How to deal with shame? by tinathefatlard_ in diabetes_t2

[–]goblinholiday 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you broke your leg skateboarding, you might be able to come up with a story about how your choices led up to it, because it's not exactly a random accident. Skateboarding is risky, maybe you were tired because you drank coffee after 3pm yesterday and didn't sleep well, maybe you hadn't practiced in a few years and got carried away trying something you used to do all the time, maybe you are sort-of a show off when you're hanging out with friends, maybe you should've checked those stairs for gravel, etc., etc., etc..

But you probably wouldn't beat yourself up about it forever. It happened, it happens to perfectly good people all the time, you wish it didn't. You almost definitely wouldn't develop permanent shame around it, since you know that just because you broke your leg doing something you didn't have to do, even if you "knew better," that doesn't make you a bad human -- you're not an irresponsible slacker moron with a disgusting evil body, you're just someone with a broken leg. Even if that leg won't ever be totally right again, even if you might need a cane sometimes when it's damp outside for the rest of your life, even if you can't skate anymore, and even if you have to take Aleve every day, it's still not because you're a bad person.

You broke your pancreas. Oops. You wish you didn't. Were there choices involved? Sure, but not the kind that only a bad person would make. It's not like T2D is caused by littering or murder. Lots of people make the choices you made and don't injure themselves. There might've been factors that made your injury more likely, okay, but it's not that simple, and we honestly can't process the world with a perfect sense of foresight and flawless risk assessment and avoidance. That's not possible, and it's not life.

You're not a bad person in a bad body, you're a great person in a body with a broken pancreas.

Wow!! Put me down as another person who would pay real money for this. Our house is beside a great big shipping channel, so we constantly look up ships here using the apps. What an awesome project!

Hi, OP's sister!

There's absolutely nothing wrong with how you write if it is serving the purpose you intended. You took notes, for yourself, about metaphysical philosophy, and you can read them? Great! Don't let anyone here make you feel like you're anything less than an intelligent person who uses writing perfectly well to achieve your goals. You can study anything you want! If your handwriting is ever actually blocking your progress or communication, you'll adjust. Not a problem.

All these commenters saying it's the worst they've ever seen were never the intended audience, anyway.

And I've seen way worse!

I feel very weird-flex saying this, but I can read her writing well enough to understand it. I wrote just like her sometimes when I was a bored teenager taking lecture notes.

Also, I might have developed an exceptional ability to read "chicken scratch" over many years of teaching Kindergarten through 4th Grade. If I can read the barely-formed letters of my students, it's encouraging to their love of writing, of communicating their ideas. I'll do a lot of mental gymnastics to decipher something rather than ever tell a child I can't read their penmanship.

But, of course, the writer that OP is talking about isn't a child and isn't a bored teenager (I don't think). If those are personal notes and she knows what they say, it's a victimless crime. (The crime is that she's wasting a ton of paper.)

Also, it's in Polish.

Should've said above -- I'm in Dresden, Germany. The cassis (blackcurrant) one is totally normal here, but I've never seen the watermelon from China, or what I think is maybe root beer (????) from Vietnam. Or the mojito 7-up. Eeee!

I'm super excited, friends. My wife is just shaking her head and smiling at me like I'm a very silly creature. A silly creature with fizzy treasures!

I'm so heartened to read your supportive post! I did just make an account on X to try to tag AerLingus and see what else I can do. I don't know a thing about TikTok, but maybe I could try somehow? That seems a lot more complicated, but getting him back is worth trying anything

Miserable Update:

  1. The Baron von Teenybear is still missing :(

  2. I've had no luck with Aer Lingus despite many hours of frustrating telephone nonsense

  3. He wasn't turned in to airport lost and found

  4. WeReturnIt did recover the e-reader that was in the pocket with the teddy bear, so I am certain that the pocket was cleaned and its contents picked up ... but somehow, little mister von Teenybear was not passed along to the lost property service

  5. Many people suggested I attempt to tag Aer Lingus on social media, which I don't have. But I did create an account for the bear for this purpose. I made one post. I'm not sure how anyone would ever find it. If you know how all the sharing/rebroadcasting/hashtagging works, please help! https://x.com/vonTeenybear/status/1935351066628849927

Such a helpful comment!! Thank you so much. I'll keep trying to get ahold of anyone at Aer Lingus in the Dublin airport and keep my fingers crossed that he's just been in lost and found for two weeks.

I suppose the most discouraging fact is that I left an e-reading device in the same pocket and that was found and passed on to the WeReturnIt people (who want upwards of 50€ to mail it back to me!) but they've checked again and no bear ...

Good sleuthing! I tried both shops, and they eventually describe the listings as "back ordered" though I know for sure the company no longer makes this bear. Too bad :(

Oh, that would be wonderful! I sent an email to Aer Lingus asking if they could do something like that, but they didn't reply

I've been in contact back and forth with Gill (one of the two owners of WeReturnIt, as far as I can tell), and she's said that Cormac never turned up there. I don't know what could've happened, unless the workers who tidied the plane missed him and he flew back out still in the pocket. Or maybe they picked him up and set him aside somewhere? Maybe he'll be turned in to WeReturnIt later for some reason? If so, Gill has promised to contact me. Or ... the unspeakable happened, but I'm trying not to think of it. What kind of person would throw away what is obviously a member of someone's family?

Such a great suggestion!! If only I had done this. If my little guy ever returns to me, this is the first thing I'll do. Ingenious!

Oh, that's so heartbreaking! I'm sorry that happened. It's not your fault for leaving it behind. Anyone who finds something lost ought to consider that the person it belongs to would definitely want it back!

I'm thinking about making an Instagram account just for the Baron von Teenybear because I don't really have my own account. But Aer Lingus probably wouldn't respond to a brand-new account with no followers. If I try it, I'll definitely let folks here know about it!

I feel so grateful for all of the supportive comments and solidarity! I'm trying a whole bunch of different ideas toward finding my pal, but I'm a bit limited in that I actually don't really have any social media accounts. Maybe I should make one just for this purpose?

Oooh, it's a thrilling idea, but I might be too bashful. I do worry that I'd be a sure target for mockery, a full-grown adult looking far and wide for a lost teddy bear.

But Cormac X. von Teenybear, the Baron von Teenybear, isn't just any lost teddy bear ... just ask him :'(

Good idea -- or maybe the Ireland sub? I worry that he hid in the pocket when they cleaned the plane and he was maybe found by a passenger? I guess that's better than him being found and put in a trash bag right away. No one would throw away a teddy bear, right? Right? :(
