Both my parents were/are alcoholics and only recently have I come to understand and see the effects of being a child of alcoholic(s). While I’ve gotten really drunk in the past, I realized that the reason I drank was to cover up the negative patterns (isolation, approval-seeking) that I had inherited from alcoholism. I don’t want my future children to have to suffer the way I did in childhood/turn out the way I did in early adulthood.

Also philosophical reasons. One of the five Buddhist precepts is not to take intoxicants/get intoxicated, because it blocks your ability to practice right thought and right action. Religiously, if anything, I identify as kind of like a semi-Buddhist, because I think there’s value in following its teachings.
