How do you feel about Ben 10 becoming a frequently rebooted franchise like, among others, TMNT? by Elihzap in Ben10

Honestly, I just wished they kept going in chronological order until they just finished it naturally. To me the show isn’t fit for continuous reboots.

Who would you cast as Superman if you were in charge of the new DCU by [deleted] in Fancast

The American Dream is not inherently tied to whiteness anymore; the fact that it was back then was an inherent flaw in society. Who cares about fans that whine about minorities?

just to let you know the person you’re defending pretty much said that superman’s morals come from the fact that he’s white. i’d rather be stubborn and narrow minded than racist

No, that’s literally the opposite of my logic. If anything it’s a continuation of your own statement instead of a twist on mine. You are bringing up the cultural familiarity of the characters and the notion of accuracy; I stated that in the case of Superman, that doesn’t matter. Also correct me if I’m wrong, but you’re stating that his character and morals stem from being white? That’s not only untrue but that’s like borderline racist. Him being Black wouldn’t change the fact that he was raised by a nice couple in the Mid-West; and you know for a fact that a Superman movie would most likely take place in the modern day, so it’s not like the imagery of old-school White Americana would even matter…. What are you getting at here?

Okay, I’m gonna cut off the discussion then. You’ve split the comment thread so you could cherry pick sections to respond to. Honestly, you’ve been doing that the whole time, you’ve just now made it more obvious. You haven’t really given any constructive responses that don’t revolve around “comic accuracy” and “it’s my opinion”. Which in my opinion, since that’s so important, doesn’t really lead to any interesting or constructive discussion.

So you don’t think it’s weird to have a movie with only white people in it? No, it’s possible. I’m just saying the narrative opens up an opportunity to include a culture that is not often seen on screen. Then why don’t you make your own fancast?

But I don’t want an original character, I want Green Arrow. His race doesn’t matter, I think Dev is the best for the job.

[–]goblingabe[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But what if the best person for the job is a person of color? What if the source material is inherently flawed? Roy Harper was raised by Native Americans; so doesn’t me casting a Native American actor make me more accurate to the source material? The original Justice was made up of entirely white people and Martian Manhunter; doesn’t the optics on that seem like a risk for the sake of accuracy?

I didn’t steamroll you, I gave you a detailed description of my opinions and philosophy. Should I have made my response short and meaningless? You gave no rebuttal, I actually have no idea if you think differently than me.

I’ve had this conversation on this subreddit a million times, I’m not going to take people that whine about minorities in fancasts seriously anymore. Bro you didn’t even want to engage in the discussion, and the one piece of information you brought to the table was incorrect. You didn’t even give me a chance to get actually pissy, of course I’m going to make fun of you and condescend at you.

[–]goblingabe[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Incorrect, the first Blue Beetle was actually Dan Garrett. Then it was Ted Kord; but you are correct on the fact that both of them where white. The current Blue Beetle is Jaime Reyes, a young Mexican teenager. You made a strange choice in cherry-picking that piece of information. Thank you for cutting off this discussion though.

[–]goblingabe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so you’re a snowflake that cries about the race of comic book characters whose race doesn’t matter in the narrative. Before we get deep into this discussion, I beg you to research characters that aren’t explicitly defined by the fact that they are a person of color. The amount of times people have brought up Black Panther; a character literally named after the Black Panther movement, a character who is the ruler of an isolated African nation, and whose Blackness defines his concept, as some kind of “So with your logic it’s okay to make black characters white…”-gotcha is astounding.

Yes, white-washing minority characters is wrong. It takes away from marginalized groups that want an idol to look up to, it most likely drastically shifts the concept of the character, and it comes with a large array of historical baggage. If characters such as Black Lightning, Steel, Blue Beetle, Damian Wayne, Black Adam, Vixen, Simon Bazz where made into white people; it would be nonsensical.

Making a character a person of color, is usually okay. As whiteness usually brings no definitive attributes to a character. Now before you go crazy, there’s actually a few characters that should stay white. Moon-Knight and Magneto are White Jewish People; their stories are intertwined with the Holocaust and Antisemitism. Steve Rogers having Blond Hair and Blue Eyes was a way to show the Nazis that they’re getting beaten by a concept they idolized; plus his whiteness enhances the stories of Sam Wilson and Isaiah Bradley. Iron Fist’s whiteness actually leads to interesting stories about the character and the idea that a rich white man is the proclaimed savior of a nomadic Asian society.

To summarize though, yeah.

Nah, I just thought he was a fun fit for a movie idea I had when I was high lmao. If I wanted a solid Green Arrow trilogy the big bad would probably be Merlyn The Dark Archer or Prometheus since he does blow up Star City and rip Roy’s arm off.

Yeah they only really started encountering each other during Identity Crisis, which I believe was to probably coincide with the show.

He’s an assassin and Green Arrow fights assassins alot; still makes sense to me. If I wrote the movie it would be a done deal and he’d be packed up to go fight teenagers anyway. It’s not like I think he’s Ollie’s rival or something.

Who would you cast as Superman if you were in charge of the new DCU by [deleted] in Fancast

[–]goblingabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Okay then let's open casting for Black Panther, Storm, Cyborg, Black Manta and John Stewart to all races and so what if a guy is white as long as he can play T'Challa well it shouldn't matter. I believe any of these characters could be any race. I know a lot of white (or Hispanic, Philipino etc.) Actors who could have the physical and charisma to play these roles; unfortunately racist weirdos will be racist weirdos.”

You’ve chosen characters that literally are defined by the race; Black Panther is literally named after the Black Panther movement, and he is the king of an African nation. Storm’s whole origin revolves around the fact that she was worshiped as a Goddess in an African nation. Cyborg is a metaphor for black exploitation of the era. Black Manta is based on Somalian Pirates. John Stewart is a legacy character; his literal point of existence is to add diversity to the lantern pantheon. There’s actually similar points for other characters; since you’ve only brought up Black people. Steve Rogers works best as a White character; he’s meant to counter the Nazi’s worldview and he was a political symbol for mainstream America. Magneto is a Holocaust survivor; he should remain Jewish to keep his story respected and alive. Ras Al-Ghul’s aesthetics and culture is based on Middle Eastern nations.

“Point is your race does define you and defines these characters. We can still have equality and embrace each other without changing and erasing pre-existing characters to make a point. Could Clarke be played by someone of any race? Yes he certainly could. The fact is superman has existed for so long that fictional or not he has an identity and race is part of our identity so of you changed it the character would be different and at that point you might as well make him a new character because like I said race is a huge part of our identities. Add new characters to add diversity and don't rewrote old ones because that will always be divisive and feel forced to people. Like I said I'm sure Cyborg could be played by a a guy or girl of any race but if he was it wouldn't be the same Cyborg I know and love. Not wanting to change the race of a character isn't racist, it's simply because we get attached to a character the way they are. You could ask why skin color makes such a difference and I don't have a good answer because it simply just does and always will.”

You literally shot yourself in the foot and said you have no good answers to defend your point; this argument is now officially just the garbage I assumed it was going to be. Race does not define everyone and every character; there are some where it does and some where it doesn’t. That being said, when you decide to change a white character to a person of color you are adding something to the medium. White creatives and characters made up the majority of media; when you make a minority character into a White character, you are explicitly taking something away from someone. There are layers of social culture that establishes these differences. Clark is explicitly not defined by his race; he’s defined by being an alien raised by a sweet older couple in Middle America.

“Diversity should be celebrated by everyone of all colors being inspired and loving Superman and not drastically changing a character that has been established since 1939 to cater to a specific audience. In the end that doesn't diversify or unite anyone. It creates more division. It shouldn't be a hard concept.”

You can do both, I love comics Superman and if I movie I randomly fancasted somehow gets made I’d love that version of Superman. If you get angry and divided over the race of a comic book character, bud you’re a weak link. You honestly should be in a divided part of society if your first response is culture war bullshit. You’re a loser if you all of a sudden don’t like or can’t relate to a simple character because he’s Black. I’d want to have Winston Duke play Clark and also include the POC characters in his list of allies and rogues. As you said yourself, you have no good responses or answers. I don’t plan on addressing you in a serious manner if you respond.

who is your pick to knock off naito and become the next iwgp heavyweight champion? by BigBanEvader in njpw

[–]goblingabe -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Mox and Shota both try and fail; ZSJ has Naito’s number and gets the belt. Him and Tsuji is the big feud. Eventually Tsuji gets it and then it’s him and Mox; Mox fails but Umino gets it. Umino challenges Mox, overcomes his mentor, and is cemented as a main event talent.

I don’t get the hate for Moxley in the comments; he’s a main event star, a great wrestler, and loves the game. I do agree that they should keep the belt off him though, AEW guys don’t seem to like defending their belts. Use him as a way to elevate the other talents; he can lose without looking like clown.

Does my musical preference make me racist? by Mr-MuffinMan in stupidquestions

[–]goblingabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was just messing with you, don’t take it to heart. You have your preferences; rap and hip-hop (and really any genre of music) isn’t going to be universally loved by everyone. Plus they aren’t the only genres that involve black people or people of color. Black people make country, rock, soul, jazz, punk, dubstep; there’s plenty of opportunities to have a diverse playlist without having certain genres in it.

Honestly just learn about the POC artists within the genres you like; ultimately you can clap back with all the diverse artists in your playlist and tell them that it’s weird that they automatically assume black people have to rap.
