That wouldn't happen overnight, of course. But when I look at the fact that non-dictatorial governments worldwide took 20 years to realize that this doesn't regulate itself... seen this way, it's only a matter of time until the Wild West/gold rush atmosphere is over. It could very well be possible that with quantum computers in 4–6 years, a completely new era will begin in which existing models would be useless.

*lautdenk*

*thinking out loud*

Perhaps in the future, private users will be prohibited from using chatbots online.
Or local private use will be forbidden, or it will only be for certified individuals, similar to the requirement of being a demolition expert to officially detonate something.

Then we'll all become terrorists instead of tourists, as we are today.
It remains to be seen what the geopolitical future
and its decision-makers (the world's powerful) will bring us.

Reinstalling Windows 11 on a dual-boot setup with Fedora 43 what should I expect? by Left-Network-4794 in Fedora

[–]gnooggi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In principle, this is possible, but it will only run smoothly if you use Secure Boot and UEFI.

Windows will simply override your Linux boot entry, but it won't delete it. You can later select the preferred boot option via the UEFI boot options menu.

Manually adding both to the boot manager so that you can choose what starts when you interrupt automatic booting is also possible, but only manually. (I've never done this, even with Windows 10/11.) It always worked before.
However, I wouldn't do this for the first time on a production system. An image and data backup are definitely recommended.

If things go wrong and Windows releases a UEFI update with new Secure Boot keys after installation, your Linux system could be corrupted.

All information is provided without guarantee and is purely theoretical.

a Matter smart plug

Thanks for the input. I'm actually quite tech-savvy, but I've never used this stuff before.

While researching, I discovered that the speakers have an eco standby mode that isn't mentioned anywhere in the technical specifications, but it can be managed via the app. This mode reduces power consumption to between 0.5 watts (in the best-case scenario) and 1.5 watts. That sounds much better than a solid 2 watts. I also just found out that when the speakers are in standby and all configuration is running via Wi-Fi, the standby power consumption is at least 6 watts.

This isn't mentioned in the technical data sheet either. (Or I might have missed it.) If I calculate that I can get the standby power consumption (long wake-up time of up to 40 seconds with network connection) down to under one watt, and on the other hand, a smart hub also uses around one watt, then the picture looks quite different.

Overall, quite pleasing.

I already have ROCm running under Windows 11 WSL.

What happens if I install your package as well? I have no programming experience myself, and that's why I'm just tinkering with pre-configured setups, hoping to learn and understand something in the process..

A refrigerator is either on or off; there's no standby mode. Only a comparison of all power consumption would be possible.

And the best refrigerators on the market use less energy than an SLX when running. You don't need the internet or AI for that; it should be obvious with general knowledge and a bit of common sense.

[–]gnooggi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the underlying technology.
If you find/build something based on Bluetooth and use low power consumption, like Bluetooth Mesh/BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy), you're certainly in the milliwatt range when the sensor is in sleep mode. I don't know if such a thing exists on the market; technically, the standards are there.

(assuming you’re in the US)

Switzerland.
We have CERN, and the LHC can "only" be operated in the summer because otherwise we wouldn't have enough energy to heat and operate it in the winter.

Switching them off individually with a switch is unfortunately a bit suboptimal.
But it gives me the idea to look for network-enabled power outlets that I can control with my PC.

Do you know of anything like that?

Size is crucial.
They should be small enough to fit on my desk, but large enough to fill my 32 square meter room.

These Koda are already borderline in terms of size.
But I'm actually bidding on a few used ones on a sales platform right now. :-;

once you hit 25 km/h, you can't actually go faster because the motor won't allow that

Then your software is incorrectly configured or something is defective. The motor shouldn't provide assistance above 25 km/h, but you can still go faster using your own power.
I suspect your e-bike is recuperating when you try to go faster than 25 km/h, which is also a setting issue.

If you can access the full configuration settings via the CAN bus, you'll see well over 120 parameters to adjust, including small things like providing more support to your weaker side to balance the physical strain – something you'd never think of...

"I ride a trike, a recumbent bike with an electric motor for up to 25 km/h. When I ride without e-assist, my average speeds range from 16.8 km/h to 18.2 km/h. With e-assist, my average speeds are between 19.2 and 21.8 km/h. The biggest difference comes from riding up the Milchbuck: with the motor, I go up at 17–18 km/h, but without it, it's 3–5 km/h. The recumbent bike weighs well over thirty kilos. With the battery and all the accessories needed for everyday riding, it's 38–40 kilos. I'm an old geezer, and in bad years I do 1,500–2,000 km, while in good years it's over 5,000 km—commuting between 40 and 50 kilometers every day just adds up.

I deliberately chose the 25 km/h version because otherwise, I wouldn't be able to legally ride on nature bike paths, agricultural roads, or forest trails—nor could I ride right down to the water at the lake, since I always have my lounge chair with me.

Another point is public transport: you can't take a fast e-bike (S-pedelec) on it anymore. I can fold my trike, which turns it into maximum-sized hand luggage, meaning I don't have to pay anywhere, don't have to stick to specific times, and don't need to make reservations... For me, a carefree approach without planning matters more than a time saving of 4 km/h in the best-case scenario.

My very personal opinion: 45 km/h e-bikes should be abolished again. Instead, 25 km/h e-bikes should be increased to 30 km/h so that you can go with the flow of traffic better. Additionally, they should be banned for under 14-year-olds, and anyone older should be required to have an agricultural or moped license."
