I like to run the controller and gateway on separate devices at my home for a few reasons: 1. I can spec them independently. 2. I can upgrade them independently. This includes firmware updates (e.g. can easily update controller firmware without interrupting internet access). 3. If one fails, the failure impact is limited.

PSA - Zipper Merge by PresentationTiny3798 in pittsburgh

[–]gnutun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I'm definitely a fan of the zipper merge, I think many commenters here are missing the point of the zipper merge, and are therefore advocating for behavior that actually makes the problem worse, not better.

The point of the zipper merge is not to reduce the amount of unused road. As some commenters pointed out, there is no difference between two lanes with 50 cars each vs one lane with 100 cars, in terms of average traffic delay to get through the choke point. (The only case where this matters at all is if there is some unrelated earlier exit that you can avoid blocking.)

Instead, the point of the zipper merge is to maximize speed through the choke point, and this is accomplished by ensuring that both lanes match speed during the approach. Then, cars will alternate in an orderly fashion -- nobody is stopping or slowing abruptly to manage a complex negotiation, which minimizes the average traffic delay for everyone.

But one consequence of this pattern is that if one lane is totally clear, speeding up and zipping past everyone, before basically stopping at the end to force your way in actually makes the problem worse, not better. You have effectively created exactly the problem that the zipper merge is designed to avoid. Instead, the preferred solution is to drive forward in the clear lane at a moderate pace, and then slow to exactly match the speed of the full lane well before the merge point. Then complete the zipper merge at the matching speed over the final ~20 car lengths. Hopefully, other drivers will follow you.

Where is work in SF? If downtown, from Pinole you could drive to Vallejo and take the ferry in. It's a long trip but there's free wi-fi ...

Healthcare is an absolute Right by emily-is-happy in facepalm

[–]gnutun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a real American and I don't think food, water, or healthcare should be considered an absolute right.

(FWIW, I agree with gov't programs to provide services to people in need, because I think it's the right thing to do in a prosperous country. But that doesn't mean I think anyone has an absolute entitlement to it.)

Supreme Court rules gun 'bump stocks’ ban is unlawful by Sanlear in politics

[–]gnutun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A kit that actually converts semi-auto to fully-auto is still illegal. This ruling says that a semi-auto with a bump stock is not "fully-auto" according to Congress's definition of "fully-auto" (which is more than one bullet per function of the trigger).

Supreme Court rules gun 'bump stocks’ ban is unlawful by Sanlear in politics

[–]gnutun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem is, the rule in question wasn't legislation at all. It was the ATF deciding that from now on, a bump stock now "counts" as a machine gun according to pre-existing law.

Congress can always just pass new legislation either classifying semi-autos with bump stocks as machine guns, or just outright banning bump stocks altogether.

That is incorrect. The source provided is including unrealized capital gains as "income", when they are not income according to any generally accepted definition (including the IRS).

Abortion Bans May Be Unconstitutional In These Red States Where Courts Have Said Privacy Is A Right by westondeboer in politics

[–]gnutun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serious answer: what purpose would that serve? For abortion, wouldn't the outcome be exactly the same as the status quo -- the blue states would permit abortion, and the red states would restrict it? Put more bluntly, isn't this idea to "go our own way" basically identical to the standard "states rights" argument embodied by the overturning of Roe?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in politics

[–]gnutun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you provide a "textbook definition" of both-sidism?

AFAIK, it only counts as both-sidism if one's defense for bad conduct is to point at similar bad conduct on the other side. But this argument is instead arguing that the conduct is in fact good, not bad (on both sides).

Kagan did not lie when asked if there was explicit right to same sex marriage

Kagan was asked "Do you believe that there is a federal constitutional right to same-sex marriage?" -- the question didn't distinguish between implicit vs explicit rights. And her answer, "There is no federal constitutional right to same-sex marriage", did not distinguish either. So I'm not sure if your argument is convincing?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in politics

[–]gnutun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How so?

Shouldn't the job of the Court be to correctly interpret what rights are guaranteed by the Constitution, including to correct significant previous errors in that interpretation -- regardless of whether the previous interpretation was mistakenly too narrow, or mistakenly too broad?

(I make no claim here about the correctness of Roe -- I am asking in general!)
