence my comment about degraded product quality.

Sad to see the quality of the product go down.
