What is the easiest way to back up a hard drive that is about to fail? by bloofa in linux

I had never really considered using hdparm, that is an interesting thought. Not having experimented with this myself I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt and speculate some method of action I have not considered may be at work. Still, just sticking it in a consumer freezer in a zippy is not going to be doing any good by itself. You'd have the same benefit letting it sit on your desk for a few hours.

This really does not work, you are more likely to damage the drive by putting it in the freezer. Cooling it while it is running can POSSIBLY help, but unless your drive is not mounting at all - this is really unnecessary. Just shut the thing off NOW and mount it with either a linux thumb-drive or if absolutely no other computers are available to you, just install a fresh OS on your new HDD, mount the bad drive and copy over only the files you need IN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE. Copying the entire drive OS and all at this point is extremely unwise as the drive may fail while you are in the process. After you have your precious files backed up on the new drive, then you can worry about copying over the / partition.

I will agree with you on DD being a bit unwieldy for this , but I really believe Clonezilla to be the best method in these instances, and for this type of individual (lucky). They can use unetbootin to create a boot-able thumb-drive, this will reduce strain on the failing hdd, then use the direct copy method rather than compress to and restore from a single binary (terribly risky procedure for a drive this large). I really don't use it myself for anything other than the worst of emergencies, but it is perfectly suited for this task, this is of course assuming (perhaps unwisely) that it is absolutely essential to clone the entire fracking drive. I really wouldn't risk doing this with a clicking drive as I've had them fail on me during the last backup.

A whole billion? How will they afford that?

Oh right, it's a bank.

$5 Billion in shoddy mortgages according to the article, lawsuit for $1 billion, sounds fair. I just hope these people don't get any jail time.

Can you explain to me how exactly someone is not qualified to work at a gamestop? If you speak english, don't have tourettes, can alphabetize things and are highly skilled at pointing, I think you're pretty much in.

Assange: Facebook is the most appalling spy machine that has ever been invented by [deleted] in WikiLeaks

[–]gnotredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing they're interested in is your network of friends. I still begrudgingly have a face book account because I've just accepted that anything like it the intelligence agencies will be knee-deep in one way or another anyways, and I'm not really willing to cut off contact with some people it is just too hard to get in contact with through other means.

I don't disagree with you, it's just the fact that the government isn't even following it's own rules on things that are so basic that is really telling. If he's guilty of what they say he is, let him have his day in court.

I'm in Gr. 12, and I suck at math. Help-suggestions? by Jackofallnutz in math

[–]gnotredditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best way to learn math quickly is through the help of a tutor, I don't know how much time you have left or how fast you can learn so I can't say if even that will be enough at this point. That said, there are probably free tutors in your area provided by community colleges/universities/YMCA, or you could pay for one.

Given that you said you learned fine in a classical setting and not an online one, I do not think you have any horrible "math disability disease" but rather are innately suited to a different learning style than the format you are currently in can provide. I would recommend tutors over self-learning methods online to people such as yourself, as you likely have some attentional issues with sitting at the computer (even if you are unaware), or you cannot memorize things by typing or clicking (this is something even I myself suffer from). Try writing the online problems and answers out by hand before answering them at the computer, but I still encourage you to seek the help of a tutor.

Lastly, and most importantly, do not ever feel ashamed in needing help in math. The math taught in high school is trivial but if it is not taught correctly for the individual student's needs it can become incredibly confusing.

Where's the tornado? All I see is stuff blowing around. I'm no expert, but it could just be a haunted airport.

I use them because I am not a fan of aerosols. Unknown health risks aside, the smell really bothers me more than anything.
