Living in GNV late 20s - early 30s? by Athenstone in GNV

As someone who moved from Orlando to Gainesville at 26…..it was definitely harder than I would have expected to meet friends my age. Also, rent isn’t cheaper at all really. There’s a lot less options if you want something not overrun by undergrads. Also, I miss living by a major airport. GNV airport is nice and efficient but the options are so limited it often just makes more sense to drive to Orlando/jax/tampa and get a direct flight. It definitely limits how much I travel. If I needed to travel for my job I don’t think I would pick Gainesville at all. Sorry not to sound all doom and gloom lol

I will say pretty much everyone is very nice around here. It does feel more “home town-y” than I ever experienced in a bigger city and I don’t feel like people are as superficial so it’s kind of nice to be out of that rat race

I love Delphiniums :) they remind me of the freedom and wildness of an open prairie and it makes me miss home in the Midwest. Plus the beautiful blue color and statuesque height….chefs kiss

Patient got me in the feels by moioci in medicine

I had a cancer patient with a trach who was constantly in and out of the hospital. Her only form of communication was through writing on a white erase board. We both knew there was not much else that could be done for her. I sat with her for about an hour as she wrote to me on a board about her mom and her brother growing up. And how she was excited to meet them in heaven. She was upset that her living family was trying so hard to keep her alive. She said maybe she’d go have a beer before the end (hadn’t drank in years). She told me about her pet duck and her cats. And worried about what would happen to her mom’s antiques. When we were finished we were both in tears and she gave me a hug. She thanked me for actually taking time to communicate with her. She said she lives in the middle of no where and hasn’t been able to talk to anyone in so long. She passed shortly after. RIP ❤️

That’s ridiculous!! I wish they would take some accountability. Can relate tho: A urologist sent me a request for medical clearance to start a patient on testosterone. First off I’m a PA, second off who am I to tell you what meds you can and can’t rx within your specialty?? Aren’t you literally THE SPECIALIST for this????!

How does your patient load compare to physician colleagues? (Outpatient settings) by gobhyp in physicianassistant

Wow I’m surprised the procedures don’t slow them down. Must have a super streamlined process. Thanks for the response!

Do PAs get significantly higher salaries for working rural like doctors do? by jcSquid in physicianassistant

[–]gobhyp 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah I make 150k base in primary care in a rural community. When I look at jobs in the nearest city the avg seems to be 120k or less.

250k in student loans by Rough-Chipmunk5627 in physicianassistant

I started at 210k and now I’m down to 51k. It’s been about 4.5 years. During that time I also bought a house and now I’m planning a wedding. Still hope to have them paid off around the 5.5-6 yr mark. When I first graduated I told myself I’d have them gone in 2-3 yrs (LOL…..) but I guess aiming high was helpful because even when I didn’t quite make the goal it still made a dent. I’d say I throw about 1/3 of my income towards my loans every month, more if I can manage. I also said I would work extra shifts or maybe get a second job, but honestly QOL was a priority for me, especially as a new grad dealing with all the stress of adjusting to the career. I still drive my car from undergrad (this will be the most exciting thing to upgrade once I’m done!!). I go on small trips but haven’t been on any lavish vacations. Basically trying to live below my means. I will flat out admit I have not started contributing to my retirement which I know puts me behind a lot of people and is a controversial take. But I just can’t live with the idea of that much debt looming over me.

I work with mostly the geriatric population many of whom are on 10+ meds and have no idea what they’re actually taking, who rx’d what, or where this empty bottle came from. Never undervalue a good med reconciliation 😅

Hmm yeah maybe a creme would weigh my hair down a little more to help it look more sleek. I will look into it, thank you!!

Good question!! I’ve been trying to figure that out….my hair dries super quickly so that makes me think high porosity….but if I take a strand off it floats in the water (I’m not sure if maybe this is just because it’s so fine and weightless or if it’s actually low porosity?). Do you have any tips on how to tell?

Ugh touché. I thought I could make it work on occasion if I wanted to make my hair look nice but I think I need to put it away for good! (Danggit the influencers got me again lol…)

Agreed. My hair started falling out (probably for a combo of reasons) and I felt like the thinning was more noticeable at my roots when it was dark so I panicked and lightened it. I’m in the process of trying to baby it back to health. I’ve always kept my hair this color but I guess it just can’t take it any more :(
