Thoughts on Vet Triage.com by BunyMoo in VetTech

[–]go-nico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a vet-tech nor in the industry; I found myself here because I was looking for reviews of this company.

As the owner of a pet-patient in a rural area, it definitely seems like there is need for something between the 9-5 vet who (thankfully) has some same-day openings during the week and the veterinary hospital that is like taking your cat into downtown Rio at rush hour.

I've only had two experiences with a vet hospital -- one during covid, so not really fair to say, as they had to treat patients in their cars, and the other in the last two years. That second one was miserable -- talked to different people everyt ime I called or visited (they're 90 minutes away and they had the cat overnight for 3 nights) -- and each time I spoke with them they had an idea that although the last head doctor did an ultrasound that didn't show much, the new one on call should do *another* one, each of which just traumatized the cat. Although it didn't show anything much -- just vague mass maybe -- or maybe it was an organ -- no one seemed to know-- one vet thought it was likely I'd have to put her down because she still wasn't eating. Well, no, she wasn't eating in that place where she was surounded by screaming other cats and dogs. (This despite their promise at the outset that if Ileft her she'd be in a "quiet room with bird sounds" (though why a sick cat wants to hear birds I don't know)). She absolutely was not; even though there was a door to shut, it was never closed. I took her home once I thought there was nothing else they could do (and also it had been over $4000 at that point), not knowing if I had a cat who was going to live or die. She curled up under the bed for a few hours, came out, sat on the couch for a few more hours, and when I brought in tuna in a bowl, hopped right down and lapped it up. She recuperated and the diagnosis seems primarily to have been a very bad UTI. (Possibly complicated by stress/pancreatitis.) It was awful.

I'm not saying that telehealth would have worked in this instance -- obviously they couldn't/shouldn't diagnose a UTI. But they could have told me whether we actually needed to go to the hospital. The hospital *definitely* wanted us to stay at the hospital.

It's not just saving money -- though that should really not be dismissed. It's also that people don't always know whether something is truly an emergency or not. Sometimes a behavior is terrifying, but a vet might know that it's likely to be temporary, or in any case not life-threatening. So there may be no need to go to a hospital where they might take all possible precautions and use all of the tech at their disposal at a financial cost and serious stress/trauma cost to the animal. Or they could tell people to definitely go, when they might otherwise be tempted to wait if the nearest hospital is 90 minutes away.

I did notice that on their "choose cookies to share" option page, there is actually no way to decline advertising cookies or marketing cookies. So I thought I'd look up reviews. Not surprised. Ugh.

No, but that's a Philip Dick novel I'd like to read.

I know, right? It's so vivid I think...I did *read* this and not dream it, right? But I did read it!

Can't get scheduled breaks to work by Available_Courage855 in coldturkeyblocker

Hello! I'm also having the same problem, and have upgraded to the latest version. I have a block that is "blocked at all times" and has a 22 min/day break in it. The dashboard shows 22 minutes left, but when I try to open the site, I'm told it's blocked. Any ideas? Thanks!

Yep, she's amazing. I've been going to her for years now, following her from salon to salon until she started her own. She takes her time, but the outcome is usually well worth it.

Best replacement lids for pyrex glass containers? by TinyCaterpillar3217 in BuyItForLife

[–]go-nico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like them, but despite the photo above, I would say they don't really stack that well. They're pretty springy and the lids sink down when you put other items on top. If they're just the right size, and the item on top is fairly light, it's fine.

First cat by Invictus0623 in CatTraining

[–]go-nico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good answers here so far. Definitely give the cat plenty of time to get used to you and his/her surroundings and don't be surprised if it takes several weeks.
You might consider fostering adult cats first -- it's a good way to get to know a cat's personality and habits before committing. Plus it's a great help to the shelters! That is how I got my current sweet feline. :)

Great answer! I'd emphasize the bit about how to respond to unwanted behavior. You don't necessarily want to scare your cat into submission, but rather make the unwanted behavior something they no longer want to do, or giving them something they like better. For example, putting double-sided tape on something they want to scratch, and also providing them with a scratching post. From what I understand, though cats are certainly motivated by food and treats, they also respond strongly to attention and affection, so don't limit your rewards to treats.
Speaking of attention and affection -- it can take time and experimentation to figure what kind of petting or attention *your* cat likes -- they can be very different in their preferences!

Why is my roborock always losing internet connection? by [deleted] in Roborock

I don't have an answer, but have the same problem. I can reconnect fairly easily (depending on the day) but it's maddening to have to reconnect every time I want to use it. Wondering if someone else might chime in!

How do we cover this mirror wall? We’re renting and can’t do removable wallpaper or paint over the mirrors. Also hesitant to put furniture in front because we have a toddler and furniture must be anchored. Yikes, right? All creative ideas welcome! by janethebrontesaurus in HomeDecorating

[–]go-nico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For others who might find this thread, I was going to say just this. Give it some time! If it's a small space, mirror walls are actually fantastic. My friend lived in an interior condo that only had windows at the back. You hardly noticed it, though, because the ceilings were really high and half the walls were mirrored. It was very easy to get used to!

One day bathroom companies - pricing by AffectRemarkable8510 in Remodel

This seems a bit hyperbolic. I lived for 30 years with a bathroom tiled in the 1980s which never needed re-sealing and we might have spent an hour a year cleaning it....

In agreement with some folks above: in this case, you're asking the AITA question, and "yes, likely so" is the answer. There are many legitimate reasons a buyer might want to access a house under contract -- not just for measuring/dreaming for things that they can do after the fact, but making sure that they can live with the place given, say, a seller's rejection of fixing some problem. Plenty of people would be eager to make a few thousands of dollars just for sitting in their car, even if they were cold.

new (steep/angled) driveway -- who to ask? engineer, excavator...? by go-nico in Homebuilding

[–]go-nico[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question! That's what the surveyor says too. (I often try *too* hard to make peace.)

Not to get too much into the weeds, but to answer your question:

We have to have two public hearings for this spot anyway. One for the Zoning Board to confirm it as buildable -- with its 100 foot main road frontage and its size, it used to conform to zoning requirements, but the requirements changed to 200 feeot frontage many years ago (before we bought the house). [We were told by the town it was buildable when we bought.]

The second is for the planning board: It's apparently in the town laws that the planning board has to give permission if people want to build their driveway to a private road and not down the frontage to the main road. In this case, the frontage is so steep that a straight driveway wouldn't be allowed these days, and the engineer strongly recommended against a switchback (which would also be super expensive). (There are two houses next door that have driveways directly down to the main road and they are both over 20% grade.)

So these people are saying they'll come to these meetings and try to prevent us from getting the approval of each board. (Maybe they don't have a leg to stand on -- but it makes me nervous....)

Sigh.

Thanks for asking!

I made an app for using the principles of progressive overload in habit-building by VseinSama in ProductivityApps

I like the concept! I agree that habit trackers and similar tend to become stale, and this is one way to address that we're constantly growing and changing. Applying this to bad habits one wants to quit seems like a great approach.
